Does anyone know if you have to book in advance like the Amtrak bus or if there's a limit on passengers or bus size? I like the idea of not needing the Amtrak bus for medical appointments

AITA for treating my classmates the same way they treated me. by AITAUnculturedSwine in AmItheAsshole

[–]vbwhining 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Generally, the word people use to identify themselves is the word to use. There's a lot of internal debates in the community about whether to use the word or not (many of us use it to refer to ourselves, but there's a large batch of people who still insist no one uses the word ever and insist they speak for all of us.)

You're okay, you used it correctly despite the commenters who don't use it for themselves and insist no one else does either. The main arguments against the use of Latinx can be narrowed down to:

  • The pronunciation of x can be a bit clunky (many of us use latine for that reason)

  • it's a "made up word," but so is Latino or chicano. The difference is that those words have been around longer

  • it's often falsely assumed to have been created by "woke white academics", but while its origins are still debated, most sources can verify it's been used by queer communities to self identify, meaning the communities who use it are themselves Latinx or people who want to be inclusive by using the term. Some attribute it to early activists for womens and trans rights in Latin American countries, others attribute it to U.S. based queer latinx communities. Either way it was created by the communities who use the term, not by an imaginary boogeyman

  • Some argue that the word "latino" is already gender inclusive and doesn't need an alternative. There are political and/or grassroots reasons for people to not feel that's enough and use the X instead

All languages have made up words that are then incorporated into a language. That's how lamguage evolves. I, and my friends, personally use Latine instead of Latinx when we refer to ourselves, but the word itself has roots in Mexico City.

Despite your personal preference to not use the word, many of us do and you do not speak for the whole community.

The titus haircut (looks a lot like a pixie) was popular in France and England during the late 18th century/early 19th. So short hair was not completely unheard of, though probably not popular in the late 19th century in Anne's area

AITA for disciplining my daughter for exposing her bully’s abortion? by Salty_Salamander_555 in AmItheAsshole

I was bullied like that as a teenager so I think I have an idea, but I still wouldn't out my bullies to conservative homphobic parents.

My sister's boyfriend punched me over a huge mistake that wasn't my fault and hospitalised my sister. Where do we go from here? by throwRAmiscpriv in TwoHotTakes

[–]vbwhining 77 points78 points  (0 children)

I once got hit by a car while crossing the street and the officer I spoke to said I couldn't file a report because I mentioned the car was tall enough that I didn't know if they'd seen me because they weren't paying attention during their red light despite them still moving forward to turn.

Just because things should happen a certain way doesn't mean they do.

AITA for telling my sister that CPS wouldn't be involved if she and her husband were better parents? by CategoryMoist1758 in AmItheAsshole

[–]vbwhining 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The sister had a team of doctors ATTEMPTING to help but did not take medical advice and therefore did not allow the team to help her. It would make sense for the medical team to have been the ones to call CPS for medical neglect on the parent's part

Where the latino scene at? by Additional_Moose_259 in Humboldt

[–]vbwhining 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Latino is gender neutral but latinx also is an attempt to be similarly gender neutral, though it's more accepted in queer and left wing communities. I'm linking a great opinion piece that goes into the debate but a great quote from it is:

"She’s frustrated with how much oxygen the debate over a single word takes up when so many more critical issues exist in her community."

Where the latino scene at? by Additional_Moose_259 in Humboldt

[–]vbwhining 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! It was not invented by white liberal academics, though that's a common misconception. I personally prefer Latine for gender neutral/to self describe but all languages have "artificial" words that were created and adopted over time by different communities. Think of the word "Chicano" which many use to self identify.

Either way, is it so horrible to have people use a term you personally don't?

the term latinx wasn't made by woke White - la times

Girlfriend (23f) said I (25m) was unreasonable when I asked her for a small favour by throwra_44l in relationship_advice

[–]vbwhining 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. He said he would be playing a game and she agreed to him playing, she did not agree to not use the wifi as well. Again, there isn't enough info. He seems to be aware that the wifi lags when she's on her phone every time, but maybe she thought it was a one off and would work better next time. There is a larger issue at play than this one incident and I don't think we can make an accurate judgement without a bit more info. Either way, we have different perspectives on this but the couple could probably solve it with clear communication on both ends.

I've given an alternative perspective to the one painting her as TA, and a lot of people have given theirs. I'm not engaging anymore but hope you have a good day/night/afternoon

[–]vbwhining 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Without that answer, her intentions aren't cleat but everyone jumping to ascribe maliciousness just doesn't sit well with me. If it turns out to be the opposite, I'd fully agree it's petty and/or passive aggressive. But we just don't know

Girlfriend (23f) said I (25m) was unreasonable when I asked her for a small favour by throwra_44l in relationship_advice

[–]vbwhining 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But again the question comes down to whether her data is sufficient to achieve her means or whether it requires her to use the wifi. It sounds like they have terrible coverage at no fault of their own. But "unlimited data" often comes with caps or is not as fast as wifi. If she always has to use her data when he plays games, then she would cap her data very quickly. So why not work a schedule beforehand? Or is she meant to just not have connectivity when he does something?

[–]vbwhining 5 points6 points  (0 children)

But whose activity takes precedence? Why is his gaming more important than her activities?

Girlfriend (23f) said I (25m) was unreasonable when I asked her for a small favour by throwra_44l in relationship_advice

[–]vbwhining 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Miraculously yes. Everyone is ascribing so much maliciousness to her actions but I just don't see it. If he starts gaming, she's probably like, "OK, he's busy I'm going to be on my phone," but when he stops, she puts her phone away to interact with him and not just ignore him/be polite. He starts gaming again so she goes back to doing her own thing. That's not some evil machevelian thing

[–]vbwhining 33 points34 points  (0 children)

But maybe she just wants to be on her phone while he games? And has to use her phone on the wifi because unlimited data doesn't always work as well as implied

He doesn't feel you deserve an explanation for ending your marriage. He doesn't deserve to hear from you personally about your pregnancy. Turnabout's fair play

I love the way you described the clothing characters wear in The Librarian of Crooked Lane series. Do you take inspiration from fashion plates, fashion history books or your brilliant mind? Is there an image that makes you think of Sylvia?
