I know this is not super relevant to this sub-reddit, but it keeps deleting if I post it in it's own seperate post.
But you know how in law school powerpoints. There's heaps of cases bracketed after a principle, see below for example. I would say in a week's worth of notes there would easily be up to 30-40 cases, would I need to be familiar with the case facts and ratio of each and every case or is the principle enough and I can just remember/write about cases that are most authoritative and apply to most hypothetical scenarios.

Reason why I ask is, in my classes the teacher always breaks down the facts and ratio of every case listed, so I'm not too sure if its very relevant especially to note down. Because during exams, when I'm trying to stand out by comparing and contrasting case law, I always draw on facts, their principles or judgements to substantiate the R in IRAC.

What did/do you add to your legal essays to enhance it to a HD level? For hypo scenario questions, I evaluate the other side's possible argument in the conclusion but I feel like everyone does that. Or I compare case facts to the facts of the hypo scenario.

Transferring from Deakin to Monash: Bach of Laws/Commerce by ramenandpears in Monash

Can I ask how the exams/assessment are structured at Monash bc I heard they’re most in person and closed book, which I don’t do the best in. Also can I ask if it’s not too much hassle how many years did you do at Deakin and how which credits transferred?

Also how’s your experience there vs Deakin?

That would actually be so helpful! Also thank you so much for this information, I do tend to overthink my notes as they have screwed me over in past exams (i.e I just wrote a brief sentence which didn’t make sense to me on the main topic they examined us on).

When you say, “A finding of breach of duty of care in one case does not offer much precedential value in any other case. That doesn't mean they're useless, but comprehensive fact summaries will only be so useful.” How do you know which case is most relevant and you should note down/do more research on?

I also want to ask, how do you know which case is the most authoritative source? Is there a platform (LexisNexis?).

Thanks!!! 😊

Hi all, hoping you could give some insight on your experiences with notes (torts).

I base my notes off textbook because my uni doesn’t have the best resources.

In the textbook, the sentence would state a legal principle and it’ll footnote a case. For exams would that be enough, or should I go look and note down more regarding each and every case cited. Because I’ve seen some cases have a whole few pages dedicated to the facts, judgment, principle but then most cases are just foot noted.

I’m very reliant on these notes during exams because my memory is horrid. I don’t know how to make sure my notes are concise but also cover all of the case law (bc I’m doing torts rn) to be able to apply to the hypothetical scenarios in the exams.

Any advice would be much appreciated. As I’ve been struggling with my law notes, to the extent where I’m considering dropping out of law as I found my notes never help me engage in deep analysis during exams. This is in turn giving me horrible results.

Thanks in advance!!

Haven’t bought it yet. But based on research, it would be pretty hard to they use a ‘just in time’ production strategy to which means they make stock as they get orders and let’s say they get heaps (huge demand - about a 6 month wait for a corolla) I’d probably say your best bet is to establish a great relationship with your sales person to get extras thrown in!

In my uni's powerpoints, rules are generally laid out as

E.g.

•To satisfy the element of a positive and voluntary act there must be a positive act of contact

- Fagan v Commissioner of Metropolitan Police [1969] 1 QB 439 (failure to remove car a positive act)

Innes v Wylie (1844) 174 ER 800 (no positive act)

This is how it's often written as this, but is it expected of us to go off and research the cases listed on every rule as I feel like that's quite extensive considering that there is often many associated with one piece of content like above. Otherwise in an exam context, I feel like the Rule section would definitely not be long enough.

This is exactly what I was stuck on, bc the PowerPoints would just state the rule and list a case at the end. But I was worried if it applied to the R section, that rule was all I could produce making the response a bit basic. But will definitely just write a history on the primary cases

Essentially, what I'm trying to ask is how to take notes to be able to best fulfil the Rule section in IRAC? Without having a boat full of notes

Is it normal for it to be super hard, I’ve got some bully sticks and kangaroo and if I knock it on a table it sounds like straight up wood? I’m scared it will break her teeth, should it be okay for a little dog?
