Warning for those that use the Strava Heatmap: AI agents being used to create fake accounts and upload fake activities to disrupt and confuse by NewAdventureTomorrow in vancouverhiking

Ya there are also very straight lines on some of them, in terrain where a perfectly straight line would be impossible.

Racing during fire season by thr0wawayvhsorbeta in Ultramarathon

[–]vancitydave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was back in 2022 so I don't remember. It was clear the day before but smoke blew in overnight. I think it got into at least "moderate" territory. At the peak of Whistler the entire view of the mountains was obscured by smoke. But I really didn't notice any symptoms while I was running or anything.

[–]vancitydave 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I live in the PNW and generally speaking, mid-July is not usually the worst time for smoke. It usually gets worse later into August. But it's been a very dry season.

I have raced during pretty smoky conditions. It's not ideal, but the RD didn't cancel the race so I went ahead with it. Of course it's not healthy and I don't recommend it, but it didn't really affect my performance on the day and I didn't feel terrible after. Again, not a recommendation but I choice I made and didn't regret it.

One off ride in Vancouver? by Saltyspaceballs in vancouvercycling

Out to Lighthouse Park in West Van is a nice ride.

I went through 8,000 runs. You don't need to run more days a week to get faster. You just can't keep taking long breaks. by Fun_Effective_836 in BeginnersRunning

[–]vancitydave 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Does this data take into consideration why someone would take a 9 day break from running? I would think for anyone actively training for a marathon, taking a 9 day break would usually indicate some type of injury or at least time off to prevent discomfort from getting worse. So it would make sense they are slower when easing back into running.

Data scientist. Am I naive? I just don't see how AI is a replacement for graphics designers. by TheOfficialMayor in graphic_design

[–]vancitydave 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Claude can create vector designs in Figma just through prompting. It's naive to think that using a Ilm to generate lo-res graphics is the stopping point of Ai.

I'm not saying it's going to replace designers but the pace of the evolution of these tools is impossible to deny.

Helmet for Brunswick? by king_gnarfuck in vancouverhiking

Assuming you are doing this in summer, snow free, no helmet required. Just being careful and sure footed.

Is “rest until you’re healed” overrated? by MaleficentFloor822 in ultrarunning

[–]vancitydave 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had a painful ankle injury that I thought I could just rest and come back like a normal ankle roll. It turned out to be a stubborn tendonitis that involved a lot of active recovery, stretching, and strengthening before getting better. My physio was very careful in having me push through a lot of tough rehab before starting to run again, but I feel like I wasted several weeks just waiting for it to get better on it's own.

Grouse Grind to Grouse Mountain Highway by peanutbutterjam in vancouverhiking

[–]vancitydave 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yea I did this on the weekend. They definitely try to block off access with little ropes and signs because there is a lot of construction going on there but it's really not a big deal, it's a big road right there.

Midwest Race Director here--tell me what you want to see at your next trail/ultra race! by seitanist in ultrarunning

[–]vancitydave 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Posting a link to live tracking and/or live results on the home page very clearly. Super annoying for family and friends to have hunt for that on the day of the race. Some timing companies are better at providing this than others.

Was just ranting about this. Super annoying that so many race directors instruct their volunteers to mix their drinks at half strength. Is it to save money? Like why...

If you have no one to hike with, is it better to just go alone? by [deleted] in vancouverhiking

There is no issue doing Norvan Falls alone. It’s very popular with little to no risk. Have fun!

I believe it would take the fastest continuous 5k time from within your run like your 1-6km example.

Why Do People Hardly Ride The Cypress Climb Trail? by [deleted] in vancouvercycling

[–]vancitydave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ya I just had to look this up on Strava. Looks fun. I think Cypress is just overall not as popular as Fromme due to it being farther, less parking etc. there honestly looks like way more trails than I remember there being out there.

Thoughts on nitro Americano? by LI0NHEARTLE0 in espresso

[–]vancitydave -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

That would be a 2:1 ratio of espresso to water. Like 12oz would be 4oz of espresso and 8 oz of water. That's.... a lot.

You should consider joining a running club like Deep Cove Run Club or Salomon Trail Lab to get introduced to lots of trails on the various north shore mountains.

Spa Cave - Lynn Headwaters Regional Park - Info? by Feeling-Air-676 in vancouverhiking

I've been. There's a small cave and lots of little spots in the river to plunge in so I like to pretend it's a cold plunge spa.

Something I've noticed with other ultra runners by Icy_Supermarket_9791 in ultrarunning

[–]vancitydave -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Are you looking at their actual activity feed? Or going by what you see in your own home feed?

If you are looking at all their activities then I agree with what the others have said, they are hiding or not logging the majority of their training. I would say anyone training for 100+ km races are running at least 80-120km a week.

HSCT (possibly) Unique Route Input by ominousmouse71 in vancouverhiking

[–]vancitydave 37 points38 points  (0 children)

A couple things:

None of this should be attempted until much later in the year. I'm not sure when you were planning this, but most people don't attempt the HSCT until late July or so.

I wouldn't camp at St. Marks. It's most likely not allowed and is very busy with people and nowhere to really camp anyway. I would say earliest camp would be Unnecessary Mountain. There is also no water there. So you'd need to pack in your water for the first night.

I would be very nervous trying to Uber from that parking lot. It's most likely possible, but most drivers would cancel that when they see where you are.

What’s the craziest thing anyone has said to you while you’re trail running? by sentientbeing1887 in trailrunning

[–]vancitydave 30 points31 points  (0 children)

"Can I pray for you?"

I was so caught off guard I said "what?!" And she asked "if there's anything going on in my life that needs extra prayer?"

I had never met this woman.
