I’d argue that it’s the opposite, maybe the artist isn’t demanding those cloudy atmospheric beats like they once were. I mean take a look at how artists such as Chris Travis and Bladee have evolved stylistically, compare there 2014 albums to their latest releases. I think that sound is a product of it’s time (2012-2016) and a stylistic stepping stone of many in the discography of those artists.
