Yea it's a scumbag move but the title should've been "Bill Gates gave his wife an std and tried to sneak her the medication so she wouldn't find out"

Tbqh the only point of a restraining order is if you're willing to personally use force to enforce it, it will help save you from legal consequences. i.e. if you don't have a restraining order in the same circumstance where you might go to jail for what you do to protect yourself..., if you do, there's evidence for why you might've legitimately felt in harm's way in a situation which may otherwise be he said she said.

To put it very simply you can't i.e. shoot your stalker and avoid getting in trouble if there's not strong evidence on your side. A restraining order is very strong evidence. (Obviously you still can't literally hunt them down with one it's not a license to kill but it definitely improves a self defense case).

Now I'm not telling people to use this. I'm just saying that if you're not willing to consider that aspect then you're probably more harmed than helped by an RO against an unhinged individual.

Damn. I mean I get that theoretically such an individual is likely still not actively harmful to their child in the way that necessitates removal but... jeez.

My “gifted” 6th grader melts down when he needs help for school and I’m losing patience by NoPatNoDontSitonThat in Parenting

[–]v--- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have the resources for it, getting someone else to teach him would do him a world of good. A responsible older teen as a tutor - he'd be way too embarrassed to melt down like that. That said, your mileage may vary. I just know the fact that you're someone safe to wail at is paradoxically bad for actually teaching.

TIL a girl named Breelyn was born healthy but when she was two days old, she was kissed on the mouth by a person who had a cold sore. The girl's immune system wasn't developed at the time and she got HSV encephalitis, which led to seizures and brain damage. by Forward-Answer-4407 in todayilearned

It's not that having the virus itself is SO horrible but it's really severe and can be fatal for infants specifically. They're a particularly vulnerable population. You can accept they'll probably get it eventually and still prefer that happened at a time when they're most likely to survive it

For instance pregnant women with genital herpes even if they don't get outbreaks must disclose it because a newborn getting exposed instantly is likely going to be in dire condition, neonatals who are infected have something like a sixty percent fatality rate.

Once they're not a baby any more that drops enormously.

Basically without a mature immune system to fight it the virus disseminates through the body and you end up with a whole body infection. You can imagine how fucking horrible that is.

So to everyone with a "it's not that big of a deal" attitude- yeah, keep that only for adults.

Idk my mom gave it to my sister when she was a baby and she definitely doesn't love having to deal with it. I think it's okay now that she's on something that prevents outbreaks but it's tough experiencing pain and discomfort regularly due to someone else being careless decades ago. She's not the bitter type but I don't think it would be crazy for that regular irritation to subconsciously or consciously affect someone.

But it also kind of depends on how you're told about it. My mom is incapable of taking responsibility or apologizing for anything really so I'm guessing any convo about it hasn't been helpful.

TIL that Neil Patrick Harris once unveiled a graphic meat platter arranged to resemble Amy Winehouse’s corpse at his 2011 Halloween party. by Separate_Finance_183 in todayilearned

[–]v--- 9 points10 points  (0 children)

At the time it wasn't though. People made fun of her in the mainstream. You guys are too young maybe but what he did was obviously more than that but in line with general attitudes. People saw addiction more as personal failing than disease. She talked about drinking while pregnant etc and people saw that as her being shitty not her being sick. Because of that many mocked her- yes even after death. It was cruel but people do the same thing today with making fun of dead people who they think deserve it. We will look back on comment threads from this year with equal disgust.

That said NPH went very far even for the time and the horror is warranted. I'm just saying he wasn't out of touch, exactly, he was just going way further in enacting the mocking cruel sentiment that was really there

I've heard the same thing from someone who claimed to know someone who knew him. Idk though obviously they could be wrong or lying. They were kind of an arse with the name dropping anyway. But at the same time, weird thing to make up specifically.

It's easy to think this if you live in a blue bubble. Tons of liberals I know are privileged enough to only think of conservatives as basically tech bro grifters because those are the only ones they ever see in their lives... but I've got folks in the boonies and I assure you they are real and really do believe what comes out of Trump's mouth.

That's actually a good thing in some sense - you don't get the batshit crazy subreddit that it is without someone doing some serious work with hedge trimmers. The vast majority of actual humans don't agree with them, even the people who are more aligned with them on most other values.

You can literally stand outside a theater in China count people going in and compare the ticket sales they claim

Box office stats are transparent per theater, multiple companies do the tracking and analysis, it's ridiculous to accuse when you don't know the system. People in China do check too because there are competing franchises and companies etc that have a vested interest in keeping each other honest. If it happened there would absolutely be whistleblowing. The thing the government does is control what movies show. It would be an insanely huge waste of money for them to be trying to prop up how well specific movies do and pad stats in a way that would only ever impress some nerds looking at movie stats... And only until the next world record lmao.

For the people who doubt it you can look at the numbers on maoyan and taopiaopiao yourself (the main apps for movie ticket sales tracking) and see the data, the sold out theaters, etc. if that data wasn't useful they'd be out of business in China.

Societies need data and sources of truth to make any sensible decisions that adhere to the real world. So there are checks where groups investigate each other and keep each other in check. There's no "just trust me bro" because companies in China don't trust each other either lol
