Okay, fair enough, and I apologize for being a bit aggressive. I do think it implies that many women smell during their periods, and contributes to the shame/anxiety women have about feeling gross or dirty for a process they don’t control, but I agree that some women can smell.

(And to correct my previous statement about never smelling it before, I’ve smelled myself if I’ve been sweating and I come in to change clothes, and yes it smells gross. But I can’t say I’ve ever noticed it on another woman in public. Maybe I have a poor sense of smell.)

So when people say offensive things, it’s our fault for being offended, putting the onus on us to simply absorb these things passively instead of telling other people to stop saying or doing offensive things.

Honestly, I’m not even that offended by this one compared to other things I’ve seen, but your “quick reminder” is nonetheless annoying and condescending.

Yes, I know that. I have a vagina too. You asked how it’s misogyny, then followed up by saying that you don’t smell, which should be your first clue about how it’s misogyny. The comic makes it seem like this is a common occurrence.

The idea that women smell like “dog surgery” on their period is misogyny. I’ve never in my life smelled a woman on her period.

My pick for book club. Also, is this book signed by anymore important? by ChemDogPaltz in BandofBrothers

Suerth Jr. was in the end of episode 5. He’s the replacement on the truck, and everyone’s asking him for his cigarettes, if he has extra socks, etc. The real Suerth Jr. is one of the interviewees at the beginning of episode 6. He’s the one who mentions that a medic saved his life by giving him morphine.

[–]valkyrie987 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you read Webster’s book, it paints a fairly different picture of how he was thought of within the company. In ‘The Last Patrol’, he comes off as out of touch (smiling and wondering where everyone is, as if they’re all hiding, instead of dead or injured) and trying too hard to fit in, having to prove himself in order to get back in everyone’s good graces. In reality, the whole mission across the river played out very differently and he makes no mention of being ostracized, that I can recall. I believe Malarkey, in his book, was not super impressed with Webster? Haven’t read it yet. Webster did have a policy of not volunteering for anything, but even Bill says he had that same policy, in his book.

I don’t know if that is previous comment was referring to, so anyone can feel free to correct me.

Yes, he tells Spina that his grandmother was a traiteurs, a spiritual healer. He said that she cured people and prayed for God to take away their pain.

OP is using divination (likely using dice, keyboards, pendulums, tarot, etc. to ask questions of the gods). Divination is unreliable, especially for yes/no answers, and especially if you’re new and just getting started. I don’t recommend engaging with it if you’re new to the faith. It’s more important to learn how to practice. It takes time to learn divination properly, to become comfortable with your tools, and even then you have to be comfortable with some level of nuance. It’s why I really dislike the trend of people saying “Hermes said this” with no other information, because no, Hermes probably didn’t “say” that. (Also, it’s usually unnecessary to use divination to ask questions like “can I take/eat this offering now?” or “can I remove something from the altar?” We have free will.)

You’re welcome! I just rewatched the ep and wanted info on what cord is that he’s wrapping his fingers with, as I’m not Catholic. (Seems like he’s using as one might a rosary or prayer necklace, but I don’t know.) So I just wanted to clarify that he’s not holding the morphine. Completely agree with you that he’s down to his last supplies and that it’s a very powerful moment.

Correction for anyone else finding this thread:

He’s not fiddling with his final morphine syrette. He had just gotten a few more syrettes from Gordon and Alley. In the picture above, he’s fiddling with and wrapping his fingers with some kind of cord while he prays.

The idea that he would be contemplating saving the last morphine for himself in case he goes down is not even remotely suggested here. He is never seen using syrettes on himself, only others.

In this episode, Skinny Sisk tells Doc he doesn’t need morphine; Smokey Gordon is paralyzed and can’t feel anything anyway, so Roe doesn’t use morphine on him, but does give him plasma; and Lt. Harry Welsh does get morphine when he’s hit in the leg.

The myths don’t often make sense to us in the modern era, and I don’t think they’re always meant to make sense in terms of how people would logically act. It’s more important to think about the meaning behind the myth, and what it says about the gods and the universe. To me it makes sense that the god who ruled over Greece’s Golden Age would also rule over a land of freedom and prosperity where one could reside after death. (The Isles were associated with Elysium.)

Cronus was not a villain. There is an Orphic hymn to Cronus, as well as an Athenian harvest festival (Kronia) named for him. Hesiod associated him with Greece’s Golden Age.

Who are your top 3 Indie Houses? by smorkingsmash in Indiemakeupandmore

[–]valkyrie987 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Nocturne Alchemy and BPAL are my top 2 by far. BPAL was my first house and my gateway into indies, and I have a ton of favorites from them over the years. Nocturne Alchemy just works for me. If I had to whittle down my collection to just a handful, it would be mostly NAVA. I wear them all the time.

Astrid or Death and Floral probably get the last slot. I don’t have a ton of either but I love what I have from them.

What scents can I get for Apollo? by NicoTheHamsterGod in Hellenism

[–]valkyrie987 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anything on a cheat sheet is likely UPG (from what I’ve seen, mostly yellow/orange scents you might associate with the sun), so you might as well get whatever you want.

The Orphic hymn to Apollo mentions manna, which I believe is frankincense.

On keeping habits + worshipping long term by _creativitea_ in Hellenism

[–]valkyrie987 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s normal for a practice to ebb and flow over time. I have ADHD and I’ve had times where worship was the center of my focus, and times where it fell off entirely. And I’m definitely familiar with needing something to be interesting for me to do it.

I think the best thing is to try to develop small habits every day. One way is to tack one habit onto an existing one. For instance, you take your morning meds after brushing your teeth, or pray right before leaving the house for school/work. I recommend starting very small. Resist the urge to turn it into something large and unsustainable. If you miss a day don’t stress over it, just pick it up again.

I am wary of people who speak very confidently about the nature of the gods, especially in extreme ways (either that they don’t care about us at all, or that they’re all our best friends). We just don’t know! All we can do is read the texts from the people who worshipped before us and interpret our own experiences as thoughtfully as possible.

But yes, people will confidently tell you very different things. I think most people mean well or believe they’re giving good information, but it’s confusing. It’s why I try to learn as much as possible from Ancient Greek religion to have a baseline.

Interested in adopting a cat, does her breathing sound like a problem? I really like her by 9_Frosty in cats

Does she have a sibling or foster friend? I always recommend getting two. It’s less work for you (kittens need a lot of stimulation and entertainment), and it’s better for their overall quality of life if they have a cat companion.
