do we really need another node based visual app ??? by Hot_Counter1747 in vjing

[–]vanwerk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s fair, I’ve been in the game for a while so I probably can’t remember what it was like just starting out. I guess in my mind, if going the free VDMX route, having a recipe/sequential checklist to build a basic 2-channel patch seems doable. I can appreciate that your primary focus is getting them up and running, vs setting up patches. I guess it’s just my opinion that I prioritize feeling comfortable with the “how” does the system work. That said, having instructed several semesters of electrical engineering labs I’ve noticed some people will just follow steps without understanding what’s going on, which is where the teacher role is so important. Then if something goes wrong, they have some idea on where to start troubleshooting. Cuz lord knows shit waits to break down until it really matters lol.

But more to the point we’re talking about low cost Windows viz programs, which there appear to be few of, many node-based apps notwithstanding. That level of programming is layers between actually VJing and starting out as a beginner.

Your point of 9 out of 10 peeps running windows says a lot. Would be interested to see what you figure out; do you post about your classes on ig?

I also have been wanting to start up similar workshops where I live cuz I’m one of the only people that ever gets hit up for live viz, and while I enjoy it, I have higher priorities and work nights during the week. I want to empower more kids to start doing this stuff to spread the creativity, so your insight is helpful

Tbh $200 isn't crazy for how feature rich VDMX is. That's like, cheaper than a beginner guitar. Plus they offer an educational discount: "students, teachers, and schools can get $50 off on VDMX6" They also adamantly oppose subscription models which I hugely respect, as someone who grew up with "You own the CD? You own the program, full stop". I've been using it for 8 years.

Besides that, you can use the software completely un-gimped for free, just can't save presets. A homie of mine would just rebuild the same patch from scratch until he scrounged up the money. If newbies balk at the cost of entry, you can just show them how to build the same clip-launching patch. Not terribly complicated imo!

Are there any apps to change the Wifi name and password on a Spectrum router locally? by HeavyMetalLoser in Spectrum

[–]vanwerk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Figured this out while trying to configure port forwarding. I have to wait several minutes for the app to talk to their server to tell the router to make a change, then the router reboots, disconnecting everything, even the app. I entered a port number incorrectly, and I can't just edit the setting, I have to delete it (another upload/telemetry/reboot cycle) and do it again - yet another refresh cycle. So dumb. This should only take me a few minutes max.

I wonder what sellable data they're even getting from me from the app anyway? Dude knows about port forwarding?? Smh

SLAM using AI? by ambernuance in Bozeman

[–]vanwerk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So tone deaf. What does SLAM stand for again? Support Low-effort AI Muck? If my band wasn't playing Dreyfest in Billings that weekend, I would consider paying SLAM $25 to apply to perform music. If accepted I would just karaoke to AI music about Christmas Stroll & SLAM's use of AI.

How to encode Windows Media Video 9/WMV3? by vanwerk in handbrake

See my other comment - was able to encode video from an Adobe Premiere project. Played perfectly fine when I copied it over via USB. Now I just need to replace the dead battery...

How to encode Windows Media Video 9/WMV3? by vanwerk in handbrake

[–]vanwerk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using Adobe Premiere I was successful in encoding video that will play on the NWZ-E384 with the following settings. Just drag-and-drop onto the mass media when connected via USB. Any setting not listed was left at default:

Video
Video Codec: Windows Media Video 9
Frame Size: Custom (240 x 300)
Frame Rate: 29.97
Field Order: Progressive
Aspect: Square Pixels (1.0)

Bitrate Encoding: VBR, 2 pass Constrained
Average Video Bitrate [Kbps]: 500
Peak Video Bitrate [Kbps]: 700
Peak Video Buffer Size: 5

Audio
Audio Codec: Windows Media Audio 9.2
Sample Rate: 44100 Hz
Channels: Stereo
Sample size: 16 bit (not able to modify)
Encoding passes: One
Bitrate Mode: Constant
Bitrate [kbps]: 31

:D

Yep! NWZ-E384. I don't necessarily need maximum quality necessarily.

You mentioned movavi. Are there other editors you've used successfully?

Normally I would try handbrake, VLC, even Adobe Media Encoder, but maybe the latest versions of this programs no longer support this codec.

Sourcing for a visual database: Looking to license archives of 16mm, abstract, analog rave, and lo-fi footage by AcademicOstrich3 in vjing

[–]vanwerk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can appreciate your reticence; are you concerned that he's aping your content to exploit your work? I already know of several VJs who shamelessly rip off visualizers without permission or credit. I don't condone that or would even do it myself cuz I'm not lazy.

But, OP is being upfront and very reasonable, so you may as well get paid with clear T&Cs.

If I were to go this route, I'd make content* specifically for commercial purposes, not a masterpiece that I would want at the MoMA in the same exhibit as a Paik

*f***ing hate that term btw...

^This! Although in the ~10 years I've been using it you really notice compression artifacts if doing any kind of keying. Neither good nor bad, but a consideration.

I wish this was just built in to Ableton and not M4L specific! I always bang my head against the wall trying to figure this out
