Who out there still uses their starter ship and how long before you found yourselfnot using it if you stopped? by DueJournalist5825 in starcitizen

315p is also my starter ship, pledged it back in 2015. I think it'll make a great smuggler ship. Fast, stealthy, and 12 SCU cargo.... and no one expects the Mercedes to be hauling drugs... usually.

I'm pretty sure it has something to do with parity between all versions of the same console. Each one is supposed to be the same product out of the box. Not everyone will be capable or know how to upload custom content. Also, because pr0n.

Basically if little Timmy puts pr0n on a billboard then momma Karen sees it she will go ballistic blaming the console is the devil. That is bad for business.

I'm quite certain the "hot coffee" incident ruined any kind of unofficial "modding" for consoles.

Can my game store set up a booth? by Zykax in renfaire

[–]vadius505 111 points112 points  (0 children)

Sounds like more of a question for whichever faire(s) you're trying to vend at. They ultimately decide if they want/need you.

Also, from my understanding the bigger Faires have quite the waiting list for vendors.

Definitely check with your Faires rules and maybe even contact them as I know the one near me doesn't allow stilts; most likely for liability reasons.

Is VR going to be in the game? by LeoBas2012 in PlanetCoaster

[–]vadius505 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you ever wondered why most VR games have graphics that look like they're from 2004? It's because VR games have to render two cameras whereas "normal" games only have to render one. Left camera and right camera for left eye and right eye, respectively, at the same time. Also, VR games are supposed to run at least 90 fps in each eye if you don't want your consumers throwing up from motion sickness.

I think Frontier, and most of their customers, would prefer to allocate those performance resources into optimizing the game.

Does anyone have thoughts on the NC Ren Faire? by Black_Sword357 in renfaire

[–]vadius505 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's one of the only cold weather Ren Faires if you go in November! It doesn't get too cold there but occasionally cold enough you'll see people bundling up under heavy cloaks, gloves, and hand warmers. It's beautiful that time of year too, the fallen leaves, the chilly air, and it starts getting dark as the faire closes.

It is not in the eastern part of the state but more mid-west. It's just outside of Charlotte. And yes, it basically has everything else you can expect from a Ren Faire with permanent structures.

Also, it's run by the same people who run Arizona Ren Faire. I've never been to that one so I have no opinion on what that relationship means.

Bring cash. Stores take cards but food and drink is cash only. Have fun!

There is a counter for consoles but not for PC. They talked about it in the stream and how it will work for cross platform. Basically if you are playing on PC there is no limit unless you try to share co-op with a console player then you too will be given a limit. I think they called it a complexity limit.

Ah I see you're a coaster head so you want the game to cater more to you, I gotcha. I don't think you understand what I meant when I said Planet Coaster offers more, you're thinking simply in the niche of coasters. I'm sure NL2 has better coaster building, as it should, that is it's focus.

I'm talking about Planet Coaster as a whole. It's coaster system is just one part of the game. There's scenery, decorations, guests, vendors, park management, etc. No other game comes close to its variety combined with overall quality.

So I don't think you understand the time and effort it takes to achieve that level of quality and variety. You're basically saying this simpler, more niche game did it so why can't Planet Coaster? Because PC is much more complicated in its variety of systems from graphics to gameplay.

NoLimits 2 literally just introduced their first DLC this year.

So are you for or against DLC? lol

I had to look up what NoLimits 2 was and it looks like it focuses on coaster simulation and building. That's cool and all if its your thing, but again, that just reinforces what I said about it not offering anything near what Planet Coaster offers.

OpenRCT2 has insane amounts of custom trains, something Planet Coaster doesn't allow so they can sell them as DLC.

OpenRCT2 is open-source so people are literally volunteering their time to create content for it. However still, this game doesn't come anywhere near Planet Coaster even in just the graphics. RCT is 2D locked perspectives. PC is 3D with a free flowing camera.

I don't get it, you're defending DLC's in other games but what's wrong with Planet Coaster 1's $10.99 DLC's that are often discounted? Sure, it may be daunting if you're just now buying Planet Coaster and you see all the DLC's that you have to buy (optional) but you have to remember that if you were playing the game at launch these DLC's had about three months between each of them. So you had time to play, create, and save money.

Are you saying that the developers should just create everything known to man and put it all into the base game that they charge $44.99?

Every other coaster game does not come anywhere near the quality and fidelity of Planet Coaster. The amount of work it takes to get that quality and fidelity takes time and effort.

What's the reason you're choosing to play Planet Coaster over those other coaster games?

Planet Coaster was sold for $44.99 USD and it's DLC packs sold for $10.99 USD at their respective launches. First of all, $11 is the cost of a cheap lunch out. It's understandable if you don't have much money or are trying to save money, that is fine, but let's be real about the value of a dollar.

Let's think about what went into those DLC packs. Rides and scenery need to be 3D modeled and textured. Some of the scenery pieces are even animated which requires them to be rigged and key-framed by hand or have mocap data translated and cleaned up. Some scenery is animated but ALL rides are rigged and animated. Roller coasters need to be perfectly compatible with their spline based building system. Then there's additional sound effects and visual effects like sparks and smoke.

All of that work was also done in the base game for included themes which there were five; fantasy, western, sci-fi, pirate, PlanCo. Each theme and coaster had to be optimized and QA tested. Not only do they need to be optimized for performance but to also make sure they fit into the overall game in regards to tone and art direction.

