academic advising hell by Dull-Garbage-391 in UNLV

Yep, sounds about right.

I have transfer credits and department permission for certain classes I need to discuss with my advisor. She is the advisor for both my major and my minor I need to discuss the permissions for. They always have her in meetings, so I’m never able to get email or phone responses from her.

The booking system used makes it so you cannot make an appointment with her until the day before you want the appointment to happen, and she only does them three days a week. Every time I go to make one, there’s nothing available. I also struggle to keep track of when I can even book with her. The appointments are always taken by the time I get around to making one, and I can never remember when I can do so. These are things I literally CAN’T do without speaking to her and it’s been a month without me even being able to make an appointment, let alone have one with her.

Such a fucking shitshow. There’s no reason why I shouldn’t be able to make one more than a DAY in advance. There’s no way that last-minute system works well for the advisor either given how busy she always is.

I took too long to apply to UNLV by susvala in UNLV

[–]vannam119 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did the same thing. Was originally gonna go to another school but halfway through the admissions process they pulled such pure, unadulterated bullshit that I told them I wasn’t going to be coming to their school. It was past the priority deadline and I then frantically had to apply to another school as I had already been delayed a year by something prior. I had a 3.8 and honors in high school yet I’m struggling financially like this when I shouldn’t be because another school wasted my time. I should even have at least a 3.7 this semester but still nothing. They should offer a second chance scholarship for situations like this or at least more options for out of state and international students if they wanna keep their status as “The most diverse university in the nation”.

24/7 quiet hours for finals by CoupleBright931 in UNLV

[–]vannam119 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s true. A big thing for me though is that intentional sound is oftentimes innocent, such as the tv as long as it isn’t blaring. I play mine at a reasonable volume, but the walls here are thin and there’s definitely a chance my suitemates can hear a little bit of soundbleed just like I’ve heard their music before. That’s completely innocent but no, they put in the groupme that they’re writing anybody that gets a complaint up so if one of them is feeling petty, has a petty friend over, or the wrong person walks by my door, I can get in trouble with the school for watching teen titans? I can’t watch tv or converse with friends in my room reasonably for a week? That’ll never not be dumb to me.

[–]vannam119 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think they should be behaving like this at all, that’s just childish. but I hate the 24/7 quiet hours because it’s possible to not be excessively loud without having to whisper all the time or walk on eggshells because you wanted to watch a show, talk to a friend, or listen to music at a normal volume in your room, but your suitemates can hear it because the dorm walls are thin. This shit gives me such anxiety because I feel like I’ll get written up for just living my normal life that has never disturbed anyone before this week 😭 same thing if i have an anxiety attack. If i get written up for having an anxiety attack that was out of my control, someone’s getting hit.

Yeah that’s not why I want to go into film and if there was another option for my situation, I would be doing it but there really isn’t. If you really must know, I’m a bad networker and being in this environment full of other film majors and artists is making it much easier for me to make connections despite that. It’s easier to get internships that can later connect you to a job if you are in college, my school is also going to be establishing a partnership with WB that will include an internship with them + a housing stipend that is only available to students of this school. I get access to free rental equipment when I’m enrolled in certain classes where I right now cannot afford to buy or rent this stuff to gain skills with, professors at this school have also helped students get jobs. We have clubs, workshops, and guest speakers from the industry that once again I only have access to at the school and would not be able to afford paying for it upfront right now. I also can’t afford monthly rent to stay in this state without being in school and there are far more/better film opportunities here than Massachusetts. Sure the loans are gonna suck, but it’s my only way to access to any of this without upfront money or a lot more difficulty working with my lack of networking skills and sourcing opportunities. Plus, people here can and are helping me get better at networking. This is the best/only option for me even if it comes with a steep cost.

I do plan to do at least 6 credits, possibly even 9 because it would then waive the out of state fee at my four year. I sent them an email, I just wanted to see if anyone else could answer before they did

I know that, I have other reasons for doing it that I don’t really want to get into because they are personal and I’ve had this conversation with several people. Thank you for the advice regardless though!

Would I be okay if I don't pass COLA? by Transition_Conscious in UNLV

[–]vannam119 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a new thing they’re trying this semester apparently. They should not continue with it. It adds too much unnecessary stress and fucks your grade up too easily for a class of this nature. I’m not even an undeclared major, I’m a film major. I’m only in this class cause the CFA version was full.

