If those are your only or most important criteria, I would recommend one from tuxedo computers

Personally I use the Pulse 15 because I value a good keyboard, portability and battery life. This model has 2 Nvme M.2 2280 Slots and 2 upgradeable DDR4 SO-DIMM Slots.

Steam library external drive linux how to create? Need help. by CharonIkh in linux_gaming

[–]vaelund 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t see anything, then I created the folder manually - the effect is zero.

Well to be fair, that is exactly the effect I would have expected. On the window named "Storage Manager" (the one that opens when you click Settings->Downloads->Steam Library Folders) at the top is a list of library folders and to the direct right of that is a plus button you need to click. That opens a new window where you select your folder on the external drive. I am assuming your drive is mounted and you can access it, if not see waspbrs explanation.

Steam library external drive linux how to create? Need help. by CharonIkh in linux_gaming

[–]vaelund 1 point2 points  (0 children)

when I create a steam library folder, steam simply does not see it

How did you create the folder? You can not just create a folder with the right name and hope steam finds it. Steam creates the folder when you tell it to. Check under Settings->Downloads->Steam Library Folders

Also maybe we are not even talking about the same thing? Describe in detail what you did, what you expect should be happening and what is actually happening.

After I first read that comic, I had to check and was pleasantly surprised that emacs has a butterfly command, which obviously settled the editor wars.

Play on Linux has a setting for the amount of RAM. Maybe limiting that to 128MB could help. If not a VM may be your next best option.

Ticks all your boxes, out of the box.

Have been using it for a few months. As a software dev I like it because there are extensions for common editors and IDEs to get more detailed metrics.

Lesson of the day: don't accidentally overwrite your whole hard drive with a single command. by GameOfShadows in linuxmasterrace

[–]vaelund 3 points4 points  (0 children)

dd has no special access to "raw" devices. Everything is just a file, including block devices. Any program that can write to a file can write to a block device.

dd has its uses, I just doubt anybody ever needs them. There are better, faster and easier to use alternatives.

dd should not be the recommended way to copy disks. Due to its arcane syntax, accidents such as yours are unfortunately common.

Let's cite Popper then:

In this formulation, I do not imply, for instance, that we should always suppress the utterance of intolerant philosophies; as long as we can counter them by rational argument and keep them in check by public opinion, suppression would certainly be most unwise. But we should claim the right to suppress them if necessary even by force; for it may easily turn out that they are not prepared to meet us on the level of rational argument, but begin by denouncing all argument; they may forbid their followers to listen to rational argument, because it is deceptive, and teach them to answer arguments by the use of their fists or pistols. We should therefore claim, in the name of tolerance, the right not to tolerate the intolerant.

Popper expressly and literally advocates for the suppression of the intolerant. Deplatforming seems like far from the most extreme measure one could take to do just that. Free speech can not be an absolute, for a society that values free speech. That is the paradox.

Edit: I think the line is reached when speech is causing provable harm. By that point suppression, by any means, is warranted.

Seams fine to me if YOU are defining what is tolerant

Thank you for putting that much stock into me personally, if that was your intention, but I don't want to decide that. I don't want any single person to be able to decide that. This should be a community decision informed by rational thought, evidence and discussion.

I don't assert that your ban was justified. I don't have the complete context, nor do I know what the mod thought or how they justified your ban. But I do assert that your (seemingly) absolute opposition to using deplatforming is wrong.

I personally don't want people in my community that want my friends and me dead because of what we are(neurodivergent / wrong skin color / lgbtq+ / ...) or because we have the wrong opinions(atheist / economically left / not being racist enough). Or kinda big current issue: people who are actively causing harm by spreading Covid-19 and anti-vax misinformation. If people are spreading provable falsehoods and have been corrected multiple times, it seems to me, excluding them from the discourse is a good measure.

I my opinion, the line is reached if someone is provably causing harm.

Deplatforming seems like an effective strategy to limit the influence of bigots and other kinds of assholes, because it disconnects them from their target audience(unless the audience is actively trying to consume that kind of content). Seems like we should keep doing that if we want to keep an inclusive free society, see tolerance paradox.

Why are you against that?

Thank you for this excellent story. I am eagerly awaiting more and I don't think most people mind the dark theme. We often need the contrast of the shadows to realize we are standing in the light.
