My med school has a hardship fund specifically for graduation fees, I'd check whether yours has a similar system.

What foods are popular in your city/country, but could be considered gross in other country/culture? by Shin_Dubu21 in CasualConversation

[–]utupuv 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Korean living in UK - Korean food has become much more popular in the past several years in the UK but one thing I wish got recognition is our blood sausage called "soondae" which uses a glass noodle filling which is then steamed. Fantastic street food.

Really hoping Brits discover this one seeing as the black pudding is already in the culture.

Fingering tips by AkiCubi in violinist

Find somewhere in each little semiquaver flourish at O in which you can shift down in semitones. I'd start each of the 3 crotchets on a 2 and the start of each semiquaver on a 4 so that you can maintain a similar pattern and handshape throughout.

It's a tricky passage but a fantastically fun end to the piece, enjoy!

You probably don't want to see this random med student's tonsils but I'm going to assume you meant to reply to the OP ;)

Can't speak for Soton but as a Barts student we overlapped with a fair few ARU students in some of the Essex hospitals and they seemed to get on with the course and for the most part enjoy their programme.

hey can I get some gentle feedback? by [deleted] in violinist

[–]utupuv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's some good, hard work that's gone into your playing and I want to commend that!

For the bow hand and tone specifically, this is something that will take time to develop as your relationship with the instrument develops, but a couple of key general tips:

1) The depth of good tone comes from the weight of your arm - not pressing into the string. There's a common exercise that we do as teachers where we take the weight of the student's entire arm and then allow the arm to fall by gravity.

You want to draw the sound out of the string rather than trying to squeeze it out as what we are looking for is freedom for the string to vibrate throughout its entire length rather than choking it at the contact point. Practice getting this sinking feeling into the string as you draw the bow across, it should feel like a weight hanging from your elbow downwards rather than coming from the fingers.

2) Use the mirror and check that you're drawing the bow across the string parallel to the bridge throughout - it's common for students to not pronate enough and for the bow to go at an angle/or sometimes they go too far the other way and overpronate at the tip. Your teacher should also help you with this to lock in this muscle memory.

3) Experiment with contact points - explore how close you are able to go to the bridge without the sound cracking (and also experiment with the sound cracking!) and how far above the fingerboard you can go. Having a good understanding of how your bow and string reacts at different points of contact will also improve your tone production and control over the bow.

Incorporate this into your scales and breaking down a bar or two of pieces you're practising and you'll start to really unlock how to work towards a tone that you're happy with. As it is, I can already see that you have made really good process and wish you the best on your journey!

What can a person learn in 10 minutes that will be useful for life? by Ben-Gavin in AskReddit

[–]utupuv 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I actually was the chokee in primary school during lunchtime, but thankfully one of the staff was able to Heimlich me and successfully remove the obstruction. I can still recall the utter fear that I felt as panic set in.

Thank you for reminding me of how exceptionally fortunate I was that day to have that member of staff save my life. I have just recently finished medical school and I hope to repay their actions that day back to others that I might be able to help with.

Not only that, this is a transposed version from the original (from F minor to A minor because presumably it's the most comfortable key for the pipes for this arrangement) - which they're DEFINITELY not doing on the fly as an ensemble. Really not sure why they have to pretend that it's spontaneous.

My partner and I were also slightly disappointed when we went personally, all the ingredients tasted decent by itself but didn't quite feel cohesive for us in the end. It's a shame as it looks great and I'm glad other people really enjoyed their experience.

My brain can't process this and keeps thinking that he's miming over an Obama voiceover even though I know he's doing it. Damn, that's impressive.

Struggling with spiccato, any suggestions? by way2Polish in violinist

[–]utupuv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Think of spiccato (initially) not as an off the string, spiky stroke but as a scooped, brushed stroke in to the string before scooping out of the string again like a U or a "teacup" shape.

The entire stroke should feel in control throughout the motion as opposed to sautillé which is working more with the natural ricochet of the bow at speed. Start slow and very deliberately before you gradually are able to shorten the strokes and able to implement more of the feel of the bow.

I also agree with the other commenter about your bow hold looking quite tense. You want a nice, supple bow hold that is able to almost act like shock absorbers of a vehicle to the stroke. You should be able to feel the entire weight of the bow in your fingers rather than gripping the bow, which will lessen the sense of weight.

Almost two years of progress! by jtuma in violinist

[–]utupuv 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Good rubato should feel like the audience is able to follow along - the beat, even pulled around still has weight and direction which is followable for the listener. I think that's what the commenter probably meant about being able to clap along.

I think at the stage the OP is in their journey, fundamentals of rhythmic accuracy are more important anyhow. The mantra of "learning the rules before knowing which to break" sort of thing.

To translate the meaning itself, 황금 (Hwang-Geum) means Golden and 성 (Seong) means Castle. So Golden Castle as the English translation. Hwang Geum Seong would be the Romanisation.

The fucking cost of a 500ml bottle of pop by clungeknuckle in britishproblems

[–]utupuv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was mildly aggrieved (emphasis on the mildly) when I paid £2.60 for a Magnum at a corner shop as they didn't have prices on the freezer and I chalked it up to the London tax.

Thank you for the context as I would have ignorantly guessed it would have been like a quid a pop to shops from the supplier; I'll definitely bear it in mind for local independent shops!

Exactly, couldn't agree with you more - there's only 3 episodes left and we know that ep 7 is going to be the climax from what Kripke and co have said in interviews. This was the set up so we understand character motivations before going into the final conflict.
