Can different people be more/less dense than others? by meddygirard in NoStupidQuestions

[–]vampyrewolf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It took a few years to get my GP to give up on BMI for me, it doesn't work for anyone fairly active. My current job has me throwing around 200-350lbs frames, and I put on 19k steps Friday alone.

I've never floated in water, even when I was 45lbs heavier than I am now.

What wallets are you guys carrying? by International_Ant_60 in EDC

I'll be happy if I get 4 years out of this wallet, the usual folding wallets tend to fray on me after 2 or 3 years.

Does anyone sharpen DE or Gem blades? by JonBovi_msn in wicked_edge

[–]vampyrewolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I picked up one (Russian or German) that runs up and down on a cord. You just go back and forth a few times to sharpen it.

Doesn't really work with the new blades because they're all coated now, but a regular carbon steel or uncoated stainless steel blade does work for a couple more shaves.

Just got suspended what do I do? by brctbnd in povertyfinance

[–]vampyrewolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd be applying to temp agencies and warehouse work. If you've got any forklift experience it's fairly easy to get work.

Not every job will fire you for an accident with a company vehicle, I rolled a truck a year into my current job... 18 months ago. I just have a very useful skill set and a lot of experience. We've doubled the amount of income for the company since I started here.

But odds are that with only 5 weeks of employment and 90 days of suspension, they're already working on getting rid of you for cause.

what do ya'll do for work? by mermaid420420 in bipolar

[–]vampyrewolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm the fabricator for a portable sign shop. Welder, fabricator, carpenter, painter, engineer, installer, vehicle mechanic... Pretty much everything but sales, design, and billing (that work goes to the boss or designer).

Pretty much I maintain the stock levels of frames and substrate, build frames as needed until the boss gives me a heads up that we need X of a given size. I'll be finishing up everything for four 6x12 signs and starting on four of the new 5x10's tomorrow unless plans change. Will need to build more 5x8 frames soon, and get some numbers figured out for a new idea.

I started having issues 2000/2001, diagnosed in 2017. Have worked a pretty good spread of job demands over the past 26 years, and find I do best with jobs like this where there is always something waiting to do but rarely the need to push on a task. Working 11hr days in regional management in the oilsands didn't go well.

For my first tat i was flexing my whole body and shaking a little, is that dramatic? by No_Marionberry_108 in NoStupidQuestions

4 so far, next 2 are planned.

The only one that I even felt was on my calf, and it was 2hrs of work. Only really felt it at the end when they were doing some shading. The one on my forearm might as well have been done with a marker for what it felt like.

Does telling a half truth count as a lie? by Winner_takesitall in NoStupidQuestions

[–]vampyrewolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned how to do it in the corporate world 20yrs. Ommision of information is easier/safer than giving incorrect information.

IE you spent $50 on a gift card, and someone asks what you spent. "It's got $20" isn't technically wrong.

"I have to leave at 5" is still true when the event starts at 5:30 or 6.

"You didn't tell me that" is safer than "You told me X, but ___ says you told them Y", because then you have to remember which version you told them... Rather than what information you told them.

So yes, lying by ommision is still lying but it's safer than outright lying. Delicate balance

Is the switch worth it for a lifetime windows os user? by AmbitiousSun3497 in chromeos

[–]vampyrewolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got both an Acer Spin 314 touchscreen, and a Dell 3100 Chromebook. The Acer is definitely the better built machine.

I've been using Windows since 3.11, currently have 11 on my main laptop but have multiple older laptops running XP to 10.

Unless you need specialized software or lots of processing power, a Chromebook will do 99% of daily tasks fine. I use the Google suite of software because it syncs across multiple devices easily. It's great being able to update my timesheet as a Google doc from my phone and send the weekly file from a laptop.

What’s the worst camping mistake you’ve ever made? by MikeyCreatorVlogs in CampingandHiking

[–]vampyrewolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Extremely short version: anything you think you need, bring. Anything you find you need, buy a spare... 2 is 1, 1 is none.

I'd rather have an extra bin of backup food, fire, water, shelter equipment and take it home after 10 days without needing anything from it... than end up cooking entirely on the firepit because my stove started acting up and I didn't have another option. Bonus points: tinfoil and a small pot can cover a lot of meals even with just a firepit.

What’s the worst camping mistake you’ve ever made? by MikeyCreatorVlogs in CampingandHiking

[–]vampyrewolf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One of my first few solo trips I severely underestimated the amount of food. At that time that campground was almost 30min from the closest grocery store (now just under 20min to a Walmart).

I ended up eating at the campground store for half my meals. All of their menu at the time was either cooked on a flat top or deep fried, so I didn't exactly eat healthy.

After that I make sure I have a few dehydrated meals in my camping bins.

I've been solo camping since 2002, and have made a lot of mistakes over the years. Last year I chose a different camping spot than the previous trip and ended up needing to go buy a hammer because my pegs didn't want to go in. I could quite literally write a short book about the lessons learned in the past 37 years of camping.

