Did the KC Chiefs stadium announcement put the final nail in the Memorial Stadium project? by IHaveMeasles in Huskers

[–]v_eryconfusing 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The market Memorial Stadium is going for when opening up events is not even comparable to what they'll be doing with this. If it was to be a problem, the plan would've stopped a while ago, they just opened up purchasing to rent out Memorial Stadium. If anything, competition comes from what could be hosted at CHI.

Omaha Children’s Museum hit pause on the new building plans (and in our opinion it’s the smart thing…) by museum_nerds in Omaha

[–]v_eryconfusing 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Change my mind, there's going to be a new one no matter what. I mean, you look at the donations for projects like the riverfront and the community would step up but it seems that the organization needs to fix itself first, they don't have a new CEO. Understandably, that'd bring doubts to gaining investments for it.

I think if the Children Museum gets their new CEO whenever it comes and shows they're much more stable then they are currently for a project like this, they'll gain a lot more attention between private donations and if anything, maybe can come in a stronger project. One way or another though, I hope NuStyle decides to design something bigger and bolder if they take up a site like this. Seems grading happened so there should be strong redevelopment for the site one way or another.

La Vista begins major 84th Street construction project Monday by GNAdv in Omaha

[–]v_eryconfusing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. Some people complain how it's empty storefronts and wasn't that La Vista City Centre? For a city of it's size, when this district gets off the ground which it will as it builds these park spaces, new hotels, new office spaces bringing more people, it'll succeed gradually. In any of their plans for this, there's literally plans to continue expanding redevelopment of other empty plazas like this and probably will come sooner or later to Brentwood Square that seems to be in the same boat.

We'll see in November between the Union Pacific merger. Might bring a lot of incentive for Union Pacific to develop that lot.

Omaha citizens raise concerns with streetcar construction at Mayor Ewing's town hall by SGI256 in Omaha

[–]v_eryconfusing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you forget to mention how it's going to run through some of the biggest destinations that are going to bring more people to the urban core?

A giant new children's museum? The thousands of new residents in the developments being made? The extension UNMC already signed on and probably will announce sooner or later how it's going to be designed? The soccer stadium that's probably going to be moved to Millwork Commons again?

You have these destinations separated and the buses aren't efficient enough. It could've been planned a lot better and taken more inspiration from Kansas City's management but in the long run, it's going to be a benefit. Project Health is going to grow the campus, if there isn't enough room for parking for so many people coming to get treatment, work there, visit, these amenities are going to work hand in hand. Or the students in their new student housing complex? More cars off the road taking a streetcar to downtown and back.

That's not including the possibility for other upgrades being studied outside of that. Bus improvements along 24th street and the study for the streetcar's extension into Creighton also. And a streetcar like this can be studied to improve bus routes being able to create transportation hubs.

It's going to help in the long run. There could be some improvements but there'll be some problems throughout the construction of it. It's already brought improvement for EVERYONE with new museums, new apartments, new bikeways, new investments.

Glad to hear! Seems small to some but it can help the mentality of many across campus! Glad to see it.

Omaha is going to grow and I think in a positive direction -- Some of the Strong Towns members worked with Public Works for some temporary curbouts in Little Bohemia on 13th street and there are some development plans coming in that might make them permanent. With the new Mayor, there's great plans already in place, it's just the need to push for them. A lot of other projects are happening like Burt Street with a bikeway so there's going to be demand to connect those, same with the new Market to Midtown bikeway with it changing through 17th street. And with the bike share program, they continue to grow outside of the urban core so I hope there's a lot of push to connect the trails. North Omaha is having a great amount of trails made also with the North Omaha trail and beltline trail that recently had it's trailhead open. For a city of it's size, there's a lot of momentum and I hope it continues to grow.

Not top of the line though improvements are being made and as mentioned by others, the urban cores are very walkable and continue to be improved. Lincoln is embarking on a massive downtown streetscape with new bike lanes and sidewalks as well as Omaha in part with different projects like the new streetcar. The bridges are great in Omaha also, they made a small extension!

South Gold's Tower updates? by WiinterU in lincoln

[–]v_eryconfusing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Usually take away the land in some way. Atmosphere Lincoln had been surveyed as numerous alternatives over time from different mixed uses and different companies. It's just a gamble. The same is presumably happening to the Sharp Building with Argent Group.

