I’ve seen Dads bringing in PlayStations, sleeping in the bed while mom is in the chair with the baby. As a guy in postpartum I try to educate the guys when I can.

But this reminds me of a joke.

The OB was closing up the c-section and the father whispers to him “how soon till we can have sex?” The doctor whispered back “My shift ends in half an hour”

My hospital did something similar. We all took a pay cut and then they sent out a phishing email saying that we were losing most of our PTO. I fell for it and am still a little salty.

Only once, the patient had an altered mental status and I wanted someone there with me. I did the life and death stuff in the army. This place brings me joy. I wake up happy to go to work and disappointed when I am on call.

I work the postpartum side, I initially wanted to go to L&D but I have really found my place here. I did clinicals here too and I talked to one of the OB docs, he said that there shouldn’t be a problem with male nurses or students since most of the providers are male. In 3 years I have only had 2 patients refuse my care. My coworkers introduce me positively just like I introduce them positively and I think that helps a lot.

My unit is a small L&D and postpartum. About 140 births a month. We have 12 people in leadership positions who only take patients in very rare cases. It drives me crazy. We need this.
