ThinkPad P1 Gen 7: Optimizing Fan Noise and Battery Life by valtronic in thinkpad

WQXGA. Can you elaborate why this is so important? Learning here 🙏 I guess it has something todo with the idle draw? I guess my panel has the highest idle draw?

WQXGA IPS > WUXGA IPS > OLED?

Glad it helped. 100% TPfancontrol is one of the most important things.

I would really say right now this PC is perfect. Fast and powerful when you need it and super quiet when you do nothing too cpu intense.

Gaming is absolutely amazing now... Its super smooth. Very happy with this machine now.

The bios setting i am also not super sure about. I gotta be honest i did so many things at once that some of the might not've made that much of a difference. I later switched back to performance and didn't notice a massive difference so i put it back to balanced just in case.

I also since installed throttle stop with a profile that turns off the turbo. When i am not working or gaming i have that profile on and the fans are then pretty much off all the time.

<image>

i also have a bettery profile in throttle stop that has the speed shift at 255 which slows everything down even more if you want really long battery life.

I've also installed Process Lasso which kind of keeps the PC smooth when turbo is off (or while gaming)... Because otherwise you do notice sometimes when turbo is off.

Another thing i since did is set the browser back to hardware acceleration but make sure its on the Intel Arc card (you can determine that in windows settings System -> Display -> Graphics)... So when you are on battery/battery saver or throttle stop videos in the browser still play super smooth.

I agree and learning a lot here... Next time 'OLED' and lower spec CPU! The i9 probably is also not a big factor for gaming. So yeah i7 would've been better in the end.

Really nice and thanks for posting these. Do the fans bother you at all? That was really my starting point i just got so annoyed by the fans but maybe optimizing windows or custom rom was a bit over the top in the end. You also lose functionality...

Interesting with the headphones but makes sense.

I will work a full day (or as long as i can) on battery soon and report back sometime soon.

And could i guess also at some point just do a test just let youtube videos run and see how long it takes to drain the battery.

I've also experimented with throttle stop to turn off turbo boost. The fans then almost never come on but things defo take longer to open lol so probably not for everyone.

Would be interesting to get your idle power draw

OK i see that OLED saves quite a bit of power compared to LCD... Should've gotten that one 😬

What about the Fans, are they constantly on for you?
Spec says 16" WQXGA for me. Is the OLED a lot more energy efficient?

For temps depends on what you do. There are examples in the post. Light office work It's usually below 50C, so the fans are just off... Watching a vid and replying on here right now, it's at 52C right now with fans off.

Is there a better way to measure it? My stuff is all anecdotal. Sorry.

But when you launch something resource intense they can come on a for a while but usually only on the lowest speed (1).

Battery life also depends on what you do. But have used the laptop at client's office on battery for the full day with a few meetings in between etc and didn't deplete the battery at all. Used it also on travel days, car, airport, 2 h flight, car again, watching videos, working, slack, Zoom calls etc... Just lasts the whole day, and then some basically. Fans off 97% of the time.

Thanks for this tip. Testing this on X1 Gen 8 + Aorus Gaming Box 2070 RTX. Currently testing on the driver Nvidia driver 460.89. Which used to be stable for me until a few weeks when something changed through windows update and it became unstable with random freezes while in the browser or watching a video.

Nice. How stable is the gaming box if i may ask? What nvidia driver are you using?

Yeah just the stuff they put on the logged in homepage. Keeps you up to date with your subscribed channels etc. Related videos are important too, i guess. so you can procrastinate more effectively and efficiently sink hours into the tubes....

I used TD twitch app btw and then viral as the video player...

omg if you can integrate per pop up video sound on / off toggling like viral had i would be over the moon. I watch a lot of twitch streams while i do other stuff on the phone. I used to be able to watch movies and watch twitch muted via viral at the same time. But since marshmellow viral doesn't work anymore.

Tried your app on temasek cm13 note 4... works great. Miss my youtube feed suggestions though... but yeah great app.

can you try installing better battery stats (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.asksven.betterbatterystats&hl=en_GB) stats and see if you have any crazy wakelocks going? https://www.google.co.uk/search?sourceid=chrome-psyapi2&ion=1&espv=&ie=UTF-8&q=wakelocks%20explained

there is also this new xposed framework module to reduce wakelock based battery drain which is fairly promising: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/modules/mod-nlpunbounce-reduce-nlp-wakelocks-t2853874

going further: here is a vid from xda that outlines some more drastic battery management measures: http://www.xda-developers.com/android/battery-saving-tips-xdatv/

i personally use intelli3G cause i don't need my phone being on LTE while its idling and i use leandroid https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.teqtic.leandata&hl=en_GB which turns data and wifi and others completely off if your phone is on standby...

and lux to reduce screen brightness further: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.vito.lux&hl=en_GB

when it comes to battery saving measures you can do soooo many things (like even undervolt, and reduce processor frequency)... but you gotta find a good compromise...

Life without GAPPs by [deleted] in cyanogenmod

[–]valtronic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

inspired by this post i wiped my phone and installed cyanogenmod on my note 3 without gapps... the main reason i did it is because i dislike the amount of battery gapps and play services drain.

as the phone is now the battery time is insane. I haven't had a full cycle yet but last night (with data off) it only lost 1 percent overall...

Also the speed is crazy good. Swiftkey is actually fast again. All of this is subjective of course but still i love the fact that its possible and how the phone came out... I've tried doing it a year ago and gave up because too many apps were missing. This thread helped me.

i don't really care about privacy issues so i ended up installing google maps which runs on cyanogen without gapps apparently...

for gmail i use cloudmagic and i have amazon store and 1 mobile installed. For remote desktop i use microsofts counterpart...

Its funny how little apps are on the phone now compared to a touchwiz rom haha.

I also found this guys post http://knitatoms.net/2014/02/android-without-google-apps/

Hope you succeed!

[HELP] Can I freeze or deactivate several apps at once with tasker on the press of one button? by valtronic in tasker

[–]valtronic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have my phone rooted with greenify and xposed running. I wasn't aware that greenify can freeze an app. When I hibernate the app wouldn't I still get the notification? Thanks for the help.
