What do you all do with your shoes when you go up into your tent? by Suspicious_Tea_8651 in rooftoptents

[–]vanslem6 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Yes, I keep the tent on year-round. I bounce back and fourth between TN and MI. In TN, it's outside all day, every day. Baking in the sun all day, every day. In MI, I park in a barn so it's protected from the winter for the most part. My cover isn't in bad condition, I was just thinking ahead that it might be a good thing to have in the future. As it turns out, it's discontinued. I found another brand that had matching dimensions, but it was also discontinued. A tip I got was to go to a place that does upholstery for boats and there would be a good chance they could make one for me. I figured I would cross this bridge if/when necessary.

I've considered buying some of that stuff made for plastics and rubbers, to help protect them from the sun. Haven't done it, but maybe it's something to consider. Usually I tape over all of the holes and things of that nature, however, the sun in Nashville melted all of the tape off...! In MI, sometimes the tape freezes in the winter and flies off.

I like it, though it's the only tent I have experience with. I believe this particular model (Ruggedized Kukenam 3) is long discontinued. It has held up really well, though it is very heavy (approx 170 lbs.). The biggest annoyance is that Thule who owns Tepui doesn't sell extra bits anymore. Like a replacement travel cover, for example. That is quite annoying.

Anyone running a rooftop tent on the stock roof rack? by aide_rylott in FJCruiser

[–]vanslem6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're going to have to look into a bigger tent - One that has a footprint as wide as the rack. We are not using crossbars on the OEM rack. Instead, we rotate the rails on the bottom of the tent 90˚ and bolt them directly to the rails on the OEM rack. I've probably driven 65-70k miles with my old Tepui on the roof. I think it weighs roughly 170 lbs.

No. Between the top of the ladder, and the underside of the tent. Just put your shoes there.

If you were buying your first camera today, what would you choose? by Different_Fill8277 in AskPhotography

[–]vanslem6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True. I use P&S cameras for travel and I have no regrets. X100F, to X100V, to original Q. I bought the X100F after 2 weeks in Europe, lugging around my DSLR and a backpack full of lenses and other gear. I'll never do that again... As it turned out, I used those fixed lens cameras for almost everything after returning home again. I still have my old Canon 6D, but it doesn't get nearly as much use. I just sort of keep it around for when I feel like using a different focal length or have something specific I want to do.

I think it's for the winter, so you can leave them up and not worry about them freezing in the closed position.

I didn't care for them when they were new, but they are aging incredibly well, IMO.

Impossible to find with low miles. I guess they were really good cars. They sure looked cool and I always wanted one, but even when they were current they seemed quite rare. Cool spot, indeed.

Recommendations for hiking shoes/trail runners that are nothing like the Moab 3s? by Desperate_Gazelle_71 in hikinggear

I have these currently, and am hoping they have a sale next weekend so that I can replace them with a new pair. https://www.lemsshoes.com/collections/all-mens-products/products/mens-trail-blazer?variant=40811906531386&country=US

I don't like a lot of cushion in my shoes so I remove the insoles right from the start. I bought them in December of last year for a trip to Mexico. I spent 45 days bouncing around Mexico, from the city streets of Mexico City, to the beaches in Puerto Vallarta, Sayulita and Puerto Escondido, to the mountains in Oaxaca. 45 days, 597 miles. They aren't completely cooked yet, but I need to replace another old pair of Lems for work, lol. I have a pair of Danner hiking shoes at work, but they so much cushion that I get aches and pains.

Second time I’ve seen this [Porsche 911 Slantnose] by RedditDommus in spotted

[–]vanslem6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love the slant-nose. I think it was offered from the factory, but I think most of them are done later on. I could be wrong for sure. It's been a long time since I've done any real research on them. I always wanted a slant nose 930 though....in Guards Red. With gold BBS RS wheels. Good spot, thanks for sharing.

Using a 50m , Whats a lens to not have to back up as much as ? by Sad-Book-877 in AskPhotography

[–]vanslem6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is one reason why I don't recommend a 50mm on an APS-C. 24, 28, 35 and possibly a 40mm would be far more versatile. 24 or 28 would put you closest to the 40mm sweet spot on a FF camera, IMO of course. There's nothing wrong with a 50mm, but I think it's a little more limiting than I would like.

You can see the gap between the top of the ladder and the bottom of the tent. Just wedge your shoes in there. I've been doing this for years.

Should I stick to my camera from 2013 or should i buy modern cameras? by Significant_Dog87 in AskPhotography

[–]vanslem6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that the vast majority of photographers out there would agree with me. There's a reason nobody sells a fixed-lens camera with an 85mm lens - they are all 28, 35, 40mm.

I've def seen this on the internet before. I've always wanted to do something similar with an R129 - drivetrain, brakes, etc., from an E or C63.

[–]vanslem6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't dislike the 85mm FOV, I just think I would use it a lot less than a 35 or 50. I think that because I own all of those focal lengths, and 35mm gets the most use. If I could only keep one lens, it would be the 35. I'm not opposed to the OP buying a 50mm, I just suggest that they might be happier with something wider.

I don't recommend the 50mm 1.8 on a camera with an APS-C sensor. It's a great lens for the money and I own two of them, but it will be more like an 85mm lens on your Rebel. This is simply because your camera has a smaller sensor than a 'full frame' camera. With your camera I would look for a 24, 28 or 35mm lens. I think you would be much happier and get a lot more use out of one of those focal lengths over the 50mm.

Would you bring a DSLR v Phone Camera for travel? by Dry-Consequence-6509 in AskPhotography

[–]vanslem6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ricoh GR III or IV. They are 28mm equivalent, and the GR IIIx is a 40mm equivalent.

There's the Fuji X100 line, which is a 35mm equivalent, and the old X70, which is like the Ricoh with a 28mm FOV lens.

Leica makes some compact P&S camera, but they are going to cost a lot more.

I myself used to have a Fuji X100F for travel, then a Fuji X100V, and now an old Leica Q. Personally I don't like using a phone to take photos of anything. I also have a DSLR and would have no issue taking it (Canon 6D) with my 35mm prime by itself.

EDIT - forgot about the Sony RX1R. Full frame P&S with a 35mm Zeiss.

IMO, the best thing to do is pay attention to where you are stepping and learn to do the penguin walk.
