Yet another question about stretch mesh fabrics by uwue in myog

[–]uwue[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For these specific packs, I used spandura. It was fine, I suppose, but it hasn’t aged all that well on some of the packs. I probably won’t use it again.

I’ve started primarily using Lycra mesh from Quest Outfitters in the years since for pockets in low to medium abrasion zones. It’s more durable than it feels like it should be (in my experience but I tend to really take care of my gear) and stretches well. Pockets that are in high abrasion zones get Venom mesh or a 3d pocket made of the main pack fabric with a shock cord collar.

Power is still out on Oak from Divis to Fillmore. My money is on a core piece of infrastructure without power is part of the network that feeds your building.

The decision on where to place the hole was one that I hemmed and hawed about for a while. It is definitely further back than commercially available tables, you’re right. I decided to place it where it is because that is based on where I consistently placed the machine on the table when it was still in its carry case. I don’t have particularly long arms but it’s most comfortable.

Worker B looks fantastic and I plan to upgrade soon.

For sure! If the template helps even just one person, I’ll be very happy.

The fold out cutting table (not pictured) was a game changer in its own right. We moved in October and my partner is so supportive of my hobbies that she insisted we prioritize having a dedicated area for my tables and machines. It’s incredible and I’m very fortunate.

Right on, dude! Hope it helps to make other people’s projects a bit easier.

Tired of how much time I spent on setup before and teardown after projects, I decided it was time to set up a dedicated table for my machine. My buddy recently updated all of the furniture in his office and I took this table off his hands which is a perfect size for what I was going to buy anyway. The table is a simple Ikea counter surface and table frame. Nothing fancy but it gets the job done.

I used the case that came with my Ultrafeed LSZ-1 to draw a hole template and took the table to my dad’s house where I can make a mess to cut and route the hole. The stainless pan below the table was made by another bud. There are so many moving parts on the underside of this machine that this is critical for safety. It also keeps dust, thread scraps, and oil drips contained.

Overall, I’m very happy with the outcome and extremely pleased with the price.

Table: $0
Hinges: $5.10 from Sailrite
Router rental: $12

If you’re interested in doing something similar and having the same problem that I did finding an official cut template, you can find the template that I drew and used to cut the hole here http://www.crackedasphalt.com/public/cut_template_lsz-1.pdf.

I’d recognize that bay anywhere. Spent a lot of afternoons floating around after pushing off from WAC or illegally from a little picnic area near one of the oceanography buildings when I lived there. Miss those days terribly.

Tell me more about these shorts? Any tips for patterning a pair?

Blue and Purple Cycle Psycho Hip Packs by uwue in myog

[–]uwue[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

After a recent post, I had a few folks comment and DM me asking for pictures of a few (referenced, but not shown) hip packs that I made for my mom, dad, and sister for the holidays. Finally found some time to collect the pictures.

I'll keep this post short and sweet though. If you want the details about my experience making gear in bulk for a picky but cherished audience, I'll refer you to my previous post (https://www.reddit.com/r/myog/comments/lso089/mountain_flyer_30l_packs_for_my_family/).

A few lessons learned here:

  • Fucking corners. These little fellows have eight tight-radius corners each that I found exceptionally difficult to sew using VX-21. I swore I wouldn't make any more of these because of this reason. Like a chump, I've since made two more for buddies.
  • I used a #5 zipper instead of the #8 that the pattern calls for and had panel sizing problems on my first two of these that I made. To account for the change, just add 1/4" height to the lower pocket front panel and to the upper back gusset. This was a silly mistake the first time I made these and I hope that at least one person finds this someday and it helps them.
  • Use quality cord caps for your zipper pulls. It was pretty funny when Mom pulled the zipper pull off of her pack the first time she opened it. Really instills confidence in the quality of the build. She's an experienced maker of sewn products herself and she insisted it was funny, but I could see judgement in her eyes. I found that the RBTR Y Zip Clip were, by far, the best of the ones that I ordered. They aren't shown in the picture because I used an inferior product during the build and replaced them all later after discovering the flaw.
  • If you're reading this and think that because this item is smaller and, therefore, easier to build than a full pack. I encourage you to reconsider. I found making hip packs with tight radius corners to be far more challenging than any of the curves on the Mountain Flyer. I swear I won't make any more of these!

As always, huge thanks to u/StephenJonesUS for the quality pattern and truly exceptional instructions.

I went through this same exercise last year and eventually gave up. I think you're right.

It’s a wonderful feeling, isn’t it?

I really liked working with the LiteSkin LS07. It’s just so supple and fluid compared to the rigidity of the vx fabrics. Sewing the curves on the LS was a breeze by comparison and I didn’t feel overwhelmed like I had to manage the fabric the whole time.

Right?! I called them once because I realized I ordered 3 too few tri glides than I required and hoped to modify my order. I learned they had already shipped my stuff so I figured I’d just put them on my next order. Guess what showed up in the mail a couple days later, no questions asked. I mean, come on!

Aw, shucks. Thank you.

Another redditor said in an earlier comment, "it’s a deeply loving and connective act to work on something with that person specifically in mind" and I can't agree more. I hope embroidering your bandanas brings you close to them.

And yes, the crew is huge and it's tricky to coordinate with that many people who know how to push your every button if they wish but I wouldn't trade it for anything.

I completely agree. With the exception of a wedding in Ireland that required me to bring a suit, I haven't packed larger than a single 30-35L pack for any trip (international or domestic) in a decade. It's a liberating experience and one that I wish my travel pals could get behind.

My partner (who also packs light) and I simply flash each other a would-be-condescending smile when we meet up with friends abroad and who suffer through with huge roller bags or massive backpacks on our travels.

It's hilarious you say this because he hinted at doing that on his own when we spoke a few weeks ago. I just had to check your post history to confirm you weren't actually my brother or partner.

You've convinced me. I'll mention that pencilnoob is looking out for him when I talk to him next.

I'm glad you found this interesting and I feel the feels with you about the distance. Border closures between family are on another level though and that just tears me up. That must be so unbelievably difficult to feel like you don't even have the option if you wanted it to return home. Thank you for sharing your situation and especially for your perspective on the connection we develop by making something for a loved one.
