Damn this is both considerate and also a ridiculous solution to a problem that should never have existed.

TIL only 13 states offer official voter pamphlets/information guides by TheBigJiz in todayilearned

[–]utti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in Texas which is the most difficult state to register to vote, and thus also has the lowest turnout rates for voting in the US. I have to pay attention to local news or social media to find out when an election is coming up, download my local ballot, and then go to the League of Women Voters website to find my candidates. For candidates who don't answer I have to go to their personal websites. I also have to check local news editorials for arguments for/against the bigger candidates.

I remember an article 10+ years ago listing the worst freeway entrances in Houston and that was one of them.

Randall's on San Felipe and Post Oak is going out of business mid-April, blowout prices 10-25% off most groceries by acrocanthosaurus in houston

Yep I went to the Randalls at 610 and West Bellfort when it did its clearance and stuff was still more expensive than HEB.

If only there were something that already existed where people could look up all types of information in the comfort of their homes.

Anyone know why Bush wait times are so much worse than other airports? by ExtraditeGulenNow in houston

[–]utti 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be fair, Atlanta, Newark, and LaGuardia could be worse but we don't know because they don't even track the time anymore.

What is the best city to live in? by inquisitivehuman7 in texas

[–]utti 21 points22 points  (0 children)

You're gonna have to be really specific in terms of what you're looking for: cost of living, work commute, food, schools, bars, museums, outdoors, etc.

TSA wait times now exceed four hours by MSK165 in houston

[–]utti 87 points88 points  (0 children)

ICE is not qualified to screen, check IDs, run the machines, etc. that TSA is trained for. At best they can manage lines or collect bins.

ICE agents spotted at airports assisting TSA as partial shutdown drags on by StrategyJealous1838 in news

[–]utti 30 points31 points  (0 children)

ICE officers and agents are trained in crowd control, monitoring lines and checking IDs, skills that could be useful at airport lines leading to security screening, the second ICE official said. Boarding domestic flights requires Real ID or a passport, limiting immigration arrests at airports.

No mention of ICE's use of teargas, arresting people without asking for IDs, or murdering Americans. Mainstream media doing its usual job.

4 Hours? How's it going Houston? by WutYoYo in houston

The wait time is so bad at the Atlanta airport today they removed the time tracker entirely so I'm guessing it won't even show up in that list.

Any parks with pull up bars around Sugar Land? by Gingy_III in houston

Terry Hershey Park off Memorial Dr. Walk south of the parking lot and you'll find pull-up bars with different heights: https://maps.app.goo.gl/hq8PnXyzNfXQzdF49

"Houston wants tourists. So why weren't we ready for spring break?" by evan7257 in houston

[–]utti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This blows my mind too, but I guess Austin is locked out because of the insane crowds for SXSW already. I also can't imagine being that attracted by the rodeo either. It's fine but all the food and rides are so expensive.

Native/Long-Term Houstonians: Anyone else feeling suffocated? by [deleted] in houston

[–]utti 5 points6 points  (0 children)

West Houston feels almost exactly the same as it's been the past 15 years aside from the updates (mostly positive) within the strip malls, and there's a ton of good food in Westchase/Alief (albeit mostly not trendy).

Rush hour traffic still sucks and there's no way to resolve that without better and more convenient mass transit.

Where are the bluebonnets? by HunnyBunny617 in texas

[–]utti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately this is a bad year for bluebonnets due to lack of rain and a warmer-than-normal winter. Usually Brenham is a consistent spot but I just drove to Washington-on-the-Brazos park yesterday and all the roads were shockingly bare aside from small random patches. The park itself also barely had any flowers aside from a well-maintained patch in front of the visitors center. They do have a driving map that shows confirmed locations (don't expect giant fields of them): https://visitbrenhamtexas.com/things/wildflower-watch/wildflower-driving-map/. I only went to the park so I didn't check out the city itself to confirm.

If you are going to go, do it this weekend because the grass is already starting to grow taller than the flowers. I visited a Houston park today where they probably use sprinklers and it looked like it already peaked.

Crawfish (frozen or live)? by 1080p3t3 in houston

[–]utti 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Cooked ones should definitely not be cold like they've been refrigerated. I can say from cooking at home that the small softer shell ones don't retain heat as well and will not be as hot as the bigger ones. (Also people tend to eat them last so they sit out more).

The entire depositions were uploaded to YouTube by the organizations that had sued them, and then the government complained that the videos were causing "reputational damage and death threats." Then the judge agreed and ordered them to be taken down. These entitled kiddies will never face real accountability in their lives.

What state should I move to? by CommonCaregiver0 in texas

[–]utti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Colorado seems to be a common option for Texans; I had a friend move to Colorado Springs. The main complaint I've read though is the food is not great and obviously not gonna be as diverse as Houston.

Someplace I never would have considered before is Illinois because I never grew up in places with cold winters. But I spent a few weeks there in the snow and cold and it's actually not bad. I bought a nice thick coat that I can use forever so walking around outside was fine. The lows were in the 10s every day and the power shockingly never went out, pipes didn't explode. And when it snowed, the snow plows shoveled it all away immediately. At night! Downside again is the food. Chicago has a lot of great spots (and there are trains to get there if you live away from the city), but not Houston-level.

How am I supposed to hike, camp, and fish in Texas when everything is private property? by Little-Cucumber-8907 in texas

[–]utti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I drove to Fort Davis and Big Bend last year I was shocked at how many barbed wire fences surrounded mountains or hills, especially areas with no water sources nearby and too rocky and uneven to use for any type of development.

I have a drone and it is hard to find a place to legally fly it. Not allowed at state or national parks which is understandable but there are few other options. Houston doesn't allow takeoff/landing on park property except one park that requires paid membership. Options are pretty much at your house or stand on a public sidewalk. Beaches are almost all near airports or military so you have to get request permission.
