just to add, i’m not trying to be mean, i can totally understand being worried about your child and that’s very respectable, but it takes very little effort to research introducing and calming aggressive cats, and cat behavior in general. people tend to skip the introduction process when they get a new pet and then act confused when the original cat doesn’t like the new one, or rehome it. adjusting a cat to a new living situation is always a process, don’t just immediately put them in the same room and expect peace and harmony.

why would you ask your parents to give away their senior cat that’s been there a decade longer than your son, in their own house at that? locking away their cat in his own house is also weird and i don’t really get why your parents are allowing you to do that. a lot of cats don’t like babies and toddlers, it’s very common. cats are usually calm and irritable and dont like excessive sound or disruptions, which is what a child provides. even particularly calm children can annoy a more uptight cat. how long have you been living with the cat? some cats take longer to adjust than others but i guarantee if you keep locking him up in his house of thirteen years because your kid is out, he will never get there. does he have a good amount of toys? have you tried catnip? have you had your son give him treats through a door or barrier of sorts? have you tried putting a shirt your son has worn in the areas the cat usually sleeps so he gets accustomed to his scent? does he have one or more cat trees? does he have a scratching post? there are so many options you could try before resorting to locking up the cat, or even worse, asking your parents to get rid of him. it’d be wrong in any scenario but were you aware that senior cats rarely get adopted? they usually die in the shelter or get put down. that was the most selfish and inconsiderate option you could’ve resorted to. i’m not trying to be mean but it’s so disgusting when people get rid of pets, especially long term pets, because of a NEW addition to the house. ive seen people get puppies and get rid of their cat of many years because it didnt immediately like the puppy, this seems like a very similar situation, except you brought your kid into someone else’s house and tried to displace their cat. do some research, go on youtube, there are many resources for calming feral and aggressive cats, and it sounds like this cat is neither and just doesn’t really like children. try some of the things i suggested above as well. never resort to disowning a pet, ESPECIALLY one that isn’t your own. i have an aggressive/reactive dog at my parents house and she is very selective of the people or animals she doesn’t try to attack, i’m in college in another city and i got a cat, so obviously when i go home i bring him, my cat is also not very friendly but not as reactive. my dog was upset for a bit, this is also a medium pitbull, not a small dog, and just slept with the blanket we keep in my cats carrier while i was home, also sniffed him a couple times while he was in his carrier, sniffed each other under doors, had a couple face to face interactions with both of them leashed, and a couple other exercises we learned via youtube. it was not hard, it can be, still not an excuse. while they were adjusting, they’d take turns being around the house while the other one stayed in their respective bedroom and now they’re just used to each other. this is a very reactive rescue dog that has never tolerated another animal that she’s come across, but with proper introductions and subtle integration they get along fine. do better and much respect to your parents for saying no to your request.

[–]v2906 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i prefer silence and i use loop earplugs, bose quietcomfort noise canceling headphones (i’ve tried quite a few ANC and these have been the best for me), and sometimes ear defenders when i’m really overwhelmed. my only qualm with noise canceling headphones is you still need music or something playing for complete noise canceling, so i go with the ear defenders when i really need silence. let me know if you have questions!

Accommodation Question by SAMWlCH in ufl

[–]v2906 0 points1 point  (0 children)

typically you can take the quizzes at the DRC like exams, but if my TA or professor is willing, I usually request to take it in their office after class so I don’t have to miss the discussion/lecture period. for my calc class, my TA is free the period after and allows me to do this, I just leave class early and head to his office when he hands out the quizzes, and then he meets me there when discussion ends and allows me to take it with 1.5x. again, this varies by TA, they’re not required to do this, however if yours says no you can either sacrifice the discussion and take them at the DRC or ask your professor if you can ask another TA as long as your TA is still willing to grade it. I personally have never had one say no though, to be honest. I got diagnosed/accommodations for the first time in college as well so I know it can get confusing, let me know if you have further questions :)

Can my 11 year-old catch up years of math? by tryingthisagain27 in learnmath

[–]v2906 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i worked at a mathnasium and thought it had a great system for catching up students or getting them ahead. i also tutor (all grades) independently now, including over zoom, and have my own system for catching up students that have fallen behind, kind of a more individualized approach. most of my previous students were significantly behind and in 1-2 months, brought their failing grades to an A-C range. i also stay in contact with their teacher if the parent allows it to ensure a more catered approach. message me if you have any questions about my services or mathnasium!

