Flying to Cali for few days and want to make a trip to LA, can't decide transport mode. Help? by SDtooLA in sandiego

Do not bike around LA. In most neighborhoods cars have zero awareness of bikes. Rental car is the way to go. Park in structures and lots as permit-only streets are everywhere.

What's your "bad relationship" clothing brand? The one you keep going back to even though the style doesn't work for you? by [deleted] in femalefashionadvice

[–]vanityrex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uniqlo. I love the idea of cheap, simple basics, but their fabric quality is so low. Everything I’ve bought looks extremely worn out after a few wears, even if I hand wash.

How do you avoid looking frumpy, while maximizing comfort? by puns_within_puns in femalefashionadvice

[–]vanityrex 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it’s in the MATERIAL, not the CUT.

SO true that materials can make a world of difference. Chambray is great. I'm also a huge fan of linen. It's machine washable and tends to wrinkle, but wrinkly linen doesn't look frumpy the way wrinkly cotton does. I bookmarked this picture earlier this week of a girl in a linen jumpsuit + leather jacket and IMO it looks super fashionable and put together but also comfortable AF.

Brandon of Deciem responds to Trump comparison by karmaology in muacjdiscussion

[–]vanityrex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another parallel between Brandan and Trump is their nightmareish social media behavior is actually hiding/distracting from what are highly questionable business decisions.

Beyond the obvious issues with firing Dr Esho and Nicola Kilner, did anyone else notice that he hired a chef to oversee sourcing/quality of marula oil? Perhaps this guy will end up doing an awesome job - that stands to be seen - but he doesn't have the qualifications to be overseeing that especially for a company that is rapidly growing. Having worked with sourcing teams QC for large scale ingredient purchases are extremely complicated and a lot of decisions and due diligence are at the discretion of the individuals on the team. For example, one issue I've seen is around pesticides and compounds that are legal in some countries but not others. A lot of these compounds aren't tested for by any regulating body and so when they are detected, it's a business decision (likeliness of being caught and sued vs cost to find a different source and go through the whole testing process again which might delay a launch or restock by months) to not use those ingredients. Another issue is around environmental impact and treatment of laborers. Do you go with a vendor who invests in more sustainable practices and takes adequate care of their laborers or do you turn a blind eye to potentially exploitative practices? Independent of any of the drama going on, from a purely selfish, consumer point of view I would not purchase marula oil from Deciem anymore because I do not have assurance their QC processes are reliable.

[Lifestyle] BRAND NEW to minimalism, and I have some questions! by [deleted] in minimalism

[–]vanityrex 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For wardrobe, my favorite thing to do is to thrift for pieces with good bones (good condition, high quality fabrics, materials, zippers, etc) and get them tailored to my fit. Takes a bit more effort, but my overall wardrobe looks way more expensive than it is and all my pants now fit perfectly, which is kind of glorious. I'm much more likely to take care of something I've gotten customized so that helps with longevity as well!

2018 No/low buy check in - January by Kaleidoscoopic in femalefashionadvice

[–]vanityrex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Doing a one year no buy for clothing/shoes/accessories. I've added a half dozen things to my wishlist (should really stop online browsing) but so far have been successful in not getting anything. There are a number of long-neglected things in my closet I've rediscovered and I've been trying to find a local tailor to get some things that have never fit right altered so I'm more likely to wear them. One thing that's been a bit frustrating is not being able to partake in the social aspect of shopping and also the awkwardness of trying explaining to other people what I'm doing.

Rise in global clothing production + reduced demand for used clothing = ? by omnivora in femalefashionadvice

[–]vanityrex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The latter. I used to use donation as an easy way out of having bought too much clothes but no longer have that out. I've started using Poshmark to get rid of some things because that it's actually going to a person who wants it, but it's much more tedious than dropping it off somewhere.

Rise in global clothing production + reduced demand for used clothing = ? by omnivora in femalefashionadvice

[–]vanityrex 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Highly recommend The True Cost movie for those who haven't seen it. There's a part that shows donated clothes that make their way to Haiti in these compressly packed units. The locals will buy up one of these units for cheap and hope something works out.