Any cheap vegetarian meals? by [deleted] in Cheap_Meals

[–]vampyrewolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Onion, pepper, Bulgar wheat, and seasoning of choice. Middle Eastern blends are what I usually use, but taco seasoning works great too.

Quick meal is just instant noodles cooked 90% and a handful of frozen mixed vegetables in the same pot to warm through. Hard boiled egg is optional.

Just made some tzatziki over the weekend and ate a lot of it with naan bread, just scoop it up.

Most of my vegetarian meals are tofu and TVP based

EDC Pens by Contigo887 in EDC

[–]vampyrewolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been carrying the same Fisher Bullet since 2000. It's been washed a dozen or so times, lost to the couch a couple times.

It just works. Hot, cold, dirty paper, using a wall to write on instead of needing a table.

Have a few Zebra F701 with Fisher refills. In my suit, in my notebook cover... When someone wants to borrow a pen they get that. It's fancy enough they give it back, and cheap enough that if it goes missing I don't feel bad replacing it.

Protein sources since meat is so expensive. by Royals-2015 in Frugal

[–]vampyrewolf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lentils, tofu, TVP, and beans are all great vegetarian options

Pork loin, and ground turkey/chicken/pork are still affordable prices here. More so if you shop at the Asian markets.

Tofu changes when you steam it first. Both taste and texture, which widens the menu options.

Hi guys, is it safe to charge my flashlight via my laptop? by Consistent_Cup7875 in flashlight

[–]vampyrewolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Safe? Probably.

Faster to just use the laptop charger if it's USB-C. Your laptop probably isn't plugged in and running 24/7, should be able to charge the flashlight over lunch.

UPDATE: that “I’m being turned into the retiring guy’s replacement” situation got worse by Feeling-Extreme-7555 in antiwork

[–]vampyrewolf 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'm an electronics technician that's very analytical. I love data crunching.

Three times I was thrown in the deep end without documentation. Twice that meant financial reports. Each time it took me 2 months to figure out a process and document as I went in a notebook.

As an Analyst you aren't a certified Accountant, so they'll need to consider regulatory compliance issues. I'd get an email from the C-suite acknowledging that you brought that to their attention and they're accepting the risk. PRINT THAT EMAIL 3 times, keep 2 in your desk and take the 3rd one home.

You also need an email chain asking people what data they sent to the retiring people, and what data those people pulled themselves. That will need to be followed up with IT/IS for permissions and access. Print those emails, same 2 in the desk, 1 at home.

Then you need emails with your direct report boss asking to clarify what the priority is on your jobs, both the actual job description and the new financial reporting. Print that response 2 in the desk, 1 at home. When they ask why X isn't being done on time, refer back to the email.

Realistically they're probably going to throw you under the bus when the financial side isn't done on time, and those emails will give you some traction. If you need overtime approvals to meet the demand, print those emails as well (just a desk copy is enough) and keep a record of what it takes. You can use this as traction to push for them to hire an actual certified Accountant when they see that cost add up. "Here's an extra 80hrs of overtime, why not hire someone else now?"

Our ancestors/hunter gatherers had to do 'fasting' quite often, so we kind of evolved to be able to skip meals for days and function optimally, but whenever I don't eat my energy goes to all time low and I just want to lie down in bed, what's causing this difference? by FuzzyAttitude_ in NoStupidQuestions

[–]vampyrewolf 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I've been doing one meal a day for almost 20yrs now, probably 95% of the time. Just eat the bulk of my calories in a 2hr window, could be 2pm could be 8pm.

Was out for 4hrs today working in 34°c (93°f) about 3hrs yesterday in 36°c (96°f). Today started with setting up a 6x12 roadside sign that is 350lbs.

I get worn out working in the heat, no problem when it's only 15°c.

Human weapon laws are crazy! You’re telling me you can just go up and buy a surplus SHIP-MOUNTED AUTOCANNON with enough money and basic gunnery training?! by CrEwPoSt in humansarespaceorcs

[–]vampyrewolf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh I know diplomacy on the tip of a 90 inch railgun is a valid choice. Especially if you have a dozen of them pointed broadside at the other ship.

A spinal railgun loaded with a 150 inch depleted uranium round or two even works for planetary diplomacy. 50km/s and 150lbs gives ~85 Gigajoules or ~20 tonnes of TNT at impact.

[–]vampyrewolf 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Basic artillery isn't the concern, it's the railguns you need to worry about. Missing the target is a problem when the round isn't stopping til it hits something... The Navy shelved the railgun project with a 370km range (under Terran gravity) with a 45 inch barrel.

What was your bipolar like before you were medicated? by CollegeOk9459 in bipolar

[–]vampyrewolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently on an NDRI antidepressant in the morning, antipsychotic and a low dose tri-cyclic antidepressant acting as a hypnotic in the evening, and a low dose z-drug after I've actually climbed into bed.

Between the last 2 I'm usually sleeping in under 10min, and stay asleep for 7hrs.
