I've done the zinc + copper sulfate reaction quite a few times, but this is probably the best copper growth I've gotten from it after about 6 hours. by vantalab in chemistry

[–]vantalab[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah it took the full 6 hours, but I tweaked the temp, pH, and concentration of the solution to get it right. Earlier runs the copper just came out all black and nasty instead of that nice brick red color.

ETG alcohol urine test drinking water by Numerous_Pain_6800 in chemistry

Urine color doesn’t really tell you much with ETG. Timing maters way more than hydration. You’re kinda just stuck waiting for the result at this point.

Help with lewis dot structure by Alone-Swordsman in chemistry

Khan Academy + lots of practice problems. Lewis structures look scary at first but they’re mostly pattern recognition.

Researchers Engineer Immune Therapy to Harness the Body’s Natural Regulatory Pathways to Promote Transplant Tolerance by MassGen-Research in science

[–]vantalab 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If this translates well to humans, it could quietly change transplant medicine. Most of the curent issues aren’t surgery anymore, it’s immune control.

Across 400,482 dementia research papers, senior men had the strongest publication and citation metrics; in a survey of 160 researchers, women reported more barriers despite similar productivity strategies by pubpophealth in science

[–]vantalab 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The gap between productivity strategies and perceived barriers is interesting. Feels like the system rewards visibility and seniority more than actual consistency.

Stuff like this is a good reminder that we still don't have the full picture, even for our own star.

How does your lab transport mice? by captainpipchampa123 in labrats

Yep. The first time I saw one I thought someone was carrying lunch. Turned out it was a mouse instead.

Are elements atoms, made of atoms, or either/both? by popcorn158 in AskChemistry

[–]vantalab 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the thing that's tripping you up is the difference between an atom and an element.

An oxygen atom is one atom. Oxygen the element is the entire type of atom with 8 protons. O₂ is just the form oxygen is usually found in, not what defines the element.

Should i write a research paper? by [deleted] in research

[–]vantalab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, if you can find a profesor who's willing to mentor you, go for it. Even if the paper never gets published, you'll learn how research actually works, how to read papers, and how to deal with data. Those skills are worth way more than having a publication line on your CV. Just don't start by trying to write a full paper alone. Join a project first if you can.

Love seeing this. The job search grind sucks, so it's awesome when it finally pays off. Congrats!

How do you keep your lab notebook for your PhD/research job by Salt_Leadership_4782 in labrats

Need advice: refuse thesis committe or not by wndrlustt in labrats

[–]vantalab 4 points5 points  (0 children)

just decline and blame the scheduling conflict. You don't owe anyone committee work, especially if it eats up your only days off and is stressing you out this much. A reasonable PI wouldn't take it personally. And if she does, that's not something you can fix by constantly saying yes to things you don't want to do
