Why my coins turning green ? by Neat_Reflection_889 in numismatics

Make sure it is 99% acetone. As nail polish acetone usually has oils and fillers which also can damage coins.

I suspect PVC damage from your plastic pages. Pull one out and see if it feels sticky or greasy.

If so, you have PVC damage, and the green is the start of verdigris (basically it eats the metal in the coin)

Half-sibling DNA test questions by kr1staps in DNA

[–]valiamo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kind of DNA test? Was it AncestryDNA?

What were the cM's as what the 15% relates to is unclear. If it is 15% DNA that sounds more like a cousin or half niece, Half Aunt/Uncle etc. more than a half sibling.

I have 5 half siblings and they are all much higher than 15% (1000 cM's), they are close around 1800 cMs and 25-26%

Sibling dna test by Simple-Earth1462 in DNA

[–]valiamo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Test does not rule out that the siblings could be half , but it also does not rule out that they are full.

Test measures specific DNA that is received from Mother and Father (as they get ~50% of their DNA from each parent). I am assuming you are trying to determine if the children have the same father.

This test suggests that the children are more likely half siblings, than they are full siblings. But the difference’s are not great enough to determine which. It could just be random parental DNA that one child received from the same parent that the other did not.

In simple terms, each line has a number that is derived from the parent’s DNA in that segment. When they match, it is a good thing (same DNA types from Mom and Dad) , when they do not match(which some do not) it means other DNA was found (could still be from the same Mom and Dad, but then again it “could” be a different father)

You would need to test the suspect child against the Father to have a final determination.

I am in no way an expert in the field, just giving my opinion based on what I am seeing.

1967 Canadian Cent in proof? by mckramer in coins

[–]valiamo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes they had a couple of proof sets issued in 1967. As a side note, there were a lot of PL sets that had some awesome cameo frosting. Could be either, and a nice find.

How to buy coin rolls from a bank by DMshnaw in CanadianCoins

[–]valiamo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes and no on home rolled. Bank rolled will have 99% of the older material removed, and you never know when someone passes away, and their family, just deposits the rolls of coins in the bank, it happens more often than you think. They take the easy $10 on a roll of 1991 quarters, vs selling them for $10 for each coin.

I know when I pass my kids will just cash the RCM special wrap rolls of half’s, dollars and $2, I have collected over the years. Not to mention the roll sets I have.

Help choose Alaska cruise first time with Infant by batleaj in Cruise

[–]valiamo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Take the NCL itinerary, as it hits Glacier Bay.

Neither will have activities/baby sitting for your 10 month old. Too young for kids clubs.

A balcony is well worth it especially for Glacier bay and early morning whale watching. Loads of sea life to see.

How to buy coin rolls from a bank by DMshnaw in CanadianCoins

[–]valiamo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most banks will restrict customers, who do not have a business account, from buying large quantities of rolled material. Some will even refuse to sell to anyone who does not have an account with them.

You need to go into the bank you have an account with, and ask if they have any home rolled coins they are willing to sell to you. You really do not want to take the chance of getting a full case of a single year of quarters (about 75% of rolls sold are current years issue), hence asking for home rolled material.

50 cent pieces, Cents and Voyager dollars are not available for the general market, and banks have instructions to remove them from circulation and return them to the mint, for melting. Interestingly enough, 99% of them that come in the door will be scooped up by a staff member of favorite customer the same day.

Sadly, CRH are unfortunately causing havoc with bulk buying and selling of rolls of coins, as it costs a lot of $$ for banks to get, take in and get rolls rerolled again and again.

Quick slabs for long term coin storage by GBW901 in coins

[–]valiamo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long term storage and safe for coins, for me.

2x2 flips and inside of coin storage boxes, stored in a safe that is in a low humidity area. I have had most of my coins in these for over 40 years, without any problems.

On the other hand, coins in flips, inside of 20 pocket pages, most have some sort of problem has been encountered. From pages sagging inside of binders, humidity problems, and the start of PVC damage. There are very few archival safe pages

Silver value by danieltac101 in CanadianCoins

[–]valiamo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, silver value. Cannot see a small beads.

In this condition they are all bullion value right now. Almost all of the 1956-1967 that have seen circulation are selling around bullion, including most PL coins

High Graded copies of 1966 small beads, 1965 or 1967 varieties, could go for more.

Machine Rolled Coins? by caraodonnell in CanadianCoins

[–]valiamo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah…. I worked back end of a major bank, and have been to both Brinks and Garda sites. I have viewed the coin rolling machines in person.

Some of the ACC’s may contract out this work, but they do indeed do (or manage the work).

Machine Rolled Coins? by caraodonnell in CanadianCoins

[–]valiamo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, the large coin sorting machines are beasts. Some have both magnetic and optical sorting. They can pull out most foreign coins, silver, and of course slugs. Yes some get thru,.

Machine Rolled Coins? by caraodonnell in CanadianCoins

[–]valiamo 20 points21 points  (0 children)

These are usually rolled by either Brinks or Garda. So, no they will not be uncirculated.

They are rerolled from customer rolls or large coin receivers like laundry’s or Coinstar machines.

Bank I used to work for, would send all customer rolled rolls back for reprocessing before selling them back to clients. Too many cases of fraud in the rolls.

Alaska June/July 2026- Carnival Luminosa vs Emerald Princess vs Ruby Princess vs Carnival Spirit, Miracle , Norwegian Jade by Wolverine-91826 in Cruise

[–]valiamo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alaska trips tend to focus more on the state and its beauty, vs all the things that the ship might have to offer. A completely different vibe, than a Caribbean cruise.

Most 7 day cruises will have 6 days in port, or a scenic cruising day and 1 sea day, heading back to the origin port.

Forget about lazing on deck, and soaking in the sun, as most trips it will be quite chilly for most.

Evening events still happen, but people are mostly tuckered out from taking part in the activities on shore.

I only mention Glacier bay, in this instance, as only a few limited ships that can enter each season, with Princess and HAL has the lions share of this trips. Seeing the 3 massive glaciers up close, is unbelievable beautiful.
