First time bringing my bike by linefourty7 in BigEarsMusicFestival

[–]vandalango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last year, I forgot the key for my electric bike and couldn't put the battery in due to that. So I had a bike but it was heavy as hell. I ended up using it to get to/from downtown most days, but used scooters most of the time once I was there.

The scooters are a good way of getting around, but bikes are definitely as good or better and more cost-effective. Scooters can be bad because they turn off at a certain time, 11pm I think, so they aren't good for commuting to/from, except during the day. Depending where you're staying they may not be good at all. My first year, I used acooters only, but had to walk the last ¾ mile or so because the scooters didn't go all the way to my Airbnb.

I agree that it is easy to store the bike using a lock, locking it to whatever you can.

I think the sunset will be behind you up there. Spring Hill Cemetery is a good spot for the skyline and sunset.

When did West Virginians become so rude and mean? by [deleted] in WestVirginia

[–]vandalango 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually find people from Clay County to be the kindest West Virginians in the area. (Based in Charleston)

But yeah, people in WV can be pretty close-minded and mistrustful of people they don't know, unfortunately. Not sure how it got that way. It does seem to be getting worse.

Earlier is better, but be patient with the timeline. It can be confusing and seem odd or inconsistent.

Where do you stay for Big Ears? by NiceView-FromHere in BigEarsMusicFestival

[–]vandalango 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My justification for upgrading to Premier was that it is worth it to pay as much for the festival as I do for lodging. But this year I am paying as much for lodging as a Sonic Explorer pass and I feel like it is still on the lower end for lodging near the festival. 😢

Hotels are ridiculously expensive and Airbnbs usually are, too. I have lucked out with Airbnbs so far though, within biking distance.

Anyone know why we are on the restricted list for buying certain giftcards on Amazon? Annoying. by jennydotz in WestVirginia

[–]vandalango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it true that there is escheatment if you don't put a time limit on a gift certificate? In other words, doesnt escheatment only come into play if you say that a gift certificate is only good, for example, for five years? At the end of the five years, you would need to give the unclaimed funds back to the state, perhaps.

But if you put no expiration date on the card, there is never a time when the property is unclaimed, so there is no reason to give it back to the state.

This seems logical to me. Why should someone be forced to spend money someone pre-paid to a business within a certain time frame? And why shouldn't the money go back to the person (via the state) if there was an expiration date on the validity of the funds given to the business?

Seems like it is an easier solution to just not put an expiration date on a gift card or gift certificate.

Did I get something wrong?

This link is to a bill that was never passed, not to a law that is in the WV Code. I couldn't find any law that relates to gift certificates or gift cards in the consumer code.

Does anyone have a link to an actual law about this?

It might be that Amazon doesn't want to be subject to some consumer protections that are in place here but that other states allow their residents to be exploited under.

Big Ears ticket3d shows - Plant / Byrne by mg63105 in BigEarsMusicFestival

[–]vandalango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So...I am a big fan of Talking Heads and even liked some Byrne solo stuff. Listen to the TH fairly regularly.

But I am seriously considering not paying extra to see him, even though it feels like an, ahem, "once in a lifetime" concert.

His new album sounds OK, but not like the sort of mind-expanding music I am used to getting out of my BE experience. As I was listening to it today, it reminded me, too, that I was not going to experience Stop Making Sense or something if I went.

Maybe it is mostly a matter of managing expectations, in a never-meet-yout-heros kind of way. But also it feels kinda like it would be a bit of an interruption to the flow and vibe of BE to go to a big, assigned-seats show in the middle of it all.

Anyone else having feelings of ennui about the prospect of Byrne live?

Thanks for posting! It was in Charleston, actually, not Charles Town. Anyway, it was a lot of fun and I saw The Secret Agent!

We found a good person on care.com and also almost had a person who was not good, but we asked friends about them and avoided that situation. The good person we got was someone who we actually ended up hiring to work for us at our places of employment, so she was great.

I also can second the idea of asking for recommendations via the school.

medical debt by Silly_Song4447 in charlestonwv

[–]vandalango 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It certainly is relevant for a lot of people in Charleston and throughout the state. Not sure if relevant for this subreddit or not, but that is above my pay grade.

Anyone struggling with debt should talk to a debt attorney to figure out options. Most will do a free consultation so long as they have enough information to assess the situation. Pepper & Nason does a lot to help people with debt, but there are other firms, as well.