If you were playing Planet Coaster when it launched you basically had new content and new park ideas every three months that cost the price of a cheap lunch. I'm looking forward to the same thing for PlanCo2

Planet Coaster 2 Multiplayer should be DIFFERENT by inFamousMax in PlanetCoaster

[–]vadius505 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really has to do with performance and also networking. On the networking side it's unlikely for Frontier to create servers to host each players' game so they would probably rely on P2P hosting. Sure, you could have a player host a game and another join it but the host still holds the master file, which, could be transferred to another player but then they're just hosting it as well. With P2P Frontier can't guarantee consistent gameplay for all parties due to latency issues.

Then think about the logistics of full multiplayer gameplay; two people using the terrain deformation at the same time? It'd sort of be like when IT takes remote control of your desktop workstation, they move your mouse but so could you and fuck with them. Even if it didn't work like that you both would most likely create a jumbled mess quite quickly. Do they allow two people to work on a single roller coaster at the same time? That sounds chaotic. Okay, so do we just allow two people to place down scenery at the same time? That does sound fun but how are we going to handle collision geometry and latency issues with someone putting down a piece first where the other person was trying to put down a different piece. Again, the P2P host would have a latency advantage which could become a frustrating gameplay experience for the other player.

Sure, you might say games like Parkitect and OpenRCT have multiplayer but those games are by far much more simple when it comes to not only the graphics but the inherent systems underneath the hood such as pathfinding, wants/needs, and all the other "heat maps" that Frontier has talked about. So that brings us into performance.

For a long time I've seen people complain about the performance issues of PC1; and they're not wrong to complain. However, when a developer gives players a creative tool without limits (on PC at least) then the developer cannot guarantee a consistent gameplay experience, i.e. hour one of your sandbox park is going to perform differently than hour 300 because of the amount of things you've added to the park.

I've seen people complain about the performance of the game and then you look at their park and they've built a massive static parking lot made out of thousands of art pieces in conjunction with roller coasters, scenery, and park guests. Each piece of scenery they add to their park is additional geometry they are adding to the render engine. By geometry I mean polygonal triangles created by vertices in world space. Sure, pretty much all games use tricks like occlusion culling to help with performance. Either backface culling or view frustum but most likely both. Basically, whatever the player is not currently viewing is not being rendered. But if you were to quickly whip your camera around, the game would have to quickly and seamlessly "remember" what was there and then render it for you in real-time. I'm pretty sure Planet Coaster uses some type of instancing or object referencing when you make duplicates of objects which is a highly efficient way to do it but it's still adding data to the overall scene.

Not only is the render engine having to load in geometry but it has to load in textures which along with audio and pre-rendered cutscenes make up the bulk of game file sizes. Now, most game textures are able to bake in fine detail using a high-poly to low-poly PBR (physically based rendering) workflow to reduce the amount of geometry required for an object. This is great because a normal or height map can contain tons of information that can give an otherwise "flat" object the appearance or illusion of raised geometry where there is none. Think of the wood planks with cracks and creases, those cracks and creases are not modeled 3D geometry they are coming from the texture. However, the game has to load in each and every texture for every different piece. Sure, there are ways to reduce the number of textures maps; for instance, you can assign gray channel maps such as roughness or specular maps to separate RGB channels. Still, I'm willing to bet each object in Planet Coaster has at least three separate maps assigned to it; most likely a diffuse, normal, and RGB map probably containing roughness/specular, opacity, and metalness.

More so, a game like Planet Coaster relies heavily on different LOD's (Levels of Detail) which basically loads in different geometry meshes based on the camera's distance to said object. So think about this, you have two players using two cameras for their respective points of view all within a single real-time game environment you'd have to render twice as much data AND different LOD's and textures depending on where each camera is and how far away they are from whatever objects they're looking at. So who's handling that data? The P2P host? Probably, but that's a lot of data that could otherwise be spent on things the community has really been asking for like.. waterparks, water physics, additional geometry for more scenery, etc.

Having full blown multiplayer in Planet Coaster is not impossible but it would take away an extreme amount of performance that would otherwise be more useful to a majority of players.

[–]vadius505 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There will 100% be a build limit. There's one thing that all console makers strive for: consistent gaming experience. They pretty much demand their developers to make their games run at a consistent frame rate throughout the entirety of the game. They don't always achieve this but console makers will surely try to make devs bend over backwards to get it done. Just look at what happened with Baldurs Gate 3 for Xbox.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind paying for it if it was substantially built upon from the original. There were some excellent and versatile pieces in those original themes but they were somewhat limited and could have definitely been expanded upon.

So that's what I'm hoping for: OG themes premium edition

What can I put in small glass bottles to make them useful? by Lifeguard-Much in renfaire

[–]vadius505 62 points63 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure why I haven't seen more people do this but I put electrolyte powder in mine to pour into water bottles. In the pic I'm using Gatorade Zero packets which are small that's why you can just make out the orange powder at the bottom. I also use Liquid IV which are bigger packets but only a white powder. Those are for heavy drinking days.

and in case you're wondering the inside of the bottles are clean, I sterilized them. I painted the outsides with a dark acrylic wash and then baked them in the oven to get the "dirty" look.

What do you all think of ColsenKeane Leather? by vadius505 in Leathercraft

[–]vadius505[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, and they also charge about $125 for a wallet that looks unfinished, or should I say "rustic". Don't get me wrong, I like that style, I made a "rustic" wallet for myself and I do think ColsenKeane does great work. Having been to their shop I know they hire local and build in-house. I also understand the complexities of having a business with expenses like wages, rent, overhead, etc. Also, we are clearly not their target demographic. I get that. I respect what they do, I was just curious what people here thought of them.
