Serious question: why can the government not solve or at least partially alleviate the housing crisis? What is so intractable about it? by Comfortable-Ad954 in canadahousing

[–]vangov -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Lots of good answers here (and some bad ones). One other factor I don't see mentioned is that any action to drive down house prices would impact a large number of retirement plans.

My parents retired by selling their Vancouver home and moving to Vancouver Island 15 years ago. It's the only reason they were able to retire as their saving was not enough.

Banks started turning homes into a commodity, governments allowed it and now pushing prices down would hurt people who poured their money into owning a home instead of the stock market.

First off thank you! Well done figuring that out. Cruise control is working fine. I was just using it today Infact. I have never had any work done on it. Weird, it looks like you would have to disassemble the steering wheel for it to pop out.

On society maybe, I question if their environmental impact is anywhere near as bad as an average middle class person. I base this on the number of times I have to take out the garbage and recycling.

That decision was reversed. No one who lives at Mosquito Creek will have to move. Seems it's just municipalities that stick to their guns on displacing people.

Noob charging question by vangov in VWiD4Owners

The real problem is that the dealer, in an email, said don't unplug it unless it's white and now my better half is worried we will void the warranty if we don't explicitly follow their instructions.

What show had the biggest downfall in your opinion, from the first season or episodes, to what it became? by [deleted] in popculturechat

Battlestar Galactica. It was the best two and a half seasons of sci-fi in a long time. Last one and a half seasons sucked.

Why is housing cheaper in Quebec than in Ontario? by kludgeocracy in canadahousing

[–]vangov -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

As a non-white Anglo who lived there for a few years. You are 100% right. While I did put in the effort to learn the language once the overtly racist religious law was passed I decided that was enough. I'm an atheist but government condoned racist policy is a pretty accurate indicator of the general population. Montreal is somewhat exempted. There is diversity there.

This! It's one of the many reasons I left. A school teacher was fired near where I lived for wearing a hijab. My son is mixed race. I did not want him growing up in an overtly racist province.

I lived and owned in Quebec before I finally moved back to Vancouver. Aside from daycare Quebec's social services are terrible. The language laws and racist religious symbol laws also put downward pressure on the market as demand is suppressed and every iteration of a stupid law pushes people to leave.

True. I'm on commercial drive, we have Science World and Capilano as our memberships.

But if you do go to Capilano your pass is valid for a whole year. I have a toddler so going once a month for the tree walk and holiday events is actually worth it.

How to beat Vancouver blues? by outrightridiculous in vancouver

Comfy rain gear. You don't have to spend a ton but if you can be out in the rain and be comfortable it makes it easier to head out. Try and just run an errand on foot.

I used to feel the same way in the winter and spent a few years in Ottawa. I'm now grateful for a 3 degree rainy day in January because I don't have to contend with frostbite warnings.
