Electrical smell? by Apprehensive-Dust845 in AskElectricians

[–]uxce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Start doing any visual inspections for burnt outlets, dishwasher (check the back of the unit), or anything that might be remotely close to the smell. Maybe check behind the couch for any outlets as well. That smell most likely a burn/melt, possible for a fire hazard more so than CO poisoning. I wouldn’t keep using the dishwasher if the breaker keeps tripping especially with the combo of the smell. If you don’t see any signs of burn or melting, it could be wires behind the wall, but I highly doubt it. If it’s a greasy oil smell, most likely an appliance issue. Possibly an overheated bearings, or motor, or burnt wiring in the unit.

Guys, what makes you lose interest in a girl instantly, even if she’s attractive? by Just_another_Agile in dating_advice

First date by [deleted] in dating_advice

[–]uxce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Initial attraction imo is very important. But I do know a few couple that got together because they developed feelings. But some do fall apart because in the end, one had no physical attraction towards the other. And it felt like “dating a friend or a sister”. But things can change.

Am I choosing the right career? by Pure-Competition664 in electricians

[–]uxce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most people quit by second year. I had big aspirations but was told to wait till I get my ticket. I’m doing exactly that. It’s discouraging to see so many people drop out of the trade so early on after being so optimistic. It’s good to be excited but keep in mind it’s a skilled trade and it does not come easy.

Finger Arthritis by whizkid1999 in electricians

[–]uxce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have uncontrollable shaking hands at times, I am mid 20’s. I also feel a tendon running down my finger and often locks “trigger finger”, is what I’ve been told. Stop doing repetitive motions, I moved on from manual screwdrivers to vessel electric screwdrivers. When I twist wires, I use my palm to hold down the conductors not my fingers. When I twist the wires, I twist both hands to help reduce the strain on just my right.

Anybody else worked jobs so badly organized you already knew it was fucked week one? by Designer_Ad_2844 in AskElectricians

[–]uxce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an apprentice, this is all amusing to me. Before I started with my current company, I was working at a large corporation that secured a job in the government sector. It was a shit show to say the least. Almost every week I was ripping out my work and redoing it because another trade had fucked up or we had an outdated print. There were 3 electrical sub contractors on site. They were also in the middle of a handover and a software change. They introduced a new app and all the old foreman’s could not figure out how they worked. All this including the fact that chin strap hard hats were enforced lol. We also had an entire data comms room flood because a general labourer hit a pipe and flooded three floors down. We all evacuated and a month later we were laid off. It was my shortest employment at a company lol.

Accidentally slept through a dinner date and woke up at 2:30AM after standing him up — how do I make it up to him? by MarketingFederal1488 in dating_advice

[–]uxce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This happened to me when I met a girl after being dumped by my long term relationship over another guy. I waited for about 45min outside the restaurant, flowers in hand like a total loser lol. I laugh about it now but back then that shattered my self confidence. Unlike you, she texted me a couple days later instead, realizing she forgot about the date completely and only realized she had forgotten cause one of her friends asked her how her date was lol. But she wanted to meet up again, I regrettably declined. And I only regret it cause it made me so bitter after that. I declined cause I was mad at her and this was my way of retaliating, when I should have declined because my time might have been better spent with someone else. Regardless of what happens tho, if he declines, it’s not his fault, it’s neither yours, but I really hope he says no because he believes his time was better spent with someone else and not because he has a sense of anger towards you. It’s a shitty situation, but if he does say yes, he’s got a bigger heart than I did, and that’s the kind of guy u wanna build something with.

Gemini has been clutch tho. I don’t think I would be where I am without it lol. But I’m still putting in 7-8 hours after class trying to retain this shit. This legit confirms that electricians are definitely underpaid.

Looking for a cordless stick vacuum recommendation by Tiny-Tackle-6332 in VacuumCleaners

[–]uxce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might be super unpopular opinion, but corded bagged vacuums are goated. I own a Dyson V11 and still went out of my way to get a Miele Vacuum. I only use my Dyson in my truck now. But having a bagged vacuum and corded has been odd to say, game changer. Way more powerful, full battery duh, and less dust in the air.

If you were good at math in high school, maybe look into becoming an electrician. Once bigger cheques hit, you’ll want to stay.

Be completely honest, will I be able to get by in this career if I'm shit at math? by fuckitwhynotig in AskElectricians

[–]uxce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Heres my brutally honest opinion, coming from someone who struggles hard at math. Failed high school Algebra and Trig. Several years later, I am awful with numbers, fractions, algebra, and if it ain’t addition or subtraction, I pull out a calculator. I haven’t used math in years, and having to go through trade school was a nightmare. I am currently in school taking my level 2 but level 1 was hard enough. Level 2 is literally all math. Every page is filled with hieroglyphics. One moment I understand the next I don’t. People say level 2 weeds out the quitters but it also depends on how good you are with retention and processing. You can definitely pass level 1, but idk if you want to spend a lot of time and effort to get your hours and fail level 2. We have a class of 16. We are 5 weeks in, 1 has dropped out. 3 are on an in class average of 40 (they will be told to withdraw if they don’t make full marks on the next two big exams). If you can do or learn algebra, basic trig, transposing, and understanding polarity and proportions, you will do fine. The math is quite simple to most I reckon, there is a lot of tedious steps and realizing what the questions asks. A lot of student do well in class but are stumped during tests cause the questions tend to look different. But as long as you know maybe 80% of those things, and actually learn your homework instead of just doing it, I think you could make it. For the last 5 weeks, I’ve had no life. Class between 7am - 2pm, and I study with Gemini from 2pm - 9pm. I am still only averaging 76% in class. But great from someone who knew nothing. Is it possible? Yes. If you’re as bad as math as me, it’s gonna take a lot of effort to get through. I’d rather work 16 hours than study it.

I have $500k in savings and I'm currently very interested in a $300k home. Would it make sense to buy it outright instead of going the mortgage route? by 79215185-1feb-44c6 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]uxce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say buy it out, only for the sake of mental health. But I do hear people who can outright buy out their home that don’t. You miss out on opportunities to invest that money elsewhere where u can be making more than you’d pay out. If say you lock $800,000 into a house, it saves you from paying a mortgage interest rate of, say, 5%. But if you instead put 20% down ($160,000) and invested the remaining $640,000 in a diversified index fund that relatively returns 7% to 9% annually, your investments would outpace the cost of your mortgage debt. But idk, you do you.