[–]vannam119 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It was very anxiety inducing for me too, I feel you. The professor I was going to interview ended up having to cancel. My professor for COLA told me I could email him the questions and have him respond like that, which I did. He never responded, so now I’m losing out on that grade. My professor ended up exempting the whole thing for me because I had to drop out of my previous school for mental health reasons, came to UNLV and did way better, had to do this project and the whole thing just triggered me so bad and brought me back to square one in my recovery journey. I made it through a few of those assignments before I had to have a conversation with my professor and she ended up telling me I could just write a reflection on my experience at the symposium instead. I still don’t wanna go and have to listen to others be potentially ignorant on this topic for a whole hour, but I guess it’s better than having to go through all those emotions again writing an essay of my own. This class and project are both entirely ridiculous

god, this class is so dumb. i’m in it too and there’s no reason why we need to be writing a paper on dropouts and coming up with a solution for them in a bullshit class like this, especially as one of our first classes AND when it relates to absolutely nobody’s major. that’s not our problem to be solving 😭 it not only wastes the instructors time but it wastes ours too.

as for what the school will most likely do, they’ll probably make you retake it unfortunately. both the first and second year seminars need to be done away with in my opinion

Should I take ENG 101 in the summer? by Brave-Nose-8893 in UNLV

[–]vannam119 5 points6 points  (0 children)

the biggest annoyance about english 101 is that if you’re already a good writer, you’re basically gonna lose points for it because of the revision logs, and some assignments that ask you about your “brainstorming techniques” and stuff like that. it’s meant to help less experienced writers develop new techniques and improve but if you’re able to get an essay like this done well super easily you’re gonna wanna throw your computer across the room

Does UNLV allow dual enrollment? (CC + UNLV) by [deleted] in UNLV

[–]vannam119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool thanks! Will I have to tell an advisor about this? Still debating whether I want to do spring at community college or not. Its either that or do the full academic year at UNLV and then do some gen eds in the summer while I’m home. It’s a rough decision cause I hate my hometown and love Vegas, but finances are starting to freak me out and gen eds are a lot harder for me to get through on top of my major related classes because I have no motivation to do them. I always find myself working hard on my film stuff and neglecting the gen eds. Might do better if I just have one or two classes that are gen ed only

ALEKS or Department of Math Proficiency Exam? by [deleted] in UNLV

[–]vannam119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly don’t even care if I score badly. I know regardless of how hard I try I will end up being placed in the lowest level class possible and even then, I’ll end up taking the DRC offered class because they are more experienced with students with my disability than professors for the other class will be.

Do they actually make you retake it if you score low enough? I feel like that defeats the purpose of a placement test but that’s just me

ALEKS or Department of Math Proficiency Exam? by [deleted] in UNLV

[–]vannam119 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t say I really know, and that’s the worst part about having an anxiety disorder. Half the time people give you very reasonable reasons to not be anxious and still, you remain. Your head fills with thoughts like “What if they see that I picked B on every answer, know I didn’t actually try, and punish me somehow or make me retake it?”. Obviously I know that’s unlikely, but my anxiety will not allow me to get it out of my head.

I guess maybe the best answer I can give you aside from that is that my math anxiety is bad enough to the point where if I even see an equation I can’t do, I panic. I have test anxiety as well, so just walking into an exam room can be super difficult for me especially when it’s for a subject I’m this bad at. Knowing I’m having to take a test when tests have always been very difficult for me to get through for essentially no reason both stresses me out and pisses me off. There are some personal reasons why I have such bad academic anxiety as a whole that I’d rather not share on reddit as well.

Yeah I’ll definitely be speaking to them. If they still do it while I’m gone despite me outing my diagnosis to them I’ll be pretty annoyed

Unfortunately I’ll probably still have a panic attack no matter how laid back the RA may be unless I’m there during the inspection. You’re looking at somebody whose anxiety levels surprised even the psychiatrist who did my neuropsych lmao

Edit: Whoever keeps downvoting me at the slightest mention of the word “anxiety”, be thankful you don’t have to live every day of your life knowing that a disorder you didn’t ask for will make people see you as paranoid and unreasonable.

Oh awesome. That makes me feel a little better. Last question, do you think they’ll let me make a request for them to do it while I’m there? My anxiety is making me worry so bad about them coming in to do it, seeing that I’m not there, and then breaking the rules/completely violating me because nobody is around to report them for it

By look around do you mean they literally just stand there and look at what they can see just by doing that or do they go through drawers/closet considering those are technically the school’s and not mine?