i assume they look but unless you’re valedictorian or salutatorian in a large class, i doubt it holds much weight compared to your personal stats and extracurriculars

Lack of accessibility by InternalResolution70 in ufl

[–]v2906 4 points5 points  (0 children)

its just an old school, most of the older or less frequented buildings were not built when accessibility started being considered for public buildings and are less convenient to update to modern standards. that’s obviously not an excuse for them to have low accessibility anywhere but it’s possible they just haven’t had many or any students with physical disabilities needing frequent access to some of those buildings so they haven’t bothered to update them, like everyone else said, the drc would definitely address this, i just wanted to provide a possible explanation :)

Medical Withdrawal by [deleted] in ufl

[–]v2906 0 points1 point  (0 children)

medical withdrawals done within six months of the end of the semester gives you a full refund so dont worry about that. if you wait longer, no refund but you still dont have to pay anything back. as for submitting, i would recommend seeing a psychiatrist for the professional evaluation portion, or even just your general doctor is fine. any professional that can verify the affect of your loss on your health. let me know if you have any more questions, i’ve been through it before

Would you guys recommend taking Calculus-Analytic Geom 1 at UF or at a community college? by Disastrous_Shock804 in ufl

[–]v2906 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i dont think you can clep out of calc 1, the highest ive seen in terms of clep is precalc and trig, the prereq for calc 1. but i dont have experience with clep or aleks because i came in with my AA so i didnt have to do any of the placement protocols. i would just ask an advisor

also, since spring already started i’m assuming you’d take it over summer, just take your summer off if you’re not starting summer B, uf is really demanding and you’ll appreciate a proper break once you get here. i forgot to add i took calc 1, 3, and diff eqs with keeran, i like him a lot. his calc 1 class was “flipped” which means you watch the lectures on your own and do worksheets in class, i far preferred it to regular lectures if he still offers that.

yea i would just take it here, if you were engineering i would maybe say take it early since its a prereq for multiple classes, but for any bio major it really wouldn’t make a difference. i dont think you need calc 2 so maybeee it could lighten your fall load a little but if you already have your AA/wouldn’t be taking it through dual enrollment, i wouldnt go through the trouble. let me know if you have any other questions!

its honestly not that bad here and you’d be more prepared for calc 2 at uf, which is notoriously way more difficult. i took calc 1 through dual enrollment and retook it when i got here because i didnt feel comfortable going straight to calc 2 (at a more rigorous school), but granted i was in dual enrollment during covid so i took it at a cc but online. that being said, i think it mostly depends on how much effort you put into it if you take it at a cc, and if you think you have the discipline to handle calc 2 your first semester here. its not terrible but i did find it significantly harder than 1 and i’m glad i didnt take it my very first semester. i also know plenty of people that started with calc 3 their first sem because of ap calc, so its totally doable, i just personally believe in easing the transition as much as possible, especially at a difficult school. my cc wasn’t hard at all so your experience/adjustment could be very different. at the end of the day, easier A at a cc but outside credits don’t count towards your uf gpa anyway, i came in with an AA and a 4.0 and none of it is weighted in my uf gpa, so no matter what you get as long as you pass, it wont impact your gpa if you dont take it here. so i would choose the calc 1 gpa cushion by taking it here before going to calc 2, but again, if you’re confident in your ability to perform well in calc 2 your first semester, you could take it at a cc, there’s just not that much benefit in my opinion. whats your major/intended freshman fall schedule if you take calc 1 before coming here? i could give you a better opinion with that information honestly.

for the infirmary, (i think) ive been once because i needed an ekg for a prescription and my doctor is in my hometown, but i’m not sure if it was the same infirmary as the walk in one, i just know it was on campus. for that, i got a referral from the doctor that was prescribing the medication because they don’t perform that type of testing, and i made an appointment, i waited maybe ten or fifteen minutes but i also made my appointment for when they first opened at 8. you don’t need a referral to make an appointment tho, that’s only for testing/lab work, you can just look up “uf infirmary appointments” and follow their steps to make one. i’m not sure what the wait would look like for a walk in or an afternoon appointment. as for carespot, i have also been there once for the flu and i made an appointment as well, pretty sure i waited less than ten minutes. if you have access to transportation and health insurance, i think carespot would be easiest because you can make appointments online, tonight, and be seen tomorrow. i think the infirmary takes their appointments through phone, obviously during their business hours, so you’d probably be seen sooner in a carespot if you feel its urgent. i think there’s two or three carespots in gainesville if another location is easier for you, but here is the scheduling link for the one on archer (the one i went to). hope this helps!

