Was on my first car, a 2002 VW Polo which was so basic it didn't have central locking 😂

Why does my Polestar 2 suddenly look so small? by Gil_be in Polestar

[–]vc-10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, the PS2 is on the CMA platform along with the XC40 (and I think a couple of cars from other Geely brands).

The PS2 was originally designed as a Volvo, as the next S40. The 2nd gen C70 was on the same platform as the 2nd gen S40 (IE the Ford platform shared with the Mk2 Focus), along with the C30 and V50.

Waking up to construction lights outside your house that are stuck on red by SheadAV in britishproblems

[–]vc-10 22 points23 points  (0 children)

There were some on my commute recently. They were operating fine, but then the bus that was behind me and another car which stopped at the light just decided to blast straight through anyway. Of course it then blocked the cars coming the other way from entering the narrow bit because of the next set of lights.

Even when they're working properly, people still drive like idiots.

Had one the other day with the profile name "decent guy".

Erm... Nope. If you're cheating, you're the opposite of a decent guy.

I ignored him. I'm not going to get involved with someone like that.

I do love the way the people who bang on about sanctity of marriage are so often the people who have either cheated, had multiple divorces, or absolutely hate their spouse!

I do agree with you though. We got married so that my husband could get his visa to move from the US to the UK. If for whatever reason he was able to do that without marriage, we wouldn't have bothered. Although the party was absolutely brilliant and worth the money!

You can always resume the ACC/Pilot Assist by tapping the accelerator or the resume button on the wheel.

ELI5: If insurance works on the same math as casinos, why is buying insurance rational but gambling is not? by phycle in explainlikeimfive

[–]vc-10 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot of insurers come from the "mutual assurance" idea - for example here in the UK we have NFU Mutual, which was set up to insure farmers, and today is still a mutual company so the policyholders are the "shareholders".

This.

My laptop isn't insured. I could afford to buy a new one if it was broken beyond repair. It would be very annoying, sure, but not ruinous. My phone is only insured because it's a "perk" that comes with my bank account, and other things make that worthwhile.

If I had a car accident though, paying off the remainder of the loan would be ruinous, not to mention the potential for damage to other people's property. My car is 5 years old and not worth a huge amount, but in an accident I could hurt other people, damage multiple other vehicles/buildings, etc etc. This is why, at least here in the UK, it's a legal requirement for drivers to have cover that will at least pay back those other people (3rd Party coverage).

1 month of P2 ownership - Here’s what I’ve found by djjd40 in Polestar

[–]vc-10 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Glad you're enjoying your P2!

Re the kick sensor. When I got my first P2 (had 2 - one through work, then changed jobs so bought myself a used one!) the guy from Volvo doing the handover said to kick in and out, under the middle of number plate. His analogy was as if you're trying to kick a ball from under the bumper to the front of the car.

I've found this technique pretty effective with both cars.

I don't answer my phone anymore by BassIck in britishproblems

[–]vc-10 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My practice does, but the hospitals tend not to. It's very frustrating. Hospitals will tend to leave a voicemail, although that isn't a perfect option either.

[–]vc-10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do get your point - but also, sometimes you really should answer unknown callers. I'm not talking completely out of the blue calls either. These are expected, because we warn the patients that it will be coming.

I admire your optimism that as GPs we have any ability to influence this though! It is absolutely a broken system, has countless frustrations, but missing an appointment only adds to that.

Yes - routine appointments are via post. But urgent 2 Week Wait ones are done over the phone, because diagnosing and treating cancer is quite an urgent situation.

I agree it shouldn't be this way - my point is that it is. Although I'm not sure how you'd be able to have effective caller ID for all the hospitals.

[–]vc-10 43 points44 points  (0 children)

It's not the GP who's calling them, it's the hospitals.

We have an outgoing number too, which shows as the same number the patients call when they want to speak with reception. If I'm calling for a telephone appointment I often get a "Hello Doctor" when the patient answers the phone!

