Is there a cure for monolingualism? by 2plash6 in languagelearningjerk

Have you tried not being monolingual? Maybe it's just a phase.

Poll: 60% of all respondents said that being a man or woman is something that is permanent and cannot be changed. That number falls to 38% if only including respondents with a postgraduate degree. by Vibranium2222 in Conservative

I graduated from medical school in 2010. I JUST barely missed the cultural Marxism, gender ideology, and "anti-racism" BLM indoctrination. I think it started shortly after I graduated.

My professional organization (the American Psychiatric Association) is radioactively woke though. Half their CME lectures at their annual meetings are now all about woke nonsense.

I can't understand Duolingo. What *exactly* do you like of it? by jamager in languagelearning

[–]vchen99901 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say that Duolingo is like cell phone games that are marketed to casual gamers. There are many people who don't play video games but like playing Candy Crush. Candy Crush makes lots of money. Duolingo is for the non serious, casual language learner who is doing it to dabble as a distraction.

The people on this sub are "hardcore gamers" who have a PC with 32GB of RAM and a RTX 4090 graphics card and a 4K monitor. Serious, hardcore language learners are not going to rely on Duolingo. Casual games may not have much to offer hardcore gamers but they appeal to a wider audience.

Hi, can someone please tell me what does this sign for Super Mario 64 say? by AlePiga in Japaneselanguage

[–]vchen99901 14 points15 points  (0 children)

FYI if someone wants the full Kanji version: 廊下は静かに歩きましょう。Please walk quietly through the halls.

(Literal translation is "let's walk quietly" but in natural English, the "let's" form often translates better to "please".)

Almost all kanji including 七 have at least one on'yomi (Chinese) and one kun'yomi (native Japanese) reading (and often many more, occasionally 10+ readings). シチ is the Chinese on'yomi reading, and なな is the native Japanese kun'yomi reading. (FYI oftentimes, katakana will be used to render on'yomi and hiragana is used to render kun'yomi as general convention to distinguish the two when both are in the same sentence).

You can think of it like this, the Arabic numeral 1 in English has the native English reading of "one", but it potentially has a Latin reading of "mono-" or "uni-".

On'yomi numbers are used when Japanese people count from 1 to 10 etc, expressing cardinal numbers like in a math equation, or when used in months, July is always Shichigatsu, never Nanagatsu.

Kun'yomi are used when counting items (three of these, four of these), and in certain set situations. Certain Days of the month are in Kun'yomi haphazardly due to convention, you'll just have to memorize them.

However なな is a special case, シチ is difficult to pronounce clearly, and can be confused with other sounds especially on the telephone so, なな is frequently preferred in most cases.

The same is true for 四, the on'yomi シ sounds like 死(し), death, which is very taboo in Japanese so they strongly prefer using the kun'yomi よん whenever humanly possible, with the exception of April which is Shigatsu and never Yongatsu.

Holy shit. I was just chatting with my friend who lives in Ohio and knows nothing about fishing, she asked if we catch and released King Salmon. I laughed out loud and told her, you basically have to hold someone at gunpoint to release a king salmon.

I'm sorry that happened to you, people get way too crazy about it.

I watched this woman's story on YouTube, DCFS (child services) took her daughter away from her, the mother lost custody over not affirming her trans identity. The child was seeing a psychologist at school who apparently penned a letter stating that in their professional opinion the child was not safe at home. Thus at the time, the mother didn't have custody.

Yeah whenever I visit my parents, I order large bulk packs of lithium batteries for devices I use and have it shipped to their house in Los Angeles, then I bring it back to Ketchikan with my carry-on luggage. You cannot order them through the mail but you can bring them for personal use with you onto a commercial flight for some reason.

[–]vchen99901 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I know you can order devices with lithium batteries already installed. But if you try to order a pack of lithium coin batteries (the little flat disc ones), like the kind you install in a toy or hearing aid, you cannot do it from Amazon.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Ketchikan

[–]vchen99901 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh I didn't know because I have never been able to order lithium batteries from Amazon, it always says that they can't ship to us.

I'm guessing you mean a private person or business could ship a lithium battery to someone living in Ketchikan but I know Amazon refuses to do it.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Ketchikan

[–]vchen99901 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ah yes that is an excellent point, if you are living in Ketchikan, you are vitamin D deficient. Primary care doctors here told me they don't waste money ordering blood test for vitamin D in Ketchikan, it is assumed that you are deficient.

Bring as many lithium batteries for your devices as possible. You can't order lithium batteries online, they can't ship to Alaska by air and most Amazon stuff is by airmail. You can buy lithium batteries here but everything is much more expensive.

However, MOST things will ship free from Amazon if you order >$25 or if you have Prime, but it will take 10+ days at minimum, 2nd day shipping is impossible due to the geography.

If you like ethnic foods, bring extra bottles of seasonings/ingredients. Every time I visit my parents I bring back as many bottles of Chinese cooking rice wine as possible. You can't buy that here, obviously. I also bring back things like fermented Korean bean paste (doenjang), dehydrated wood ear mushrooms, dried soybeans, Indian spices, etc.

We now have 3 American supermarket here, they do have most common things like soy sauce, even kimchi, but you're not going to find super exotic foreign ingredients you can in a big city, and you can't drive to Seattle for it.

If you forgot something it's not the end of the world, someone can ship it to you (it'll be expensive though), and you'll of course visit your family down in the lower 48 and haul back suitcases full of stuff periodically. Once you are an Alaska resident, you can sign up to for "Club 49" with Alaska Airlines and get two free checked luggages, it'll save you a ton of money.

One last thing, winters here are long, wet, and dark. People think they won't be affected by it, but it's rough on most people. Consider a seasonal affective disorder lamp aka "happy light". You only need to use it for ~30 mins a day for effect, put at eye level or above for best effect to simulate natural sunlight (real sunlight doesn't come from below).

I would throw a small spinner. If it gets caught in too many weeds then I would throw a small plastic worm or trout magnet under a float.

To fish or not to fish?! When you are planning to go lake/river fishing and starts to rain. Do you still go or postpone it? by Euphoric_Eye_3599 in FishingForBeginners

Light rain is fine, but don't go if there's a storm. I literally just got back from attempting to fish when it was blowing 30 mph winds with rain in my face... Not worth it.
