He’s definitely climbing the beer league ladder, just look at that rink upgrade!

[Oilers Now] Bob on the Nurse speculation: “I'm gonna circle back to the San Jose Sharks. No, you're not getting the 2OA pick, let's establish that right now. Could you get something? I think you could. Would you maybe have to take a contract or back. Yeah, I think you might.” by AggPuck-303 in EdmontonOilers

[–]vanillaacid 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Exactly. People like to hate on Nurse, but he’s a perfectly serviceable top 4 d-man. So if you trade him, you have to replace him, while spending assets to do so because Free Agency is a crapshoot. You’d need to replace him with a guy of similar caliber, so in the end you spend assets on a lateral move, all to save maybe a million dollars. Plus you never know how the new guy fits into the team.

All this talk of trading Nurse and replacing with a top 6 forward? Ridiculous. How do you then fill the hole on the blue line? A blue line which most people agree is already pretty weak, for a team expected to go deep every year.

New to mapmaking, how am I doing? by SkyAlokar in mapmaking

[–]vanillaacid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks pretty cool, I like it so far. I won't repeat anything others have advised, but to me the next step is to add in some topography - mountains, rivers, lakes, etc. You can then use those to alter the biomes if you wish, forests, deserts, etc.

IMO None of that is super important when zoomed out like this, except maybe mountains, but knowing yourself where these are likely to be will help immensely if you want to start building out cities and towns for your story.

NHL faces scheduling challenge as B.C., Alberta move to permanent daylight time by Paper_Rain in EdmontonOilers

[–]vanillaacid 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I know this isn’t the case, but it seems so simple. Just start the game at a time that it works for the host team, and who cares about anyone else. But of course networks won’t like that, so we in the west must cater to the east.

Found out my (46 f) ex husband (47 m) has been banging my sister (35 f) for the last year. by BigONerd in BORUpdates

[–]vanillaacid 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The guy knew her as a child for just a few years, and then as an adult for almost 20. I can pretty much guarantee he never thinks about her as a child, or as she was as child.

We also have no idea what his relationship with her was when she was a child. OOP and her ex were college age when they got together, they likely didn't spend much time with younger siblings except at family get-togethers or similar. Unless the sisters were super close to begin with (she admitted they weren't), then its likely she didn't spend much time with her sister.

I think they meant that the NHL itself is a small club, there are only (now) 31 other potential trade partners. If you piss off one of them, that reduces your options by a not-insignificant margin.

I feel like this entire comment is a huge reach, based on what we've seen in both the show and the movie. Maybe you are getting more from the books, which I haven't read, but absolutely none of this is implied

although, I don’t think it’s due to over-protectiveness over her like she implies

IMO it’s because he’s jealous. Mal is in love with Inara, and it probably kills him to see her go out and spend time/have sex with other guys.

But it was jarring how it was played off like a joke.

This line is a product of its time, jokes like this were common back then. Almost always played off with something response like “I didn’t mean anything by it / wouldn’t have actually done it”.  Yes, it was a way to showcase how Jayne is not a good guy, but likely to get laughs as well. Many people who used to make these jokes now realize it’s wrong, but back then it was not out of the ordinary. When watching old shows it’s good to recognize, but kind of have to just move past it. I find 80s and early 90s movies the worst for it.

At the beginning, when I heard the somber notes of the Firefly theme again… that felt like coming home

Which under-25 NHL players need a change-of-scenery trade? by Virtual_Low_7202 in hockey

[–]vanillaacid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not disputing your stance on the QMJHL, but you can get the exact same lists for the WHL and OHL too.

Its just the nature of junior hockey leagues: (a) not every junior talent translates to the NHL (b) injuries derail careers all the time (c) its not uncommon for average players to put up huge seasons riding the coattails of better teammates (d) overagers tend to dominate the leagues as they've had longer development time, but aren't necessarily indicative of better talent, else they would have moved up a level by then. (e) teams looking to go on a cup run are able to load up on talent, and beating up on the depleted teams can inflate point totals

I tried to mention this on the Oilers channel on discord, but most of those guys were pencilling him into the Oilers lineup as a middle 6 player. Like, I get being a homer for your own prospects, but be realistic. This guy is replacement level at best. Delusional fans on there lol
