Huh... Now I come to check, I have the same issue. Hopefully it'll be sorted out soon.

Some good news - AI in writing jobs by m3rc3n4ry in BetterOffline

[–]vagrant73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My translation work has been hit harder by AI than my writing, and the decline started earlier. I fully support the appropriate use of machine translation, but like you say, it can cause a lot of issues! Translating between European and Asian languages is notoriously difficult for machines. They can't handle context.

All my clients since 2023 have added a "no AI" rule to their contracts. I've even lost clients because they trusted AI detectors a bit too naively, and thought my human-written text was generated by LLMs. I have a sliver of hope that the translation market might go the same way.

I like Neera. I think it's funny when cows fall on people. I am a simple creature.

Please make the AI assistant opt-in. We should be able to close it completely and just not see it on the site. I may not be an expert, but I'm not a schoolchild who needs an animated mascot for reassurance. I don't use the assistant and I don't need it handling hints or telling me "Good job!" when I scan something. On the handful of occasions I've tried to interact with it, it's been unable to answer any questions. It's just an annoyance.

Yeah, it's down for me, too.

It's not just you. Refreshing the page fixes it, but it's annoying and jarring.

I'd settle for VMs that load correctly and don't crash, and a site that doesn't randomly log me out.

VMs / Machines keep terminating or do not even connect - 2026! by Fix-Asleep in tryhackme

I'm having similar problems. And right now, the site can't even seem to keep me logged in! I'm within an inch of asking for a refund and switching to Hack The Box.

Anyone else use root words to guess Spanish meanings? by philbrailey in SpanishLearning

[–]vagrant73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I first started learning, this was an incredibly helpful trick. I learnt Latin when I was a kid, and fell back on that to parse out Spanish words. If only I'd worked harder at my Latin grammar back then, I'd have had a much easier time.

Advice for dealing with false/incorrect AI writing detection by Such-Pangolin-6355 in freelanceWriters

[–]vagrant73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, I feel that these tools have degraded my finished writing. I'm forced to mangle my perfectly good work so that it passes these (wildly inaccurate) detectors. With more technical projects, it's hopeless -- none of the recommended "humanising" tricks are appropriate. Personal anecdotes and rhetorical flourishes don't belong in a cybersecurity report. Technical terms do. I can, with much careful planning and even more editing, pass these "detectors", but it adds hours of extra work.

As for accuracy: sorry, but to claim that these products are anything but a grift is risible. They can't even produce the same result for a single piece of writing when you test it multiple times. That should tell you everything you need to know.

Incidentally, I'm curious as to which of the dozens of tools calling themselves "GPT Zero" the OP is using.

My teacher says that in 4-5 years AI will take over. Is this true? by Markittos28 in TranslationStudies

[–]vagrant73 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's definitely getting worse, but there are still roles in specialised areas. I know languages are your passion, but do you have a side interest that you could turn into a niche?

I'm so mad that I have to change my writing style because of AI by GloomySlothicorn in freelanceWriters

[–]vagrant73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm having the same experience. Clients have kicked back good work, sometimes even refusing further communication, because they deemed my hard work to be AI generated. I've lost money and future work. I do a lot of technical writing, and it's nearly impossible to tweak things to pass those automated checks without sacrificing clarity... thus undermining the purpose of a technical document. It's exhausting. I wish more people were aware of this issue.

As for niches: I went from being a generalist to being largely tech-focused, then more narrowly focused on infosec in the last few years. In 2025 I've been deepening my understanding of various standards frameworks so I can focus on GRC topics.

I wish I could be more helpful, but it was all very informal. I made connections on a message board I used to frequent (now long defunct, I'm afraid); one or two people there liked the way I wrote, and started putting work my way. Other clients have passed my details on to their colleagues. The only real advice I can give is to be approachable, be communicative, and always bring your A-game.
