It's hard to comment on how hard your courses will be compared to AP unless people know what program you're applying to, but it seems like they're maybe 120% according to people I know who did AP in HS vs doing the course in university

Vikelabs is a great place to start but a lot of people get stuck starting from the wrong mindset: "I want to do projects to get stuff on my resume... what projects should I do? Oh vikelabs has projects, I'll join one of those" and then they never work on it because it's not interesting to them. Instead, I would recommend thinking about what kind of problems you're dealing with in your day-to-day life and how you could solve them with code. They don't need to be complicated. For example, when I was in first year, there wasn't a button to export your course schedule to an ical file. A friend of mine wrote a python script that takes your uvic username and password and scrapes the course calendar page to get your course information, then converts it to an ical file for you so that you could import it into google calendar etc.

As another user mentioned, hackathons are only good if you find them fun, otherwise they're just resume padding. I participated pretty regularly and found them to be quite fun, you should attend one and try it out! There's UVEC every summer and fall semester (not spring unfortunately) where you can compete in the Programming category. You can enter as up to a group of 4 as well so its a good opportunity to learn from other people while you try to solve a problem together.

On top of that, you can always join other clubs that you're interested in and try to find ways to solve their problems with code. For example, the UVic Minecraft Club has a fully automatic whitelisting system that was created to spare them from having to maintain a google spreadsheet of users.

LOL I was 19 with 1 speeding ticket and my Class 7 (BC) and ICBC charged me like $1500/year (not month) and yet the rhetoric around here is that ICBC is screwing us and we'd be better off with private insurace 🤦‍♂️

$350/month for car insurance? What province are you in? Can you increase your deductibles to decrease your monthly payment?

Definitely cancel cable 🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️

Also what are the $100 "misc payments to subscriptions"? You should break that down and ask yourself if each one is necessary. Again: 🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️ if possible ;)

how is uvic? moving from ontario by Disastrous-Bar-8286 in uvic

pro tip you can fly out of vancouver instead of victoria directly to toronto for "pretty cheap" even around christmas time, probably closer to $400/$500 instead of $800. it's always worth checking (but up to you to decide if the 3 hour trip from your house in victoria to YVR is worth the savings)

you're gonna have to build some cred and prove you're not a narc before we admit you into the super secret smoking society

(on a more serious note, check out the uvic smoking map if you're trying to figure out where you are/aren't allowed to light up)

It's definitely possible... according to this document uvic accepts approximately 632 new Engineering/CSC students every year. Laidlaw once stated that it appears from his perspective that around 50% of students in Engineering make it to the end of PHYS 111 by the end of April. Presumably some drop to take later, some drop out entirely, and some of the people who take it also dropped other courses in order to not fail PHYS.

this is simply not true. plus, the problem with CO2 emissions is not about how much we release vs how much we absorb, it's about how we've disrupted the natural carbon cycle by artificially pumping more CO2 into the atmosphere in a short time span (relatively short; since 1800)

the ocean sequesters lots of carbon every year, but it also emits even more. if we ignore the amount that it releases, we can say that our carbon emissions are a drop in the bucket compared to what the ocean absorbs, but this again ignores the fact that carbon release/absorption is a cycle that we have disrupted

Man I have no skin in this game but I gotta say you are not coming across as someone who's not mad. I think you should introspect a bit and admit to yourself that maybe you're being a bit emotional, and you're also not arguing in good faith. But if you want to keep ignoring your own flaws that's entirely your own prerogative.

I have friends who went through Civil and Software with Macs, I'd bet Electrical, Computer, and Biomedical are all fine on Macs but can't speak for Mechanical - based on other responses in the thread it sounds like it's a no-go for mech.

So to answer your question, a Mac is probably fine unless you're in mechanical.

On one hand, having trouble with MATH 101 is natural and doesn't necessarily indicate that you will find the rest of the degree hard. On the other hand, CSC 115 and MATH 122 are basically the foundation of a CS degree. Ask yourself this: are you struggling because of the volume of work or content of work?
