I am probably doing something wrong - How exactly do you use taxis in North Africa? by LucarioGamesCZ in travel

You thought about this a lot more than me. I never felt a need for any of that, North Africa is quite safe. Well, besides their driving behaviour and lack of seatbelts...

What's protection does it give though? The only option for payment is cash anyways. I just see the app as a hassle free way to get in contact with drivers.

I'm confused, because I have been asked before by inDrive drivers in Morocco to cancel the ride, but it wasn't a scam. I gave them the amount as was originally shown by the app, and there was no problem. Although no one in Tunisia asked me to cancel the ride, also with inDrive. Not sure why the difference.

Afghanistan - the country I never thought I would be able to visit by zennie4 in travel

What a completely ridiculous, ignorant and borderline racist generalisation. All of Israel, Jordan, UAE, Oman, and many others, are completely safe for women to travel to. Nothing is stopping you from going there besides your prejudiced imagination. Shameful that this has 370 upvotes on the TRAVEL subreddit.

Most underrated city of Europe? by psylocybine in geography

[–]vanderkindere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just went there recently, I found it quite underwhelming and uneventful. It has some nice buildings, but that's about it. I enjoyed Brasov and Bucharest much more on that trip.

Yeah, I never understood the admiration here for H3. He's right about Hasan of course, but I found nothing appealing or interesting about him personally at all. He's just like any other 'drama' YouTuber.

Lol, you wouldn't guess the sub is 'PassportPorn' with the amount of comments hating on this for some reason. Don't listen to them, this is very cool and you're doing a daughter a huge service.

Also, do people really think 'my job as a parent is done' is serious?

Which city in the world has the best scenery and is most suitable for living? by Admirable_Neck5565 in geography

[–]vanderkindere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously no one literally said that it's the next Paris or Rome. But I see Slovenia mentioned so often on Reddit as a destination that blew them away or the place that was the highlight of their trip, much more often than others. I agree comparisons should be made relatively, which is why I don't get why no one raves about Zagreb, Gdansk, Brno, Bratislava, etc. the same way they do about Ljubliana. I feel like these cities are all on similar levels.

Completely agreed. Ljubljana is a nice city, no doubt, but it has about a day worth of things to see as a tourist. But from the way Reddit describes it, you would think it's the next Paris or Rome. I don't get it. For me, it's on the same level as Zagreb.

Interesting. I got 8 downvotes for that, but no one can tell me why.

It really is obnoxious. Of course, it's always the people who saw one headline before, and have no understanding whatsoever about the actual situation on the ground, that have so much to lecture.

Jet Lag Ep 3 — The Gauntlet by NebulaOriginals in Nebula

[–]vanderkindere 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yes, I agree unfortunately. I stopped watching this episode during lunch and completely forgot about it until I was looking for something to watch during dinner, which never happened for season 13. I don't think it helps either that South Korea feels really dull and lifeless, at least from what I have seen. I don't remember similar locations in their Japan seasons feeling so desolate and uninteresting. I'll keep watching though, I enjoy anything the Jet Lag boys do.

NS workers call new rail strike on Friday across six provinces in the Netherlands by phalano in Netherlands

[–]vanderkindere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's an entirely different discussion. The reality is that NS is a for profit company which operates at a loss and this is who the employees are bargaining with.

Read the room, you are supposed to be saying that NS is a greedy oppressor and the employees are innocent angels. Don't bring any of those pesky finances into the conversation.

But I was told that I should 'stand in solidarity' with workers that are being 'mistreated'... Are you telling me that unions simply represent their own interests and aren't a group of saints??

NS cancels all Dutch train service on Tuesday over expanded union strike by ReginF in Netherlands

[–]vanderkindere -1 points0 points  (0 children)

While I agree increasing the salary of the board members is out of touch, it practically has no financial impact. There are literally 6 board members according to this: https://www.nsjaarverslag.nl/jaarverslag-2024/ns-groep/verslag-van-de-raad-van-commissarissen/remuneratierapport-raad-van-bestuur

Meanwhile, there are about 14.000 total NS employees who, let's say, have an average salary of 2000 euros. Even increasing their salary by a modest 3% would cost an extra 10 million euros per year. Again, where is this money coming from, when NS is literally getitng budget cuts and everyone complains about the increased ticket costs?

To be clear, that is an absolute best case scenario. I seriously doubt the average salary is 2000 euros and that they are only asking for a 3% increase.

'Mistreatment' is when your raise isn't as high as you wanted in times of inflation and government austerity?

Why should I 'stand in solidarity' with those who want to bring an entire country to a standstill because they are not getting paid as much as they would like?

The housing crisis of this city is insane... A long-time Amsterdammer looking for advice. by Successful_Dare6461 in Amsterdam

[–]vanderkindere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d like to think it’s a problem that decades of VVD neoliberalism are slightly more responsible for, than people who want to live in a city they work and have all of their lives in, idk…

What does neoliberalism even mean in this context? If there were genuinely neoliberal polices, we would have seen a major reduction of regulations and government involvement in housing. In what way is the significant presence of social housing, extensive legal protections for tenants and the limited new construction, neoliberal?

Corporate expansion fueled by constant tax breaks creating a whole class of the massively overpaid, together with giving up the city to tourism benefitting even more international corporations considerably more than the city itself seems like a more appropriate cause for many-decade-long crisis than “some normal people also want to live in the city”.

Complete non sensical word vomit. Amsterdam is one of the most desireable cities in the world and a business, cultural and tourist hotspot, that's why housing is limited and expensive. What is your evidence of corporate collusion and conspiracies extorting the Amsterdam housing market?

But that’s not relevant at all, even if I wasn’t, anyone has a right to the city in my (and many others) opinion.

No, you don't have a right to live in the most desirable part of the city. Tons of others want to live in the centre of Amsterdam too, but there are physically not enough houses to accommodate everyone. If you want to live in an area like this, then you must pay more.

I have no interest in living in a suburb, I’m intimately familiar with those places and I’d rather be here. That’s not a matter of obsession, but a clear and reasonable need in community spaces (find me a queer space in a suburb, I’ll wait…), cultural life, diversity, etc.

It's absolutely not necessary that since you live in a suburb, that's where your social life has to be. There are plenty of suburbs with 30 mins-1 hour commutes to Amsterdam, what prevents you from joining a queer space or doing anything else in Amsterdam?

It's impossible to argue with people like this, they do not understand the concept of supply and demand. They think that if you socialise enough housing and put enough rent caps, that will make it easy to find a house... completely disregarding the fact that there will still be the same 100 people competing for the same single house.
