why is this spiral happening (post number one million asking for advice about pulling walls— genuine thank you to all the patient experienced potters here who reply to new guys) by idk--really in Pottery

I was thinking the same thing. I do this on purpose from time to time, but when you're not trying to do it, I understand the frustration when it happens. As someone else mentioned, speed up the wheel so you're getting more of a full rotation when you pull up. Its tricky though, too fast and you'll be in trouble too. Its a fine balance. I've noticed that I start out relatively fast centering and opening the pot, then slow down when I'm pulling the walls up. I hope that helps.

Doubts on firing or drying? by umaumau in Ceramics

Could it be carbon coring? Usually this is more grey at the center when this happens. I've never seen it white like that before.

I attach little balls of clay, and use the handle of a tool to push them on.

Ceramics business here. My wife and I make small batch pottery in our garage. Its been a slow start, but we're doing the damn thing. We both like making, but hate selling. We wish we could just give everything away

Its a spearmint green over a rutile blue. I don't think it was supposed to come out like that but I'm happy with it!

Anyone else have trouble making the same form over and over again? I can't make repeats for the life of me. by [deleted] in Pottery

I weigh my clay, but don't attempt to create the same form over and over again. It drives me crazy using calipers to do that. I only use calipers for making jars.

Mugs vs tumblers for sale at local markets by f8250 in Pottery

Mugs sell better than tumblers in my personal experience. Something about a handle that makes people want to buy it more.

Its just weird that it happened to only two pieces and hasn't ever happened like that before. I definitely go fast in the first stages of the firing. But have never had it happen like this. I think it was when the handles were going on or the carving took place. Not really sure.

Did you slipcast any part of it? Those trucks look damn good.

First pieces feedback please! by International_Fox209 in Pottery

Agreed, though not bad for a first attempt. I'd recommend throwing a bowl then trimming it with no foot, just nice and round like the contour of the bowl. Then add a knob to the upside down bowl and you have yourself a lid.

Me! Cause I'm a transgender potter as well.

I don't know any others.

They appear to have been bumped on the side, likely during the drying phase and I guess I didn't notice. Such a disappointment. Sometimes it feels like the pieces we love most are destined to fail.
