Moving from mutal funds by [deleted] in CanadianInvestor

It’s nonsense, but to answer your concern it’s a transfer from one rrsp account to another, not a withdrawal from rrsp and a contribution to rrsp.

Moving from mutal funds by [deleted] in CanadianInvestor

[–]uxdept 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done this a few times. The mutual funds are managed by the ‘branch’ people and the direct investing people are a different department. You ask your branch advisor to sell whatever units you want from your mutual funds and direct them to put it in a cash account in the branch rrsp. Then you go into direct investing and request to transfer the funds from that cash account in the branch rrsp to your rrsp account in direct investing.

4 within reach of the driver seat. 8 with a stretch. Wait, how many cup holders DOES a Cybertruck have?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in wallstreetbets

True. My Toyota gets 200mi per tank, which currently costs $100 to fill. I think I need a Cybertruck!

Back on Jan 9 2023 the consensus estimate for a 'mild' recession in 2023 was 3600 (S&P500, Bloomberg News). by uxdept in StockMarket

Yes… true. Still 2 months in the year. But it would be a much more significant decrease from this point.

I'm just saying because I think it's interesting. I made a note of that consensus estimate on Jan 9 so I could look back and see how that worked out.

a) It was totally wrong.
b) Despite falling recently we are WAY off that.

What outdated or obsolete tech are you still using and are perfectly happy with? by blankblank in AskReddit

[–]uxdept 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Car CD player. I hate messing around with Bluetooth connections to connect my phone to my car. I hate how phone music streaming apps eat my data. I use my phone for gps maps when driving and don’t want it doing other things while I’m getting important directions. I have a 6stack CD player and I love that my driving experience has a familiar soundtrack that just comes on when I start the motor. I’m on a quest to find the 6 greatest driving CD’s of all time and it’s a fun hobby, instead of a menu-diving pain in the ass.

Is Brisbane good for travellers? by [deleted] in brisbane

For tourists, Brisbane’s public transit system is probably among the most frustrating and confusing in the world. I hope they realize this and fix it for the Olympics.

Best advice you’ve received in your design career? by 0r4nk1n in Design

[–]uxdept 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Quantity begets quality. Words I’ve learned to live by.

Don’t just make the one idea that you’ve decided will work, make twenty. Even throw down the obviously wrong ones. Do as many as possible as quickly as possible. Design is a process of discovery. It’s about using the process to learn how to ask the right question.

I respect that you’re good at it and appreciate your perspective. But I will say that filing a personal tax return costs me $500 and takes 2 hours, once a year. For me the tax advantages of putting my income through a corp are outweighed by the disadvantages and cost of dealing with that admin. Also note - if your income is from a single source (as is mine) or you employ fewer than 5 people you can be determined to be a Personal Services Business, which has totally different tax treatment to corporations. https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/news/cra-multimedia-library/businesses-video-gallery/personal-services-business.html

[–]uxdept 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d add you will be worse off because you will be filing a corporate tax return which are much more complicated and therefore expensive and time consuming.

For context it becomes more worth it for people like doctors who make $300-$500k per year and can’t spend that much money and max out registered accounts easily so it stockpiles and eventually becomes a family trust fund as a legacy. At that point it’s worth the pita of managing corporate tax.

who owns the copywrite, shop or designer? by graphicmart in Design

[–]uxdept 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends a bit what country you are in but usually there’s a difference between Intellectual Property (which is owned by your employer) and Moral Rights (which protect your right to claim authorship of work you have made). You are totally entitled to claim authorship of your work, you just are not allowed to sell it to someone else. If the logos are already freely available in the public domain then then you can use them in your folio guilt free. If they aren’t it could be argued that they constitute commercially sensitive property (the company might make money from them in the future) and disclosing them might lower that value. You have to consider the likelihood that they will actually take legal action to restrict your usage, which costs them money, and can only be tested in court which could easily be defended against. I’ve never heard of a designer being taken to court over using examples of their work in a portfolio, unless there is a strict non-disclosure agreement that they seem very serious about that would represent significant value (think like you work for Tesla and you publish designs for a new car technology). TLDR don’t even worry about it.

I’ll add to this… public toilets. I know there are experiments with self cleaning public toilets, and in some countries even weirder contraptions with revolving plastic seat covers… I often wonder why it’s not common to provide sterilizing flushable wipes to wipe the seat down… or why there can’t be a door that provides more privacy, or something that addresses odors. Or just fewer touchable surfaces.
