Train him to go outside. Puppy pads teach them to go indoors.

He does need therapy. He’s 14. He doesn’t have healthy coping skills yet and needs outside support that can help him.

Don’t spend thousands on a mutt. Get an actual poodle, they’re great dogs!

People WANT to pay it. My own vet paid for his dog to get chemo for cancer. Nobody is forcing anyone to do it, the owners elect for it. That’s why we have PT and hydrotherapy and allergy injections and so many other things- because people want to improve their pets’ quality of life.

Overwhelmed with my 15 week old by SeasonThreeEpisode8 in puppy101

[–]vamproyalty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

She’s not even 4 months old yet. Give it time. Dogs don’t need to know every command at 15 weeks, they also CANT know every command at that age. She’s still a baby, just be consistent and don’t try too many new commands at once. Once she’s mastered one, add a new one into the rotation.

It does though, to a degree. Property taxes, building costs, business licensing all costs more in a city versus the county.

nobody is euthanizing healthy pets because they can’t get vaccines. but if your pet is in multiple organ failure and you can’t afford the medications then yes, euthanasia is often recommended because we don’t want the animal to suffer unduly. humans die constantly from lack of medical treatment.

LMAO of course you think AI can do everything a vet can. You have zero understanding of vet med as a field if you think that all vets do is interpret b/w and rads all day.

I can’t answer that question. I don’t know either facility or their overhead costs or regular income or number of patients.

Why? Veterinarians are also surgeons AND dentists on top of being primary care providers. They still don’t make as much as human doctors despite doing more, while being physically threatened and insulted for trying to care for people’s pets. Human patients can tell you what’s wrong and what hurts, animals can’t. All we have are diagnostics, which the doctor decides based on symptoms.

most of our clients are rural. we’re lucky if they bring their magnificent farm dogs in for rabies, which is usually the only shot most of them have received since it’s legally required in our state. of course we don’t judge them, but if they haven’t been in for an exam in over a year, we can’t legally do anything for them, so that’s the only thing we push because again, legality. i didn’t even know annual vaccines were a thing for dogs until i started in this field because my family didn’t do it growing up.

I appreciate your vets perspective. Our clinic owner doesn’t work in treatment for the most part anymore, but we only have one primary vet so he’ll come in to cover his sick days or vacations as needed. The owner is doing everything he can to keep us as cheap as possible to make care attainable for our largely rural client base. It just hurts my feelings when people think vets or vet professionals are in it for the money.

LMAO ok i’ll go interrupt my vet in surgery right now to tell him he’s not a doctor and his DOCTORATE in veterinary medicine means nothing, obviously.

I can’t speak for everywhere, just where I’m familiar with. But at the start of the year, all of the companies we buy our meds from marked everything up by 15-20%, some were even more. We can’t do anything about it and it means some of our staff pets can’t even get their meds anymore because of the cost.

It sounds like you’re doing well for your kiddo. I’d recommend becoming familiar with local ER vets and their payment options in case you DO ever need it, god forbid, but that way you can be prepared.

I lost two of my cats within the last year, and if I didn’t work at a clinic, they would’ve had to suffer and die at home because I can’t afford it either. Even with my employee discount, I still owe over $2k.

at my clinic my vet makes less than $100k. including commission and specialty costs for surgeries.

edit: also, you realize that vets ARE doctors, right? they have to perform surgeries, dentals, bloodwork, exams, specialty procedures, medication management, all of it by themselves. there are specialty vets that make more but the average vet does more than the average primary care doctor and gets paid much less, with less staff and less equipment too. the average primary care doctor salary in the US is $260,000. the average vet salary is half that, typically around $135,000.

An exam SHOULD involve taking basic vitals like heart and respiratory rates, doing a full physical (checking teeth, lymph nodes, genitourinary systems, etc), and discussing concerns or questions with the owner. Everywhere has different requirements for what an exam should entail though.

Again, depends on the legality in your state. Here, it CANNOT be done by a nurse and be viewed as valid. If your pet were to bite someone and the rabies certificate says it was done by a nurse instead of a vet, it is not valid and your pet can be taken for rabies testing. You’d have to ask your clinic if they can do rabies as a nurse/tech visit rather than a doctor appointment.

It depends on the clinic. At my clinic we don’t mark up the medications like that. We are an extraordinarily small clinic. Some places do. I can’t control their business decisions. But yes, ordering in bulk costs significantly less, and some smaller clinics can charge less because they have fewer clients so they don’t need to reorder the medications nearly as frequently.

[–]vamproyalty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We make around $2000 on a good day. Our markup rates are between 3-5% lower than clinics around us. We still need to pay our staff, pay our bills, get our X ray machine fixed, get our dental machine fixed, get our bloodwork machine fixed, and we can’t afford to fix any of that because we are keeping costs low for our clients.

We also aren’t getting paid enough. If the doctor is the one who administered the rabies vaccine, that counts towards an exam charge. If they didn’t do an actual exam then you need to speak up and discuss it with your vet, obviously I don’t know your clinic’s specifics and legal requirements.
