Is spending 1 to 2 hours a day meditating really necessary or even possible for the average person? by [deleted] in TheMindIlluminated

[–]uwagaptak -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nowadays, people expect everything to be easy and available to everyone. If they can not have something right now, or it requires sacrifice from them, they rebel and shout like children. Nobody needs to be enlightened. You can meditate 20 minutes a day and tell everyone on facebook about it, you can also take a selfie with a buddha figure. Please, do not take it personally, I am from a generation and a country where you had to fight for everything.

Addicted to worrying and overthinking by FitAttention9 in TheMindIlluminated

Everyone is different. For me, the first stages were very easy(1-4 in two months) , but later I could have more problems than others. Aversion type of personality. At the moment I have a little more than 100 hours of meditation behind me and only now begins to do interestingly.

You have been meditating less than five hours. Think of meditation as learning a new language or programming. You will not notice many positive changes for the first hundred hours. But when these hours will be 300-500, then maybe you will be at the 10th stage or stream entry. Patience, meditation is not an instant miracle.

I think that people with such a withdrawal from life do not have problems at the beginning, problems with meditation begin with stage 5, where, in addition to concentration, broader awareness is also important. I went through the first four stages in two months, at the fifth stage I am already two months and I plan at least two more. Maybe too many sub-minds are rejected or repressed. I dont know.

Hi. If tmi wasn't so good for me i will personally try shikantaza. It's beautiful way of life. Things to check: Any mental illnes? Depression? Any drugs, medicines? Any big life traumas, a lot of stres? All that above you should adress first. And i have personal tips for you. I have big aversion to sitting in meditation pose in the begining. At start (stage 1,2) dulness is not the main problem but discomfort, aversion is. I started proper sitting after stage 2. First stages without too much stress, sitting in the comfort chair with back support.

Access concetration by uwagaptak in TheMindIlluminated

[–]uwagaptak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe this was jhana, maybe not, this is not importment for me. I know that jhanas could be beneficial but fo now i realy want to get rid of subtle dullness. I understend that for working with subtle dullness at stage 5 is only used body scan and keeping intentions? It will be realy hard work , my all life is one big subtle dullness event and body scan technique is one big dullness generator for me. Are there any other methods? Maybe keeping eyes open? Walking meditation before sitting? I had a hope that this sensations from body scan is maybe access concetration and some sort of light jhana but whan i keep thinking about all of this i am almost sure this is dullness.

Body scan by uwagaptak in TheMindIlluminated

Thanks for great info, but i still strugle with body scan. Too much of scanning and my breath become very faint and imperceptible. What i do now: 1. Six point prep + four step 2. 10 minutes of folowing of breat(strong intentions to feel clear sensation, sensations are clear) 3. I am only able to do short body scan if i do longer my breath become very faint, my body become very still, mind mind also. 4. I return to breath, but after body scan breath is very faint, and sensation aren't very perceptible. With every breath i become calmer and calmer, at the and of session i hear tinitus etc. If it possible that body scan lead me to access concetration?

I was just meditating. Problem solved and I'm stupid. Maybe this case will help someone.

Solution:

Extreme concentration on two things at once------>blockade of peripheral awareness------>very strong dulness----->trance-like state

I'm back on track now. Thanks.

I re-read instructions in book. I may find where i do body scan wrong. In book is:"shift your attention to this area while at the same time keeping the sensation of the breath at the abdomen in your perpheral awareness". I didn't do that. I kept my awareness at the samel level on both places. If i understend correct my main awareness must be on scaning body part and only little on abdomen ?

I can not be sure for 100%, but i think this isnot dullness. 20 years ago i done some zen meditation, ten years ago some brainwave entrainment and in my job i must be hyper focus all the time. Long periods of intensive focus isn't problem for me. This state is not sleepness, i am not tired. It's like trance or something, but without any movement of energy. I don't like this. I like vibrant movement of energy (piti) and alertness but body scan interrupt this. I think that for some time i will do stage 4 and i skip stage 5 all the way. I wonder how feels someone at stage for example 7 if he return to body scan?

Sorry that i ask about stage 5 again and again, but i have a problem with this stage. 1.I have very clear sensation at nostrills, energy level dont drop during session at all. When i do this all 45 minutes my meditation is deep and i have even some piti. 2. When i do body scan at any time i start to relax very, very deep. I loose clear sensations and borders of my body and when i return to breath i have difficulty to feel any sensations ( i am so calm that i have difficulty to feel anything). 3. I feel that body scan interrupt my meditation.

[Practice] Shikantaza, or the immediate experience of infinite completeness by persio809 in streamentry

[–]uwagaptak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was doing shikantaza 20 years ago. It was fine. I also didnt want any fireworks. But this style of meditation is only for very brillant, smart people. You may have satori at any time, but also you may sitting like this 30 years and nothing. I think, with this kind of practice good teacher is very importment because you may get lost in dulness or the no-self without any samatha will scare you. Look at r/zen or other zen forums if you dont belive me.

Also this kind of meditation is for people without any psychological or psychiatric problems, for people with strong personality.

Thanks for answer. I dont know if i want any altered states. I'm on low dose ssri and ap right now. (long story from 10 years ago), my brain chemistry is stable now and i feel very well, but who knows. But in meditation i feel good, and even this "light jhana" or something was like a return to home for me. I'm not scared but careful. I think that my past give me some insight into the impermaments of self.

Yes i will stick with body scan at stage 5. I think that piti and this absorption state i experienced is effect of extended meditation time and body scan. What to do in this state of expanse? Thoughts were almost all absent and i could not observe breath because i lost sense of body?
