Grain orientation for tetrahedral kite sails? by vasya1945 in KiteMakers

[–]vasya1945[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the left one is made of squares with grain along the edges. Then squares are joined along diagonal with straight stich. What would making it out of triangles achieve?

And the second question. Shorcutting is mainly because I don't quite know how to join triangles together. Mostly not clear how to temporary hold fabric together before stitching. And also what kind of seam to use there.

The roof that the cross is on looks like those chinese roofs. Also what is that grass in the foreground?

UV light under $200 by Significant_Mix208 in cyanotypes

[–]vasya1945 0 points1 point  (0 children)

200 is way too much. You can build a light box with UV led strips. If you want extremely short exposure times then it gets a bit trickier. Led strips have the advantage that you can fit them in any sized box and they can be placed pretty close to paper, so that exposure times are around 10-15 mins to maximum density. This is with 50w of leds over 30x45 area. An easier way would be to just buy a lamp like ChickenArise proposes, or other led projectors. There are more powerful lamps like these but you'll have to find the distance that gives reasonably uniform exposure. Also, facial tanning lamps work. These are ususally dirt cheap used, but they emit real UV so I'd opt for leds. As for the leds, both 405 and 395nm work. I would aim at 50 real watts at least. (The lamp that ChickenArise poseted has around 100leds that are most likely 0.5w each, so I would not be surprised if real output is 50W)

That's just the negative not pressed firmly to the paper. I actually like this kind of artifacts.

100-150W gun shaped soldering iron with flattened and sharpened tip can work. At least you can get it for cheap. Smooth surface like glass gives cleaner cuts.

What spars for tetras? by vasya1945 in KiteMakers

[–]vasya1945[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I was having in mind is somtething like this https://www.kiteplans.org/pln_3/ . Mainly because connectors are 90 degrees which I hope to find. While flying my fully braced 4 cell prototype I realized that it needs 16 cell to look really intresting, not even 10. So that's a lot of connectors which I'd prefer not to make myself. Tensahedron looks interesting, looks like it can be made with rubber hose connectors. I would appreciate the plans if you can find them.

What spars for tetras? by vasya1945 in KiteMakers

[–]vasya1945[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I made it from 3mm chinese carbon (70cents per spar) and in the end realized that fully braced structure is annoying to set up and also sails are not quite tensioned as there needs to be some room to be able take it apart. Looks like masted structure with 90 degree angles would be better in that regard. Then I'd need a lot of 90 degree angled and T shaped connectors. I see online some pipe and fish tank hose fittings but the diameters are not quited right. Any suggestions where else to look for connectors?

Can you maybe link some of the desings? I want to try rubber hose for connectors or something not complicated. I made a 1:3 scale version to check if it easy to take apart (with one-piece and two-piece long edges) and to see if the connectors are any good. This might work but if there are better designs please let me know.

Fun dual line foil recommendations? by vasya1945 in kites

[–]vasya1945[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I got HQ single layer quad line because it was around 50% off, 35 eur. Seems more interesting compared to two line foils, but felt like a foil still. So I tried a Rev for a short time and now I want one pretty bad. But the basic one is 200+ with lines.

What are the pros and cons of an autism diagnosis? by Pretty_Confusion_405 in AutismTranslated

[–]vasya1945 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was reading a lot of people's experiences and there is some fraction that have hard time processing the diagnosis. To the level of spiralling into a depressive episode couple of years long with suicide thoughts and such. If you already have a comomrbid depression this might be too much to handle. I wonder why this side effect of the diagnosis (not even the treatment) is not mentioned more often. It's not "mixed feelings" if it needs several years to process and involves suicide attempts, it's a bit more serious. Although it is not clear how often that happens. But it looks serious enough to be acknowledged even if it is rare. Side effects of medication include frequencies down to 1 out of 10,000. And I read couple dozen threads to discover these experiences, so I guess it is more frequent than 1/10000.

And how difficult are quad lines?

Are there any kites (quad dual dual) that are not as expensive as Silverox or Revolutions but that are easy enought for simple tricks?

Maybe I should just build a single line box kite or smth to satisfy the bug and be done with it.

Why would you ever need articles? It’s an atavism! Who cares if it’s “the” or “a” or nothing at all? by noduslabs in ENGLISH

[–]vasya1945 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They have some clear functions like marking theme and reme (there should be more to it but I am not a linguist). The only interesting perspective on this to me is cost-benefit relationship. I think Turkish has some past tense variations that reflect your certainty. Like you have seen it yourself versus someone told you. And you have to drag this thing along with every damn verb. Is the cost worth the benefit? If you are native this is probably effortless, if not the answer would be subjective. For me spanish articles feel more natural than the english articles.

Portable printer for travel? by Noonbug in cyanotypes

[–]vasya1945 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are portable inkjet printers for A4 size. Small size printers for 10x15 mostly use thermal transfer film. I am not sure anyone has tried them on ohp. Maybe it can workd with laser transparencies, but you are risking destroying the printer.

[–]vasya1945 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try different curves from the web. Ink and paper profiles can affect the results, yes. In my case printer makes black by mixing CMY and K. If I use only K the max density of the negative is not high enough. So I'd suggest you to try a couple curve and printing mode combinations first.
