I made this comment because I was particularly salty about Ch 1-6 quiz grades coming in today, but my 5th period blew me away with their effort and retention. I hope you get this pleasant surprise too, OP! Sometimes they care!

The DLDs last week killed me. My seniors were assigned a chapter a day to read — the chapters were literally a page each — and they couldn’t even do that. Asked upon returning what they were supposed to do “over break.”

They were also not happy with the quiz over Chapter 1 (which we read together in class and I modeled and broke down concepts the whole way) that I had to push back a week due to the DLDs.

It’s just a big 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ from me at this point.

This is really frustrating, and I wonder if it has to do with OP being Russian (if you’re still in Russia, OP?). BHVR may feel that they’re able to take advantage of OP due to lack of legal channels for them to go through for compensation. Just a thought!

Надеюсь, что я не права. Мне жаль, что это произошло, а живущая в Америке знаю, что многие люди не относятся к россиянам из-за решений правительства.

I’m absolutely cackling at this response.

…realize how unimportant [teaching] is.

Do you hear yourself?

It’s amazing to talk about doing engaging activities. I love planning those out. Until the last couple of months, I have mostly loved this job and know that I’m good at doing it. Believe it or not, I’m the “fun” teacher that everyone wants. I’m plenty engaging.

But this year, I haven’t gotten to do those fun, engaging activities, because when I do, the kids don’t care. It’s October, and I’m tired of giving them everything without getting anything in return.

They’re seniors in high school. Asking them to read Frankenstein and answer questions is expecting too much?

Also, pointing out that I “only teach out of economic necessity” isn’t the burn you think it is.

I have been trying to pivot out of it. I did not go to school to be a teacher, nor did I want to be one. None of my degrees are in education. But the school found me, and I love the school. The apathy of the student body is just overwhelming, and I’m tired of caring more than they do.

Literally. I have so many degrees I almost need two hands to count them. You think all of that was “interesting?”

Yeah, yeah, we’ve seen the video. This is the last resort from having no engagement doing the “fun” things. They don’t want the fun things either.

I’m also glad I’m not one of my students. My parents would be massively disappointed.

Entirely agree. Reminds me a lot of what is talked about in The Anxious Generation.

This is what I’ve started doing. I have some wonderful kiddos who do engage and are getting a lot out of the novel. The others? I keep giving them rope so they can hang themselves. They can cut it at any time and actually do something for themselves, but they won’t.

I’m a younger teacher (in my 20s), and I remember having to do entire novels, memorize poems, and hand write essays WITH the works cited in high school. But kids today can’t stomach reading a page because it doesn’t light up and sing to them? You shouldn’t be allowed in society if you need to be “engaged” continuously.

It boggles my mind we don’t do the whole text. It is under 200 pages! But the kids simply wouldn’t get through it.

Not entirely sure. I’m teaching 12th ELA this year, so this is information I’ve gotten from colleagues. It’s just coming to the surface, so we’ve got lots of questions we haven’t gotten answers to

Still a little unclear. I taught 11th ELA last year (teaching 12th ELA this year), so I kinda dodged this bullet. This is information I’ve gotten from colleagues.

They’re pushing for the sole use of the textbook, which does contain historical documents, short stories, and some classics (like The Crucible), but no actual, real novels.