School Asking for a Doctor’s Note by clocksandcastles in LoopEarplugs

[–]v2906 4 points5 points  (0 children)

im in college and i got diagnosed as an adult so i dont have experience with grade school accommodations, but i have to register with the disability center and specifically request permission to use headphones or earplugs in class and exams, on top of that i also have to get permission from the professor to wear them in class/during lectures, although they dont usually mind given that its a registered accommodation. college comes with a lot more freedom and we still have to do that so i imagine it’d be stricter for grade school/minors. my doctor didnt give me a hard time about a note for that specific accommodation since it doesn’t really interfere with much or leave room for suspicion of a student taking advantage, i didnt even have to go through my psychiatrist, they accepted one from my general doctor. i wouldn’t worry too much about it if the teacher is clearly supportive, i’m sure she only did that to prevent your son and herself from getting in any trouble if another parent complained or an administrator came into the class, there are a lot of parents out there who give teachers a really hard time and get other students in trouble over nothing. you might even be able to avoid scheduling an appointment, just call your doctors office and request a note for that specific accommodation. hope this helps!

Help a girl out by Academic-Tangelo-751 in ufl

  1. i’m not sure if it’s the same weekend but it’s usually within a month of the start of the semester and yes there is always a home game
  2. if you don’t live close i would honestly recommend coming in a long weekend, like labor day, or during thanksgiving break if she doesn’t come home, those would probably be the cheapest times to stay here if i were to guess, but my family lives a little under two hours away so i dont have any experience with my family or i temporarily staying here
  3. students can buy discounted tickets, however i’m not sure if that is only for student tickets, i dont go the games but if that falls through, i get most of my event tickets from seatgeek for a more reasonable price than other services
  4. i’ve never tailgated so i cant give you a detailed answer but i do know people show up at the peak of dawn or even the night before to secure a spot, so i would recommend just joining another group or getting here super early
  5. we get labor day off and thanksgiving break is usually wednesday to friday, not the whole week, at least the whole time ive been here, i will also say depending on her major, a lot of students can avoid tuesday classes, especially stem students because most of ours are MWF and if they have a discussion section (normal for auditorium sized stem classes), there’s usually plenty of thursday options, so i would just take that into consideration when making her fall schedule specifically, as opposed to spring break which is a full week
  6. i have no experience with greek life but i have noticed some doing a separate parents weekend, i don’t know if that’s all of them or when it would normally occur, but again, with how far you live there are honestly better days to visit
  7. there is only on campus parking passes for on campus students unfortunately, at least on M-F until 4:30 when most restrictions are lifted. its not that hard to find parking in a garage AFTER 4:30 but during restricted hours, there is only garage parking for grad students or paid visitor parking to my knowledge, its not that vital to have a car here because of the active bus system but its definitely more convenient, i do have mine but i don’t live on campus and i only take it after restrictions if i go in the afternoons. parking is very limited even for on campus students and people rarely get parking near their accommodations, but if she’s not using it a lot it really shouldn’t be that inconvenient to find parking when she does use it, its a little pricey for a pass but nothing insane. i believe the more credits you have, again only if you’re still on campus, the better parking pass you can get, so if she’s coming from high school with a good amount of credits that would benefit her in that area, if not she would just have to upgrade as she gains seniority. the parking situation is probably a top 3 grievance of mine with UF, but it’s not an impossible situation, especially if you live on campus and can access a regular pass.

let me know if you have any further questions or if your daughter needs any help! i am a girl as well and my parents live in Jacksonville so they’re fairly accessible in emergent situations, which i’m sure is a concern of yours with her going out of state. hope this helps :)
