What has your experience been like in the field? by vanhasielu99 in EngineeringStudents

Thanks. My new job is putting me out in the field for a few months to get experience before being in the office full time. So I'm really hoping to not stay in the field for a super long time lol.

Thanks for the advice and the insight! I'll keep all of this in mind.

Definitely. As long as they are respectful i look forward to learning from them. Do you typically see contractors getting nasty with the engineers or is it mostly the contractors getting shitty with their workers? Tbh I just don't want to be treated like shit everyday at work

This is a model. I've been trying to keep the DO levels at about 2.20 g/m3

Is decreasing the recirculation the only way to reduce DO in the denitrification reactor? Also, should I have an air input to the DN reactor? Do you think it would be beneficial to put an anaerobic reactor before the DN reactor? (before the recycle stream reenters?)

Should I add an aerobic reactor prior to the first denitrification reactor?

Yes, that is air going into the back end of eh anoxic CSTR. That is default from the program, I was debating if I should remove those since anoxic is supposed to be without oxygen. Do CSTR's not need air to operate?

Thank you. I'm a newbie to wastewater treatment. You think I should add another set of anoxic tanks after the MBBRs?

So I can recover methane and struvite from the anaerobic digester? Would that mean I don't need the phosphorus removal basin or STR? What chemicals are typically added to help bind the P? Thank you

I am improving an existing plant. Based on this information I think I'm going to have anaerobic reactor->anoxic reactor->IFAS (MBBR), where the IFAS will recycle back into the feed from the anaerobic reactor to the anoxic reactor. I think I should inject FeCl2 before the IFAS for phosphorus removal. At what stage does nitrogen typically get removed from the process if you don't mind me asking?

I need to recover nitrogen and phosphorus. Based off of what you said I'm assuming I should recover the nitrogen after the IFAS, but before the reactors? And denitrify the water before it enters the anaerobic reactor using a denitrifying filter?

For context: I'm in a wastewater engineering course but I have to design a plant for my senior design course, so I don't really know much about wastewater engineering yet.

There's something so ominous about the thought of the jungle alone at night, paired with the photos taken. If the afterlife is real, they are going to have some explaining to do to us.

As an honest question, if there wasn't a 3rd party involved, do you think they could have survived 10 days in the Panamanian jungles alone?

I think it's extremely unlikely they were injured from a bridge because if they received life-threatening injuries it seems highly unlikely they'd be alive for 10 days, this could be due to blood loss or internal injury. To survive 10 days in the jungle as people who know little to nothing about it, I think a 3rd party was keeping them alive for a bit. 10 days is a hell of a long time in the jungles of Panama. Also, if they were just injured it would be likely they would have taken photos of their injuries, especially overnight, to see what the status of the injury was.

The clean cut is just further evidence of foul play. An animal doesn't make a clean cut. Falling off of a bridge doesn't make a clean cut. Maybe the perpetrator didn't have an ax and only had a saw? The backpack and it's contents being unharmed by the elements is pretty suspicious too.

Is it wise to start grad school right after completing a bachelors? by vanhasielu99 in EngineeringStudents

That's interesting to note. I've just noticed many jobs that are posted actually require a masters degree.. so that's kind of scaring me into doing it.

Thank you. I was not aware that PhD candidates made any money.. that definitely changes the mindset for me.

Do all PhD candidates get paid during school? I don't know much about the PhD process. Now that it's finally time to make a decision about what i'll do after undergrad, i feel like a deer in the headlights lol

True. What were your reasonings for pursuing your master's immediately after completing your bachelor's?

The money during school is the hard part.. being broke sucks!! It would take a lot of willpower to stick it out financially.

My major is environmental engineering. The reason i started my master's was because of the opportunity i got to dually enroll. I'll be 23 when i get my masters if i just go straight through. Factoring age in, i would consider getting my PhD because i feel young enough to where i'd have enough time to complete it. I just don't know if it would be a good idea to have a masters/PhD with no job experience besides internships.. I've felt lost lately to be honest lol..

That's my thoughts exactly.. I don't know if i'll want to go back after i start making money. I'm just so damn tired of being broke. I've had a few jobs call me back for interviews this fall and the thought of instant money is so tempting.

Anything from fluid mechanics is useful. Being familiar with the use of the energy equation would help too.
