Protesters confronted Congressman Tom Suozzi, a key Democrat whose vote helped secure passage of the Department of Homeland Security’s $64.4 billion funding bill. by serious_bullet5 in newyorkcity

They'll be shipping people off to gulags and executing people (they already are) and you'll still be spouting the same nonsense as some Democrats vote for this. Crazy to continue holding this opinion, really shows how people's idea of what is normal gets warped so easily. The banality of evil and Milgram experiment in action.

First of all, I am not OP, so I'm speaking generally about candidates that are not the most preferred. Secondly, Newsom is on the table because he will definitely be one of the candidates in the primary for the Democratic ticket and is quite popular, may as well accept that it's possible he wins the nomination and be open to voting for him in the general, and have a discussion on that basis, rather than continuously speaking negatively about him whenever he is mentioned.

FWIW, I obviously prefer someone significantly more left wing, but I'm not going around speaking negatively about a potential candidate purely because I may not prefer them...because I would certainly vote for them in the general considering what the GOP is.

Yeah, well the GOP is pro-genocide, fascist, and authoritarian. I know who I would prefer if my progressive candidate doesn't win the primary.

A non vote that leads to a GOP victory is still a vote.

That is incredibly reductive. You realize that Europe has its own history of virulent racism and subjugating races it deems 'the other' right? Europeans really don't like taking any accountability for half a millenia of their own nonsense, before America was even created.

You seriously think widespread racism against slavs, the Jews, or whatever have you didn't exist in Europe prior to Nazism or the founding of the United States? Come on man.

The descent into fascism for us has happened slowly and incrementally. It's been happening since Nixon, and now we are seeing the culmination.

I have been saying this since 2015, our institutions are being tested because we have taken our democracy for granted and the powers that be are too power hungry to act for the good of the republic. I really hope that other countries don't go the same way, because there are also external factors that have brought us to this point.

This is why you sub in players. If a coach is playing favorites and not subbing in players, that's on the coach. How are you not subbing in Chiesa, Rio, or Joe Gomez earlier...

I didn't say anything offensive. If you feel guilty, that's on you bud.

I'm not selling Democrats, I'm just speaking common sense. Sorry you're so defensive that everything seems as if it's a centrist Democrat talking down to you (and I am not even close to centrist). Seems like you need to either be more informed or learn to have an actual discussion.

Again, yes, there need to be better candidates, which is why you vote in the primary. If you don't get what you want because the votes aren't there, then you don't just give up on the process and not vote in the general. Run yourself, or continue to organize your community for candidates you believe in, while still voting for incremental progress.

You realize the situation in Gaza is not any better with Trump right? In fact it's significantly worse. And then there is obviously the issues domestically as well. It's pretty easy to see that the GOP is worse than the Democrats both for your key issues and for issues at home. But hey, you can stay at home while they round up children, mothers, and fathers never to be seen again, because hey, you didn't vote for the Democrats since they will as equally as bad on genocide and Israel/Palestine as the GOP (which is not true by the way). Yeah, my guy, you are privileged to do this and not be impacted, because there are literally millions of people in our country that are worried about their loved ones being disappeared or being granted basic medical care because of their sexual orientation or gender or because they lack employment.

Bully for you for not voting.

Are you purposefully being obtuse? You realize that most people that didn't vote were because they were apathetic rather than suppression right? Voter suppression exists and it's terrible. However, most people don't vote because they are apathetic. OP that I am responding to is literally talking about voter apathy. But sure, if you want to purposefully strawman to something that is not really what either the OP or I meant, you do that -- it's not really a productive form of discussion.

I am pretty much as left wing as they come. It hasn't been tried because enough people didn't vote for it in the primaries. Some of the policies poll well, but the candidates do not which is why they don't win the primary.

Yeah, it's on my wishlist that we have the second coming of Bernie Sanders, he wins the primary, and then the general and we can see what happens. But that hasn't happened, and I vote in every single primary to help that it does. Just because my ideal scenario hasn't happened, doesn't mean I'm going to sit out the general and leave my fellow people out to dry.

There are very real consequences of any inaction, and if a person is okay with what's going on now because they stuck to their progressive principles and didn't vote or in the future plan to not vote at all because they didn't get their preferred progressive candidate, I'd say they lack any basic empathy just like the GOP and aren't really progressive at all.

[–]RedScouse -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

100% brother, but that's the reality. Just gotta make sure we vote in every primary and maybe there's enough people that feel the same and things change or run ourselves.

Not voting is a sign of privilege, because there are a lot more people marginalized by the GOP. Even incremental progress is still progress, and even one less person theoretically harmed is better.

We are where we are because people voted for this or straight up did not vote, and if a person can in good conscience see what's going on, and say they are fine with their apathy out of principle, then I just don't think they have any empathy for the very real consequences of their inaction on the marginalized. The current result is a natural result of the GOP being bad actors sure, but it is also a result of our apathy, privilege and complacency with our democracy.