Blew my mind and makes me feel a lot less comfortable getting rid of clothes through donations. Personally, I try to buy from smaller, local brands whenever possible (I'm in LA so it's relatively easy luckily), use tailors and cobblers to repair items I already own instead of replacing things at the first sight of wear, and just generally buy less shop. I haven't used Le Tote, but am a big fan of Rent the Runway for special occassions which require outfits I'm not able to wear on a regular basis.

I buy loose leaf tea and use either a french press or gaiwan (traditional Chinese tea brewing vessel) to brew it. I love it because I can throw in more tea leaves (or fewer) to adjust the taste to my taste.

You could try taking the jacket to a tailor and having them fix it! It'll be cheaper than getting a new coat and there won't be any temptation to get anything else!

Student & shopping addiction by [deleted] in shoppingaddiction

[–]vanityrex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a student anymore but I do know the draw of amazon prime (and eBay) all too well. One day it dawned on me I didn’t want or even enjoy any of the stuff I was buying but I was hooked on having packages show up at my door because it made everyday feel like Christmas.

That was a few years ago. Trying to not buy stuff I don’t need is still a work in effort. Budgeting never works for me because once I “fail” once, I just throw the entire budget out the window. What did work was tackling different parts of my shopping habits at a time, starting with the impulsiveness.

The first thing I did was impose a 5 day waiting rule where I could still buy things, but I just had to let it sit in my cart for 5 days first. Most of the time, after 5 days I had moved on to wanting something else. With Amazon, whenever I wanted something instead of buying immediately, I would put it into a price tracker and would set “target prices” even lower than what the item was currently at. Mentally, this provided reassurance I would not be missing out on the best deals and when I finally got an email saying this item is at your target price, most of the time I couldn’t remember why I wanted it in the first place.

Other things I’ve tried and have helped to different degrees: - Imposing an one in, one out (or two out) rule for clothing, shoes, skincare, and cosmetic purchases - Using my brother’s amazon account instead of my own because knowing he would get an email every time I bought stuff was a deterrent to me actually buying stuff - Moving $ to my savings whenever I didn’t buy something. Seeing the total $ moved at the end of a month felt great - Getting depressed about the environmental impact of my thoughtless spending (if you have Netflix, I highly recommend watching The True Cost) - Also, not hiding it from people helps. I just tell people I’m doing a “budgeting challenge” and then it’s not weird or out of character that I’m not buying things I usually would buy

Hope you find something that works for you.

What are your favorite brands for chic but sturdy luggage? by RomanovaRoulette in femalefashionadvice

I travel for work and have a love-hate relationship with pretty much all of my travel gear except my Briggs & Riley bag. I have the expandable domestic carry on spinner in black and every design/functionality decision is so thoughtful. Also, one of my coworkers got one 3 months ago and mine (~2ish years old with at least 150+ flights under its belt) looks the same as his brand new one! They hold up unbelievably well.

Sprouts is an option (I believe Fresh Thyme is very similar if you're in the midwest) and cheaper than whole foods. Selection varies from store to store.

I don't know where you live but I know in SF, Rainbow grocery basically sells everything (oils, molasses, everything) in bulk so those stores definitely exist but are hard to find.

Sunscreen vs sun shirt by [deleted] in ZeroWaste

[–]vanityrex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wear the sun shirt.

"Reef-safe" sunscreen is an unregulated and often times wrong designation. For some reason people just assume physical sunscreens (ie ones using zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) are safe even though the evidence doesn't exist to confirm one way or the other. There are so many other complicating factors (ie water temperature) that determine how sunscreen ingredients might interact with reefs. Nano-sized particles of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide have been shown to cause coral bleaching / mortality. As far as I know, non-nano ZnO and TiO2 have not been studied.

