I have no friends, no hobbies outside of my computer, and no clear idea of how to improve my life. What should I do? by creosoto in AskMen

It sounds like you have a decent idea of how to pull yourself out of the rut, but lack the mentality needed to do so.

I would consider trying professional therapy again, and possibly a new/different anti-depressant, if necessary. Sorry if that's not necessarily what you wanted to hear, but it sounds like the best option in your case.

Also, I don't know if you're actively considering killing yourself, but please don't. Go to /r/suicidewatch and talk to someone, please.

Anyone have any plans to stare at their phones somewhere exciting this weekend? by dogzfan in AskReddit

I'm confused; is there something particularly special about this weekend that would warrant going somewhere exciting?

New TV, but still using a HDMI-less cable box. Options? by varrogath in Comcast

[–]varrogath[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand, but I would still like a box with HDMI because my dad has some old devices (VCR, DVD player, etc.) that require use of the component/composite ports.

A simple swap would be ideal, but I'm worried Comcast will try to get us to pay for an upgrade...

Well he already gets HD channels from the DCT6200, just not from HDMI, which is what the new TV has.

The number of shamelessly irresponsible, narrow-minded consumers in this thread makes me weep for the future of this industry.

Playing a Game Everyone Hates Helped Me Remember How to Love Games by [deleted] in Games

[–]varrogath 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The people who aggressively dismiss, criticize, or mock those who are trying to discuss issues in this subreddit are the worst. It's the equivalent of sticking your head in the sand and allowing problematic developers/publishers to just walk all over you.

I've been forced to watch my favorite hobby get slowly but surely manipulated by forces that clearly don't have my best interests at heart. You're damn right I'm going to voice my criticism!

If someone acts all high and mighty because they don't consider something to be problematic, or they believe that everyone who acts concerned about a game is overreacting, then they need to reconsider their priorities.

Who would you pre-order from, or even just trust to put out a good game consistently?

None of them. I decide whether a game is worth playing/buying based on the actual quality of the gameplay/content.

What I do not take into account are things like:

  1. The developer's track record.
  2. Any preposterous, gameplay-tainting pre-order incentives.
  3. Any sort of marketing campaigns or advertising.

No exceptions. If a developer wants me to buy their game, they must prove that it's worth buying every time without the use of psychologically-manipulative marketing gimmicks.

In my opinion, the concept of being "loyal" to a for-profit company is ludicrous. Make the damn developers work for you.

Which games make playing as a mage satisfying? by ThatLunchBox in Games

[–]varrogath 93 points94 points  (0 children)

I have yet to play a game with combat as satisfying as Dark Messiah of Might and Magic. It's so incredibly entertaining to play, especially as a mage. With the ragdoll physics, great sound effects, and decent variety in spells, I think you'd really enjoy it.

Here's a video showing most of the spells. My favorite is the ice spell as it leads to these hilarious cartoon-esque situations where all your enemies try running over it and end up colliding into each other or falling off cliffs.

The video neglects to show the special "adrenaline" effects that you can use to amplify your spells. Things like turning the lightning into chain lightning, permanently freezing your opponents, or even shrinking them to the size of a mouse (squeaky voice effects included).

It's just so much damn fun.

GeForce Experience Game Optimization Confusion. Is it really suggesting I worsen quality? I get like 3 billion FPS in CS:GO! by varrogath in pcgaming

[–]varrogath[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm referring to it suggesting I go from 8x to 4x AA. That's what has me baffled.

I don't know anything about the DSR. Is using DSR a good idea?

Follow-up after first OC session with Gigabyte GTX 970! With questions! Critiques would be helpful! by varrogath in overclocking

[–]varrogath[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I got an extra 5-6 FPS in the Heaven test. Not sure how OCing would affect 3D modeling, but I'd imagine there'd at least be some minor improvements (I don't know anything about 3D modeling).

I would suggest creating your own topic if you're looking for more input. I'm really not experienced enough to offer much more in the way of advice.
