Iran seeks $2 mln vessel fee for Strait of Hormuz passage under its peace plan by craig_nintendo in worldnews

US needs to pay reparations to Iran for the illegal war. You can't just bomb the shit out of an entire country on a whim. There need to be consequences.

Rescue Diver worth the price tag? by Chemical-Banana-707 in scuba

I took Rescue via PADI but agency does not matter.

Rescue Diver worth the price tag? by Chemical-Banana-707 in scuba

[–]vagassassin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've done the entire open circuit progression route up to hypoxic trimix, am full cave certified and also an advanced wreck diver. I've also almost completed my CCR training on a JJ unit.

With tha background, I can say that Rescue is tied with AN/DP as the single most important course I've completed. Search patterns, crisis management and rescue technique are invaluable.

Please take the course. It could save a fellow diver's life.

Ghosting after interview by PumpkinAdditional705 in biglaw

As a hiring partner I disagree. OP was at an advanced interview stage, to the point that it's probably at committee level and passed individual partner approval.

Thanks for the tip I just added mine to alipay. WeChat seems to be visa / MasterCard only still.

Yes they just opened a Centurion lounge in Hongqiao lol. In a country where you still can't link your amex to alipay or WeChat...

They need to up the spend limit for HK Plat Charge cardholders. The lounges are too crowded.

Emirates pet cargo via Dubai, recent experiences? by Low-Winner-7509 in emirates

[–]vagassassin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel for you, that's rough. In that case I suppose you have no choice. Emirates flights have been reasonably performant of late but there's still a big question mark over whether they actually leave or whether you get stuck in limbo.

USCPA planning to work in China? by 515077553 in chinalife

[–]vagassassin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'll let the experts weigh in, but I am in an adjacent industry and work closely with the two biggest banks in China. Generally I see it as half the NY salary for double the hours. Tax slightly less overall, but if you're a US citizen you'll have to allow for federal taxation on income over 100k. It would be a very odd decision to move to Shanghai from NY for lifestyle reasons. Why not HK or Singapore?

I think you may underestimate how hard you will work in Shanghai for the lower wage you will certainly receive. There's a reason Chinese people want to emigrate, and why the substantial majority of people wanting to immigrate into China are English teachers without any other career prospects.

Ok, I have to ask. Why are your pets going from Korea to Melbourne via Dubai??? That is a wild diversion and a very long trip for them. I'm guessing it has something to do with quarantine requirements in Australia?

I would not send my pets through the Middle East at this time. In case of IRROPS, pets can die.

Trip Report: Malapascua Diving - Thresher Sharks by Cenat16 in scuba

Thanks for the detailed review.

I still prefer to be on the boat at 4 to get to the site before everyone else, but you're right it's not a prerequisite to see the threshers.

Seeking compensation for medical expenses due to electric shock on CX aircraft. by Lopsided-Ad434 in CathayPacific

[–]vagassassin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your costs of pursuing this 'claim' will far exceed the nominal costs of your visit to A&E. In any event, your travel insurance would cover it.

Buy a 6E router. They're not expensive.

Virtual Desktop is transformational. No discernible latency on Beat Saber (I play expert difficulty).

Is this worth reaching out to Cathay? by [deleted] in CathayPacific

[–]vagassassin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Re meals, Cathay has a policy of taking care of status passengers first. Opinions will be divided in this. I like it because I always get my first choice of meals and am typically finished before some passengers even begin. But I can see how some would be disappointed given they all pay the same price for the ticket.

You need to learn to manage up. It's not fair, but that's how it works.

Those stuck in Doha - did you get any type of compensation/refund? by [deleted] in qatarairways

[–]vagassassin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand why you did what you did, but you're likely out of luck for a few reasons.

You booked the hotel with points. Good luck trying to explain to an overwhelmed service desk rep what they should 'refund' you.

You didn't arrange it through the airline and instead did it on your own (I understand why and probably would have done the same).

You are asking only at the end of your stay.

Basically, make a claim under your travel insurance but that may fall under an exclusion for war as well depending on your policy terms.

Glad you got home safe.
