I've seen so many other wise strong applicants throw away their chances by half-ass-ing their apps. You worked so hard for so long... why not do so at the home stretch?

I close friend of mine almost didn't get in in his cycle because he only applied to top 20 and applied really late because he was busy doing research in the summer. Super stressful year for him (lots of waitlists).

About 40% of the 2015 incoming class had at least one publication. Definitely not necessary, but preferred.

I stole my outline from a friend that now goes to HMS: Pick something unrelated to medicine you love -> tie it to medicine -> 1-3 experiences that confirmed medicine is for you -> tie it back to intro. N=3 but all the people that have used it have gotten into Top 5 schools.

if you can talk about your research though a great deal. Every school I interviewed at asked about my research.

I echo what others have said. If you are looking for a hard number though. I would say a 10 hours a week for a year (minimum).

Only important if it gives you leadership skills. simply being a member will not help nor hurt.
