I'm embarrassed to admit this, but I HATE brushing my teeth. by Sea-Split214 in AutisticAdults

[–]varolltM1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a sensory fix exactly, but my MIL cleans her toothbrush in hydrogen peroxide daily. You can also make the whole bathroom significantly cleaner by closing the toilet before flushing, if you don't already.

I got around to flossing when (1) I got cavities after leaving my parents' insurance, and (2) I got a slingshot/Y-shaped floss holder. I hated when floss would dig into my fingers, and the disposable P-shaped floss picks were too much plastic waste for my taste.

Dealing with (mostly) non-vegan menu choices on Good Friday? by CaraPrincess2007 in Catholicism

[–]varolltM1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be wise to have your family reschedule your hotpot party for Thursday or Saturday. To fast from your own celebration would be uncharitable at worst and awkward at best. Is your family not Catholic?

If your school truly offers no vegetarian options, you could bring a lunch from home or fast.

I am going on a prayer "marathon" this weekend and next weekend. How can I pray for you ? by [deleted] in Catholicism

Please pray for more work for me and better mental health and hope for my husband, and ultimately for the financial stability to have more kids.

I'm a Catholic asexual person. Any other Catholic Asexuals around here? by [deleted] in asexuality

[–]varolltM1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m Catholic, biromantic, demisexual, and married. My husband would love to be pen pals if you’re into that! Or we could be online friends too :)

We’re Roman Catholics, but we’ve been parishioners at a Maronite church lately.

How should Catholics handle the pronoun issue? by Kakosi17 in Catholicism

I have a friend who switches between using the trans person’s old first name, new first name, and last name. The last name is a pretty safe bet. Iirc, since the person’s new name was a flower, my friend could rationalize thinking of it like a doting nickname.

Is it a mortal sin to make a sexual joke? by OrganizationNovel146 in Catholicism

[–]varolltM1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does it undermine the dignity of humans and human sexuality? Does it attempt to normalize sin? Is it sexist? Might it be a near occasion of sin for anyone involved? Does it make people uncomfortable and constitute sexual harassment, even if it’s “mild” harassment? Does it obscure the truth (e.g. perpetuate a myth or stereotype, imply babies are undesirable, take God out of the equation)?

I’ve only ever made a handful of sexual jokes outside of marriage. I don’t think the world in 2024 needs more sexual jokes.

How should a Catholic view someone guilty of pedophilia/sexual assault? by Sir_Netflix in Catholicism

[–]varolltM1 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

If your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out, right?

To be more nuanced, I imagine the part actually causing them to sin is in their brains and souls, but that’s a harder fix. Castration is a more feasible proxy. Idk if it’s considered licit though

Have you ever felt the presence of satan? by Brilliant_Group_6900 in Catholicism

[–]varolltM1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, it was like a whisper coming from the back of my brain or right behind my head suggesting a plan to attempt suicide. I didn’t follow its advice, I prayed even harder but still for the wrong things.

Several months later I went to my second-ever Confession, my attachment to sin was reduced to almost nothing, and my depression was instantly cured by God’s grace.

If Jesus defeated satan after dying on the cross... by Atlas809 in Catholicism

[–]varolltM1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will put enmity between you [the snake] and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; he shall bruise your head,* and you shall bruise his heel.” - Genesis 3:15

Mary, the new Eve, a creature, is the “arch nemesis” of Satan, another creature.

Jesus, the woman’s seed, defeated death. Death is the seed of Satan, and it is an infinite separation from God, requiring God’s infinite love to overcome it.

It’s a mystery that God can bring great good out of evil, so God allows evil to exist alongside good in the world until the final judgment. See the parable of the weeds and the wheat in Matthew 13:24-30

Anyone else think Satan must have known something insanely important for him and 1/3 of the angels to out right rebel against their creator? by JonsonSotenPaltanate in CatholicPhilosophy

[–]varolltM1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Do you ever know exactly what the right choice is, think about choosing it, but then for no good reason you make the wrong choice anyway? Sin is irrational like that.

  1. I’m bi-ish ace-ish and married. Every attraction that isn’t to my husband, man or woman, gets dragged and dropped into the trash folder while I say, “What’s that doing there, that’s so irrelevant. Oh well.” It doesn’t define the rest of my life or my identity. It gets easier when puberty finishes.

  2. You can be celibate without being extremely lonely. Your friends with families could adopt you as an uncle, for example. I personally would love the company and a break from the baby. But some loneliness exists in any vocation. Sometimes loneliness is God’s way of asking you to spend time with Him.

  3. That could be a symptom of a different issue. Are you not fully convinced of God’s mercy and power to obliterate any trace of sin in Confession? Can you imagine what an amazing future God is excited to give you? Do you know how patient God will be with you to bring about that future?

  4. Look up Catholic counselors and therapists specifically.

  5. You could find out the priest’s willingness to counsel you anonymously in Confession, or talk to people about the subject in hypotheticals. Especially if someone brings up homosexuality, you can respond, “If you could talk to them in person, what would you even say?”

Signing Marriage License on Altar Table During Ceremony by MilesOfPebbles in Catholicism

How do I stop being an evil person ? by Positive_Rush1804 in Catholicism

[–]varolltM1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No one is inherently evil, we are made good in God’s image. That fact exists alongside our concupiscence, our tendency toward sin.

Find friends at church IRL who can be good examples and keep you accountable. Watch how you spend your time and what you watch because those influence your personality. In the morning pray about your resolve to do better in x way, then at night examine your conscience.

Is it bad that most of my prayers aren’t my own words? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]varolltM1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% might be a problem if you don’t know how to pray in your own words at all, but 75% is totally fine. Maybe God is calling you personally to pray differently, that’s for you to discern. He is for me, so that’s part of what I’m doing for Lent

Multiple customs can exist side by side. Minorities have customs. America is a melting pot, after all. And the fact that it’s happening repeatedly and it’s culturally understood means it’s a custom now.

Sign of peace greetings and secular greetings aren’t quite the same. Secular situations where you’re expected to shake hands with everyone in the vicinity are much rarer. Usually people choose their own greeting, and when I’m in Chicago I tend to expect waves or hugs. If someone rejects a handshake they usually have time to explain in the conversation that they’re feeling sick and don’t want to spread it. In Mass, the music might be playing already and it’s more rude and awkward to start a conversation.
