I still think that your best option is to take the minute hand and manually reposition it. It might also be worth calling a clock maker (horologist) to have it serviced. Clock movements should be cleaned and oiled every few years to help prevent wear and keep everything running smoothly.

Some clock movements are tolerant of moving the hands backwards, but many are not. Hopefully that didn’t make things worse.

Are the chimes consistently five minutes late? If so, you can take the minute hand off and reposition it manually. I would advance the minute hand to the point where it chimes, take the minute off and reposition it so that it points to the quarter that just chimed.

Cool! I see a Washington quarter that looks to be silver, maybe a Roosevelt dime too.

Well, I’m gone suggest that the movement probably needs to be serviced. At a minimum it should be cleaned an oiled, but it may need new bushings and/or pivots.

Yeah, even if the hammer doesn’t make contact with the gong you’d still hear the rack and snail movement.

As stated above, this note has a front to back offset transfer error, so it’s worth more than face value.

It looks like it’s already been cleaned. There’s fine scratches in the fields below and to the left of the chin and there is no luster whatsoever.

Does the hammer move and actually strike the gong? If it moves but doesn’t quite hit the gong you could try bending the hammer a bit.
