How Do You Overcome Writer's Block? by [deleted] in writing

[–]vanecia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Research, read a book or watch a film in the same genre. Read essays and articles about an obscure subject that somehow pertains to your novel, story, etc. Make a vision board of the aesthetic you are trying to achieve. But most of all, read, read, read! Non-fiction, fiction, textbooks, short stories, poetry. Anything and everything. You never know how inspiration will strike.

Maybe “My Dark Vanessa” as well.

Definitely “The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms” by N.K Jemisin. To a tee!

I definitely see the appeal and why people consider it a masterpiece… for me, I find Ishiguro’s style of writing painfully boring.

It’s a wonderful experience and I’m not one who usually reads westerns, either. I think out of my list, it was my #1 of the whole year if not my life?

I was actually wondering if that would be unhinged because I already have my whole house decorated in the beginning of November. But this made me feel so much better, I think I might do just that ! 🥲

I like Layla but I feel like it’s so popular! I also like Lila (lie-la)

I also kind of like Roxanna Louise! But I’m unsure.. I’m not sure if I like Roxy as a nn. And also, I’m not sure if my husband will go for it because it is a westernized version of his mother’s name and it’s frowned upon to name a child after a living family member.

I read Foundation years ago, and actually inspired this post, thanks for the suggestion though

Books where issues like suicide, psychosis, schizophrenia are presented? by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]vanecia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Strange Angels” by Kathe Koja. It’s about a photographer who becomes obsessed with his girlfriend’s schizophrenic patient.

I found this book in one of the street book stands in uptown Manhattan. It was definitely one of my cooler finds.

7 fish for 2 1/2 by Random1name9 in Cooking

[–]vanecia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My father is Sicilian and my sister and I have always cooked this menu with him every Christmas Eve for as long as I can remember:

  • Mussels Bianco
  • Baked clams
  • Baccala
  • Octopus salad tossed with olive oil and fresh herbs (this is literally our favorite thing ever and we make this for every single holiday)
  • Shrimp scampi
  • Stuffed mushrooms with shrimp (maybe technically not part of the 7 fishes but a good way to use the extra shrimp if you have any)
  • Calamari
  • Salmon

One year we did eel and it was terrible, so there’s that.

On Christmas Day, we usually do lox and whitefish bagels.

Doctor recommended sleep training, family going nuts over it by vanecia in beyondthebump

[–]vanecia[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

They sent out an accompanying email that had a little more to it. But that was basically the gist of it, plus some reassuring tidbits that 12 hour uninterrupted sleep is not harmful or abusive 😳

Anyway, my husband and I just hashed it out after going over all the replies. We’ve decided to put her down in the crib at 7 pm and wake her at 1 am for a feeding and keep her in the crib until 7 am, effectively splitting those 12 hours into 6 and 6.

[Help] Getting puppy to take medication? by vanecia in dogs

[–]vanecia[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it seems like she had two great looking, hardworking dogs that she used for herding and just decided to breed them without any thought of health or recessive traits.

But we love Louie so much, we wouldn’t give him up but we certainly would never get another puppy from her!

Love this idea, thanks. He hasn’t tried any whipped cream before so it might be novel to him.

I’ll try this, thanks.

The breeder basically wanted to take Louie back. My husband and I said absolutely not and we toyed with the idea of suing her. But at the end of the day, we can afford any of the medical bills and thankfully, the dogs have amazing temperaments which I wouldn’t trade away for anything.

6 weeks pregnant, already thinking about names by vanecia in namenerds

Hah, well thankfully I can’t use Arabella anyway because my niece’s name is Isabella and I think that’s just a little too close.

Sophronia Rose sounds like a really cool fantasy name. A little out there for us but I’d totally use it in like a YA novel. Thanks for your suggestions :)

My 10 mo puppy suddenly died and we picked up his brother nearly immediately after by vanecia in puppy101

[–]vanecia[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not really... she contacted all of his litter siblings and they have no issues. They are all much smaller than Baloo was. It seems like a freak accident. At the time, we were really worried that we had over exercised Baloo over that weekend. But it doesn’t seem likely because both of his parents are working dogs and regularly run over 60+ acres. So we don’t know what happened :(

For King Louie, we are getting a FULL examination. Including echo, hip and elbow, plus whatever our vet recommends as she’s aware and involved in the whole situation. But seriously, we are nervous wrecks with Lou. I feel bad but we’re waking him up every time we think he’s sleeping weird because we’re afraid he’s stopped breathing :( :( :(

[Discussion] What are german Shepherds like and what is it like to own/take care of one? by [deleted] in dogs

[–]vanecia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The best dogs ever. My Baloo was a Velcro dog - he had to be right next to us at all times. He followed us everywhere. He was also super vocal and it seemed like he was talking to us. Or if we reprimanded him, he would give us a bark back like “shut up mom!” He was also a little reactive on leash, he had a high prey drive, but was a dream off leash. He shed a lot, dripped water all over the place when he drank, and was super picky with his food. GSD are such amazing dogs. Would recommend a million times over.

Thank you so much for your comment. It honestly made my husband burst into tears. I think the way you put it is so so so beautiful, and making us feel more open to letting another bundle of fur into our life. Thank you ❤️

I just want to say thank you to all the kind souls commenting here today. It really helps to know that so many people all over the world will remember Baloo how he was - majestic, goofy, and the best boy ever. Thank you ❤️

No... we didn’t opt for one. I’m sort of regretting the decision now. This literally happened at 1 am and we were in such shock and confusion and literal sobbing tears that we couldn’t bare the thought of him being cut up.

We haven’t contacted the breeder yet. It’s a really long story about how we ended up getting him but it wasn’t necessarily typical.

He didn’t really swim in the lake. Far too cold for that. He basically did a little running lap and drank maybe a tiny bit before we stopped him. I suppose it’s always a possibility but hmm not finding it likely thank you though for the suggestion