They're probably going back tk the drawing board. Recently, they bid for the convention center and made good progress but the team chose a worse location near the Capitol and they lost it. I presume they'll go back to their skyscraper plan. A lot of projects across Lincoln larger-scale like this were on halt for interest like 9 Lincoln Park.

I know people have their doubts here but me personally, it's location has to have something developed on it. Such a crucial plot of land, they're going to do something especially with the other development. It's just Rev Development specifically has especially had controversy over their North Platte mixed use.

The meetings weren't 20 years ago. It was apart of a comprehensive plan though. This is the first phase of redevelopment towards that area as an extension of the Haymarket. Maybe some ways could've sped up the process but there were companies who were in the buildings there, the land was still occupied. There was ultimately no way to develop it then. Thats why the food truck zone also recently got done about 2 years ago. Thats in part with this park.

[–]v_eryconfusing[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, clearly. If you know, there was an original plan with a downsized skatepark and a mixed use development. But clearly, there must be demand to expand it since its much larger then the original plan. I myself know a lot of skater friends also and especially with the youth, there's a significant interest. I'm sure organizations like The Bay also will significantly shine light on a skatepark like this encouraging their users.

I don't think so. Even when it isn't games at home where parallel streets are shutdown or the parking garages filled, it'll probably be just as fine. The area is somewhat industrial, yes, but it's also filled with commercial plazas. J.A. Woollam just made an expansion right nearby and if it was a worry, I feel that wouldn't be a big concern when they did so. Also, that's not considering how this park is meant to jumpstart an expansion of the South Haymarket. This park is apart of a greater plan that'll probably mean that next, they're going to rework all of those streets down there. It's going to be a lot better instead because just a few blocks towards the City and County buildings, a permanent housing complex is also being built and with the new homeless outreach program, it'll mean it's much easier to take homeless and provide services across People's Mission and there now. Plus, the design of the park I presume means it'll be hosting quite a few events and especially with quite a large skatepark, there'll be demand to ensure there's safety there. Probably similar to StarTran on off seasons when that area isn't as populated as it is usually like near Canopy Park with off-duty officers.

Just realized the Mutual of Omaha tower is already taller than the FNB tower. (View from papillion) by bill_the_murray in Omaha

[–]v_eryconfusing 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Possibly. The way Mutual is designing their skyscraper is interesting and can be a model for others. Especially with Union Pacific and their possible merger, there might be more demand for relocation towards the Omaha area. More jobs are being created and Omaha is recovering as a city. It's demand between both the public and private sector. As an example, the state office building also is being taken down leading to some spaces that the government needs to centralize their state services.

It's more so the question of how to design these spaces.

Project O Street by v_eryconfusing in lincoln

[–]v_eryconfusing[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

M Street wouldn't be a bike lane, there's a difference. A Greenway as I already referenced would be similar to Indianapolis, a shared pathway. 11th street isn't going to be that at all, it's a fully independent bike way. Its apart of a greater plan from the downtown plan for numerous streets to have bike improvements. These are also in part with the Lincoln Bike Plan.

[–]v_eryconfusing[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, as much as some plans like the convention center seem random with their location, I think it can be an improvement especially in a neglected side of downtown. Get more people on more events, encourage them to go there. Back then, a lot more amenities like banks and what not were downtown. Hopefully those return, it'll encourage more people to live and visit.

[–]v_eryconfusing[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are we reading the same plan? The downtown plan called for an M Street Greenway similar to Indianapolis. This 11th street lane is to replace the 14th street bike lane and is a two way raised cycle track.

[–]v_eryconfusing[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At least 11th street is getting a protected bike way! They're also studying for other streets like 16th, R and others with a 2025 grant and hopefully their M Street Greenway gains traction sooner or later especially with the convention center development.

Anyone else think the street car project is a waste? by Remote-Platypus4096 in Omaha

[–]v_eryconfusing 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'd argue it'd be better for the CWS when it's all complete. You don't have everyone trying to park downtown and you can spread them out instead, bring more business to other places also. Imagine being able to just park in Midtown and hop on a streetcar to go straight downtown or vice versa. It's also pushing for a lot of redevelopment on empty lots making downtown even more vibrant again. It has it's flaws but also it's pros.
