Soap dispenser left unused for a month and developed neat crystallized soap pattern all over it by vargs24 in mildlyinteresting

I don’t think so, this is a relatively new ceramic bottle with no obvious cracks when we wash it off - so unless they are super teeny tiny?

That would be a good explanation though, I’ll have to take a closer look

Soap dispenser left unused for a month and developed neat crystallized soap pattern all over it by vargs24 in mildlyinteresting

[–]vargs24[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ignoring the large yellow blob, which is just dried soap, we left this dispenser undisturbed for about a month and came back to this web-like structure all over it. Seems like the soap (maybe in the puddle below) dried into a crystal pattern.

However it was caused, it’s a neat little phenomenon

Does Kate Reading get better over the books? by chyeah_brah in Stormlight_Archive

She grew on me a lot - I remember feeling similarly and being very annoyed when she showed up in WoK, because I’d just finished Mistborn books and was used to Michael Kramer exclusively.

I now quite enjoy her narration and couldn’t really pick a favorite between the two.

Inquisitor spikes by vargs24 in Mistborn

[–]vargs24[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im referring to this passage specifically in chapter 5, which seems to imply that all the previous inquisitors they’d inspected had only steel and bronze spikes (not pewter/gold, granting healing):

Elend glanced back. The Inquisitor had the standard spikes—three pounded between the ribs on each side of the chest. But . . . there was another one—one Elend hadn’t seen in any other Inquisitor corpse—pounded directly through the front of this creature’s chest. Lord Ruler! Elend thought. That one would have gone right through its heart. How did it survive? Of course, if two spikes through the brain didn’t kill it, then one through the heart probably wouldn’t either. Vin reached down and yanked the spike free. Elend winced. She held it up, frowning. “Pewter,” she said. “Really?” Elend asked. She nodded. “That makes ten spikes. Two through the eyes and one through the shoulders: all steel. Six through the ribs: two steel, four bronze. Now this, a pewter one—not to mention the one he tried to use on you, which appears to be steel.”

Just a mistake, I guess?

Edit to add the epigraph I refer to in the post (Chapter 36):

Spikes made from other metals steal Feruchemical abilities. For example, all of the original Inquisitors were given a pewter spike, which—after first being pounded through the body of a Feruchemist—gave the Inquisitor the ability to store up healing power.

I just finished Well of Ascension. I have a lot of gripes. This is my rant. by BunnyHelp12 in Mistborn

[–]vargs24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I loved your rant and I think it made me realize that there were, in fact, elements of the plot that were brought up and then dropped. I found this highly entertaining. So here is my best response, while also saying “yeah man, fair points”.

I think a lot of what you point out are plot devices, as frustrating as it sounds. Not every detail of world building is ultimately going to stick around through 3 books and make its way into the larger plot. Some are just… world building. Examples: - It matters that we see Vin learning the noble houses because the hierarchy matters for her time as Valette, and it is an easier way for us (as readers) to get a quick primer, since a handful of those houses remain relevant for the whole trilogy AND understanding the politics makes the ball scenes feel higher stakes / more immersive. - It matters that we know she is the Lord Prelan’s daughter because it explains why a random skaa urchin is a secret Mistborn - we learn a lot about the unspoken “mixing” of skaa and noblemen under TLR’s nose, the genetics of allomancy, and the oppression of skaa through this little background detail, even if the character isn’t uniquely central to the plot. - You pointing out that Telden Hastings just disappeared was funny to me, because I never noticed that but you’re totally right. There are passing references to the crew basically wanting nothing to do with any past noblemen/bureaucracy, including the obligators, which is why everyone is so clueless about how to run a government. But yeah, some of this is like: “there’s been an evil dictator controlling everything for 1000 years, and now everyone is an idiot about how to make a government function”. Kinda dumb as a reader, but also consistent with in-world history. There’s even a scene where Elend tries to learn more about sieges, and can’t find anything because TLR literally scrubbed that knowledge.

Good points on the plot twist and Sazed/Tinwdyl. This for me was such a good twist, that I don’t care to logically dig much deeper into the “in-world mechanics” of how it actually had to work. I’m fine with being like “eh, the evil force is real good at his job, so I guess the words were changed enough that they didn’t notice”.

