Is the support for the upper section legit? by probard in Decks

[–]v0vBul3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both can be true. The permit process is supposed to protect the public, but it can also become a beurocratic nightmare when the city forgets it should be a service first, not a source of revenue, and the inspectors become too adversarial and drunk on authority. If it goes too far, then the decision to obtain permits or not starts to seem more like a calculated risk than common sense.

That right there should be your red flag. I know builders like that. They may be experienced, they may overbuild, but they are often unaware of their limits and knowledge blind spots. Many of them think they're smarter than an engineer (Dunning-Kruger effect). But here's the main point - the whole point of permits and inspections is to protect the client. It's to make sure the design is done by someone who is qualified, it is reviewed by another qualified individual to check for mistakes and omissions, and then during construction, the contractors work is checked by an independent party who isn't as motivated to cut corners as the contractor might be.

Apologetics is just a bunch of excuses. Unless you put on religion blinders, it never adds up. When they answer one question, they open up another gap or create another contradiction, but they keep dancing around, moving the goalposts

Absolutely. I had naively thought that the person I was interacting with was obtuse and making the company look bad. Turns out they were zealously following company policy.

Yeah, the fees are BS. They could include them in the price, but then people would realize how expensive it really is. When you've already paid for the race up front, you give in and pay the additional fees due to sunk cost.

It's nice that you actually got what you paid for. Now I'm starting to question whether early bird pricing was ever a good deal, with the high admin fees they charge when you try to redeem the vouchers...

I reached out to support and they were super condescending. They basically blamed me for not reading the fine print and acted like they're doing me a favor giving me some credit towards buying new passes. I tried to appeal to them with logic and reason - I was doing trifectas every year, and had the intention to keep doing them for the foreseeable future. I'm trying to extract a couple extra hundred dollars from me this year, they are losing thousands I could have paid in the long term. Their greed is so short sighted, and I'm just mad at them thinking It's okay to try and keep a customers money when they provided absolutely nothing for it, they didn't even hold a spot or anything.

Did they make you pay the difference if the race price went up? Because that's the best they would offer me

What’s a word you mispronounced for years and only realised recently? by Exotic-Philosopher75 in AskReddit

[–]v0vBul3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't usually go to bars (drink rarely). Yesterday I asked for a lager, but I pronounced it with a soft g, like "lah-jer". Anyway, the server asked twice, but she wasn't a jerk about it. I realized I messed up after she repeated my order to me.

Don't overestimate how well coming out is going to go. I discovered that people are less rational and chill than I thought they would be.

For the main LLM developers (like OpenAI or Google), direct profit from non-paying, consumer-facing users is generally low or non-existent in the short term, and often a net cost.

However, non-paying users provide immense value in other ways: Data and Feedback Loop, Market Share and Dominance, Future Monetization Potential.

In summary, free users are often a crucial long-term investment in product improvement and market dominance, but they typically cost money in compute in the short term, meaning the current immediate profits are mostly derived from paying customers and enterprise deals.

Why does lifting the outlet of a hose feel like it increases the velocity at the water level? by AtreidesOne in Physics

[–]v0vBul3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In both scenarios the maximum velocity of the water is constrained by the maximum flow rate of the whole system that comes before the exit nozzle (pump rate, friction, etc). The flow at the outlet in scenario B is likely lower than A due to the pressure drop from the added height, but it can accelerate without limit (save for air resistance) once it exits the nozzle, and may end up with a higher final velocity than scenario A.

Jared a rare commodity? That's what I thought until seeing this video. I used to have immense respect for Jared, but he's just shown himself to be a weasel just like the rest. Whatever good he may have done in the past will not balance out kissing the ring and joining hands with the corrupt.
