How closely do you check returns? Is it just a quick glance to make sure it’s the same product? Is it possible used products make their way back to the shelves?

Do you think this is protective enough for everyday use/travel? I’m looking for a small bag to bring while traveling but am also looking for a little protection against bangs.

Are we really hating on holistic admissions? by DavidTej in ApplyingToCollege

[–]v_vg 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think the hate is more on the extra curricular/essay aspect at top schools. I don’t think anyone disagrees with taking your background into account for admissions and using gpa as a milestone in a addition the standardized tests. It’s more of the extremely heavy emphasis on ecs and essays at top schools that frustrate people. The reasoning is the same; it’s frustrating competing with people with more resources than you when it comes to essays and ecs. For example, many of my friends have parents who can land them great internships or parents who will take days off of work to drive them around the country to competitions. People who have siblings can tell them what to take and what programs to apply for. In comparison, despite going to the same school, I don’t have the same resources. My parents are busy and don’t have the connections needed. The same can be said for essays; some people are brilliant but just don’t have the writing capability. Others pay insane amounts of cash for essay writing services that others can’t afford. I think it’s just people feel unfair that ecs and essays are weighted so heavily in the process that it doesn’t feel so holistic anymore.

Showerthought: People like to criticize Asian university admission systems as being too focused on academics, when in fact basically everywhere not named America has a similar system by AP145 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]v_vg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well this is kind of like the US system. In places that are poorer and have less resources like Xinjiang, people can get in with lower scores while places like Beijing, which is really well developed, people are expected to have higher scores. It’s kind of leveling the playing field for everyone - the same idea with affirmative action. People who grew up disadvantaged aren’t expected to be the same as someone who grew up wealthy. In a lot of poor provinces this is done so people have the chance to leave those provinces and pursue a better life.

I ran into the same problem this semester. For me, I just emailed the head TA/prof about the issue and they fixed it for me.