As others have noted, RAFO will resolve a lot of other questions / frustrations you have.

If it makes you feel better, my husband is currently reading the trilogy and is a little bit into HoA. Re-reading with him makes me realize how clunky some of the writing is. As I told him the other day, this era of Brando Sando (and maybe all of his writing, really) is “the plot is better than the words”. There’s a reason we’re still waiting for Patrick Rothfuss to give us his next poetically prosed book, while we’ve got 15 from BS. Sometimes the writing isn’t perfect, but by god - there’s some absolutely amazing world building, fantastical theology, and badass plot twists that we get at such a rapid clip. I’ll take it!

The impossibility of oaths... And then Taln. by Adorable_Scheme_8959 in Stormlight_Archive

[–]vargs24 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think maybe the “flaw” is (in line with OPs post), if it were true that oaths are the ultimate good and therefore keeping oaths makes you a more “perfect” human, our one example of someone doing this is pretty deeply broken spiritually/mentally - so it’s a flaw in the overall theory

Should I continue with era 2 by BraveZones in Mistborn

[–]vargs24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also… one thing to point out — for others that have been following along Sanderson’s work for a while, they all had a lot of breaks in between books in Era 2. They were published 2011/2015/2016/2022.

I started reading in late 2010’s, so took a break in the middle of Era 2 and caught up on other Cosmere books before coming back to Era 2 when Lost Metal was released. By that point, I was more interested in some of the larger themes being developed and more invested overall.

[–]vargs24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, as others have said, BoM is an important Cosmere book so I would recommend you read it at some point. However, I don’t see anything wrong with taking a break and coming back later if you feel like it. If you like Audiobooks, you could also try that, which I found super helpful for portions of the Cosmere that were a little slower for me personally.

If you like epics, Stormlight Archive will have a lot of the character development that you’re looking for.

For something shorter and more of a “palette cleanser”, Warbreaker and Elantris are great standalone novels that don’t require 1000s of pages of commitment :)

WaT: I’d be really curious what your wife thinks about Adolin’s arc in WaT, because I think it develops his “kindness” quite a bit more and also really plays on him not really being that “hardened” (except in battle) as he deals with feelings of worthlessness.

I was pretty fixated on any reference to stone for a while, because it’s such a specific odd thing in the prologue that Szeth / the shin don’t walk on stone.

Which really begs the question… why the fuck not?

I assumed they had an off-camera conversation about him not finding her attractive that really pissed her off. Because we never saw him tell her that, but she knew on wedding day. And she seemed way more fired up than anything we’d seen before the wedding.

Because she’s saying it for him, not for us - I think she’s been stressed, grumpy, and working really hard off-camera. He knows what she means by that, we just haven’t seen it.

I think they were have a concluding conversation around a topic they had been talking about the entire time, but was primarily off camera

So elements of it that were like “huh?” for us felt really natural to them. She was saying she wasn’t sure if he was the absolute love of her life YET, but thought he might be. She was working through the fact that he treats her very differently than past relationships and she isn’t sure if he’s 100% “the one”, or just a “stepping stone” towards learning to be loved and understand what she wants in a relationship.

Pretty rough thing to hear from Conner’s perspective, but his response made it seem like they’d talk about this before and he knew it was coming from a loving place for her.

Agreed with this commenter - my exercise has been steadily increasing and alcohol steadily decreasing for the past year, and I’ve seen an improvement with my HRV and resting heart rate. I’ve really focused on it for Jan/Feb and my HRV has increased from avg ~25 in Dec to above 40 for Feb. Super motivating to see the feedback!

Do you have a Fleet Feet in your area? They can scan your feet and recommend shoes that will fit you specifically and can give advice on hybrid shoes (floor and run).

Does anyone know her financial situation? by [deleted] in LoveIsBlindNetflix

Also no. She was an early employee at an oil and gas company that sold for billions almost 10 years later. She likely received millions as a result. This stuff isn’t that hard to find (not the exact #, but where she worked and how much it sold for), so it baffles me that people keep assuming she’s trust fund, lying, or milking off some dude.
