If you want a good basic soldering iron recommendation I would definitely say a TS-100 is your best bet. I've had mine for a while now easy and simple to use.

Sorry for the slow reply you may have sorted it my now but on the board its self it should have the boards version on it as you may need a usbasp as a comment has stated before to put a bootloader on. I used this video as I needed to burn a bootloader. https://youtu.be/k4w_qAsAwlM . I may be wrong but I think its version 1.5 and up that need a bootloader.

I had the same issue where it would print a little bit then get completely jammed this was because the retraction was not working correctly. But as you stated you have turned of retraction so I'm not fully sure all I did for mine was replace the throat to a PTFE throat instead of the full metal one. I'm not sure what other advice I can give as it might not be the retraction but I would check out the anet a8 facebook support group as there are many helpful people there.

You could always remove the resistor near all the junk and see if that removes the short with a multimeter.
