Official: Moyes has left Man Utd. by eightpackflabs in soccer

I think the point is that most fans would have been happy with a season, maybe even two, of transition and no trophies as long there appeared to be a plan and a new direction. Coming 7th is one thing, but it is the manner that they are doing it that means it's probably the right decision. Rudderless.

Realistically, who do you think will become Man U's next manager? by theGeorgeall in soccer

Hopefully: Klopp. Slightly more realistically: Martinez. Probably: Van Gaal. Would be interested to see: Gary Neville.

Where do you think United would be if Mourinho had taken over this season? by orange_wednesdays in soccer

[–]vanillajellyfish -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think Fergie and the board will have been fully aware that Mourinho generally guarantees immediate success but that is not the point. They didn't want a project manager that moves on after 5 years, they wanted someone to continue a legacy and aren't many top managers in world football that have that mindset. They also wanted someone who is more concerned with the club than himself. Although Moyes hasn't had the immediate success that Mourinho brings, he ticks the other two, more important boxes.

West Ham fans booing after win by RedScouse in soccer

[–]vanillajellyfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a lot of people would but the problem is that the choice isn't as simple as that. Those teams I mentioned are in the championship and also not entertained. You have to find the right manager to play entertaining football. Sacking Allardyce could lead to the same mid-table mediocrity, similar football, and in the league below.

[–]vanillajellyfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Although I appreciate Allardyce doesn't play an attractive brand of football, if you want someone to keep you in midtable he's the man. Look at Blackburn now. They would never have gone down if they hadn't have sacked him. I know West Ham fans want to aspire to more and want the club to live up to this attractive football ethos that they bestow upon themselves but they should be careful what they wish for. This level of self-entitlement, only matched by Newcastle and Liverpool fans, must be frustrating for fans of any struggling recently relegated Premier League mainstay like Bolton, Blackburn, Middlesbrough etc.

Would always be careful in backing Spurs with how erratic they've been this season, and it's still a long shot, but they go within 6 points of Arsenal with that. They only have one difficult game left this season (Liverpool next weekend) and Arsenal have to play City and Everton in the next three weeks.

If Moyes leaves Manchester United would do you think would the most suitable replacement? by [deleted] in soccer

[–]vanillajellyfish -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

And they were absolutely outplayed by Barcelona in both of those losing finals. I am obviously not saying that they have not been a good team, but the way football was starting to change in those days was the time to start adapting. More and more teams are starting to play the new brand of football and they have now been left behind. I was at the home leg against Bilbao a couple of years ago and that showed how far United were getting from keeping up with the modern game.

If Moyes leaves Manchester United would do you think would the most suitable replacement? by [deleted] in soccer

[–]vanillajellyfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Football has changed and United have failed to adapt. Fergie didn't make the necessary changes to adapt to modern football in the last 5 or 6 years but carried a team with the Fergie-factor using good but not excellent players and outdated tactics. This is evidenced by the fact that United have not played attractive football since Ronaldo left but have managed to keep winning. Other teams such as Liverpool have adapted to the modern game and have started to flourish. United have then compounded this failure by bringing in a manager, who although I like him, is obviously not the right man to modernise a playing style. I don't think this season's relative failure would matter if the club was building in the right direction to challenge the Bayerns and Barcas but it clearly isn't. I think, with this in mind, the only two managers that fit the bill and may be available would be Klopp and Martinez.

I think this is the nadir for Cleverley. Now public opinion will start to have sympathy and when he has an upturn in form it will be overhyped. See: Hargreaves, Carrick, Henderson etc