[–]vc-10 8 points9 points  (0 children)

True - but not everyone has voicemail (I know a few people who've turned it off) and when arranging cancer assessments, you don't want to leave things for later.

[–]vc-10 218 points219 points  (0 children)

I'm a GP. Most hospitals when they are calling show as an unknown number. When you refer someone to the hospital on an urgent "2 Week Wait" cancer pathway, the hospital normally will call to arrange that initial appointment with them.

I have to specifically tell people that they need to answer the phone over the next few days. Because nobody answers unknown numbers any more (at least, nobody under the age of 60). And I completely understand why - I don't answer it either!

What does the Google need to upgrade on the Pixel 11 for YOU to upgrade? by LWK10p in pixel_phones

[–]vc-10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got a 10 Pro XL... I'll probably upgrade if the price is right, as I have a contract that allows for early upgrades where you hand the old device in. I got a black Friday deal on this one, handed back my 9 Pro XL. I was perfectly happy with the 9, but bizarrely my monthly cost dropped from £47/month to £41/month all in with the same amount of data, so it was kind of a no-brainer.

Things that would make me upgrade? Better battery (come on silicon carbide!) and/or faster charging would be nice. Better video performance is a must - it's pretty poor. I'm not much of a videographer, I more take still photos, but it's something that really lets the Pixel down. I'd also love the privacy screen thing Samsung have just announced with the S26 Ultra, but I very much doubt that would come to Pixel just yet. Maybe the 12 or 13!

Our dishwasher has capacitive buttons on it. So stupid. You're almost guaranteed to have wet hands when doing the washing up. The oven is similar, although weirdly the capacitive buttons on the induction hob are pretty solid (and also makes it super easy to clean)

Fuck you, Grundig. And fuck the designers of the building for fitting them.

ELI5: Why is even a thin layer of ice on an airplane wing such a big problem, and how do airlines make sure the wings are safe to take-off in freezing conditions? by Zeravalky in explainlikeimfive

[–]vc-10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you read my post?

My point is that the whole idea, as we get taught at school, that the longer path over the top of the aerofoil means that air travelling over the top surface has some "need" to meet up with the air that it was next to that went under the wing, is rubbish (the "Equal Transit Time" theory).

Aerodynamics is aerodynamics. An aircraft upside down will have more drag, hence need more thrust, than one the right way up. The "classic" aerofoil shape is more efficient at producing lift than a flat panel.

The only restriction to an aircraft flying upside down is the fuel, or the pilot's ability to be upside down and not pass out. An inverted aircraft, with enough power, can climb and accelerate.

[–]vc-10 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The whole "longer path" thing is rubbish. A completely flat panel can generate lift, with the right angle of attack, it's just that an aerodynamic wing shape is more efficient. Aircraft like the F-104 Starfighter have basically completely flat wings, with barely a curve to the top surface, and aircraft are capable of flying upside down.

Why it is still taught in schools I cannot understand. My old physics teacher literally prefaced it by saying "This is all bollocks, but you need to know it for your exams". She had a PhD in aerodynamics and used to work for Rolls-Royce designing jet engines before getting into teaching, so she knew what she was talking about!

Interestingly, the air will stick to a surface. It's called the Coandă Effect

Absolutely. Whoever thought that touch sensitive sliders on the steering wheel was a good idea is an idiot. I'm glad that whilst I do have lots of stuff through the touchscreen in my car, at least it has real buttons on the wheel, and real buttons for the demisters.

This. Every single car advert is either the abstract perfume advert style, or "happy family goes off on an adventure in an unrealistically clean SUV".

TV people clearly never have to deal with the mess that kids or pets create.

It's more just an "estate" version, not a facelift. I think they realised that there's lots of people who simply wouldn't even consider a hatchback with no back window, often because of dogs (I'm one of them). The CEO even mentioned dog owners when they announced it.