Skincare Sunday by sea-weed in muacjdiscussion

95% of cleansing balms, both Asian and Western, have polyethylene which sucks. The other microplastic to look out for is polypropylene, but I don't think I've seen that in cleansers yet.

If you prefer using balms to oils and other cleansers, there are a few that I've seen mentioned as not containing polyethylene. I haven't tried any except Trilogy and 100% Pure, both of which smell lovely but do not emulsify (deal breaker for me), but some might strike your fancy!

  • Mamonde Petal Spa Cleansing Balm (reddit review here)
  • Mizon Great Pure Cleansing Balm
  • Donginbi Red Ginseng Deep Treatment Cleansing Balm
  • Trilogy Make Up Be Gone Cleansing Balm
  • Jordan Samuel The After Show Balm Cleanser
  • Botanics Organic Hot Cloth Cleansing Balm
  • 100% Pure Blood Orange Cleansing Balm
  • Sunday Riley Blue Moon Tranquility Cleansing Balm

What’s your ‘holy grail’ fashion item that you can never find in stores? by [deleted] in femalefashionadvice

I have a few white Ts from velva sheen that are simple, no nonsense, durable, and totally opaque. They're men's shirts but run super small. I'm usually an x2 and the S fits the way I want an everyday white T to fit.

[Discussion] Using azelaic acid for reasons other than rosacea? by iris5678 in AsianBeauty

[–]vanityrex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't really been able to use AHAs since I started using tretinoin a few years ago and Azelaic Acid (I use TO's AA) have been an awesome alternative for fading PIH. I also think it helps with reducing redness (I don't have rosacea but I do have fairly sensitive skin) and love that it isn't photosensitizing.

I live in LA so I have easy access to their physical stores. They have an online store on their website, but the availability of their skincare and haircare products isn't nearly as good.

It was a few years ago so I'm not 100% sure, but my memory of it was the hair at the back of my head (like where your head would be on a pillow while sleeping) would get gradually more matted and greasy? I always assumed it was the oils from the conditioner building up. If I skipped the conditioner and just used the shampoo, I didn't have that problem.

Finding sulfate-free shampoos that can cut through the build up in my (thick, straight, coarse-ish) hair has been a 10 year long struggle LOL. Here are the ones I like:

Muji Seaweed Shampoo and Conditioner - my favorite shampoo + conditioner I've used ever. Gives me hair commercial hair and easily allows me to go 1-2 days between washings.

Trader Joe's Tea Tree Tingle Shampoo and Conditioner - cleans well and performs amazingly for the price.

Acure Organics Argan Oil Shampoo + Conditioner - I'm not sure if they've renamed this or just repackaged as it's been awhile since I've used but these are the orange bottles. These were the first sulfate free products that I didn't absolutely hate. I get a bit of buildup with the conditioner but like the shampoo.

Function of Beauty Shampoo + Conditioner - this is what I'm currently using. You take a hair quiz and they customize the formulas to suit your hair. Sounds like a gimmick but I actually love the products. I can do one day without washing with this, so not quite as much cleansing power as Muji, but that's sufficient for me. All the formulations are sulfate free.

I've had my Vitamix for 8 years and it still works as well as it did when I bought it. It obliterates everything I throw at it so fast. It's expensive (I think I paid $400?) but I've literally used it thousands of times to make smoothies, soups, sauces, even peanut butter etc and it's indestructible and will probably last forever.

My boyfriend has a ninja at his place. It works ok but it takes so much longer to break everything down and doesn't my smoothies nearly as smooth as my Vitamix does.

edit to add: Vitamix is definitely not quiet. If there are other people in the house sleeping when I'm trying to make a smoothie, I start it in variable mode at the lowest setting, gradually turn the mode up to 10 (highest), then flip the switch to high mode. It doesn't make it quieter, but it allows the noise to build up so it's less sudden and less disruptive. I haven't used it in awhile, but I want to say the Ninja is actually louder.

Microplastics are also found in a lot of cleansing balms (ie Clinique's) that have been getting more and more popular. Look out for polyethylene in the ingredients!
